um excuse me but i like wat David Archuleta did with think of me. David Cook did well dont get me wrong but..i think it was missing some sort of element of really being into the song. its supposed to be seductive towards a woman and i didnt get all of that from him. he did well but just something to work on
Ah, he did such a wonderful job makeing it sensual. Not quite as powerful or hauntingly lasting as Gerard Butler's, but I prefer him to Michael Crawford. Not sure why, but Michael just didn't do it for me, of course he sang it well, though.
David almost brought me to breathlessness, which is the point of the song. ALMOST. He did a very good job though.
Out of all the AI songs you did this is by far my favorite, maybe because you really put yourself out there. I love your voice so much. Your albums that you have been making aren't the true you I wish I could see more of the real you. I enjoy your voice more when you really push it to the limit. You were in my hometown last month with Gavin, Reno NV and unfortunately I was on a cruise and missed you. I hope I have another chance to see you live. Love always Kris
With a little work he could probably do this amazingly well. I just didn't like how it ended, it wasn't nearly as haunting or erotic as it should have been.
he got better later on in the song, but i could count on two hands when he went off pitch, anddd comparing him to the real phantom(s) is completely stupid, because even gerard butler was better, and THATS saying something. nothing compares to anthony warlow or crawford or hugh panaro. best ever.
@devineFADS93 I've heard Panaro, Crawford and Warlow concert recordings and they're hardly perfect. And when seen live in concert, they're even more flawed (being a NYer, I've not yet heard Warlow live). Studio recordings can't be compared to anything live, especially Idol. The studio allows multiple takes to eliminate mistakes, and sound engineers further clean the recordings, sometimes joining several versions to get the best of each. Even concert recordings are engineered. This wasn't.
@lgbtTV4 I understand what you mean, im not saying he's a bad singer and i sing for a living so i know all about singing live v.s. in a studio, and, being a NYer myself, i heard Panaro and he was excellent in my opinion. I was around in Crawfords day of 'Phantomhood' though so i can't say i know how he sounds live. All I'm saying is that Phantom is like my All-time favorite Broadway musical so i suppose i just perfer the classic performance(s) of Music of the Night.
Although his isn't the kind of voice I usually enjoy with this song, mad props for not changing the arrangement or putting his 'own spin' on it (Like Archuleta did with Think of Me, don't even get me started...). I love that he respected the original arrangement and while I wouldn't cast him in a stage production, I think he did it justice... and yes, it was certainly better than Gerry.
Second point... his interaction with Sir Andrew at the beginning is hilarious XD
Having seen the Phantom both live and seeing the movie, I thought he rocked this performance. With a big voice like he has and with a song like that, it would have been very easy for him to over-sing it, which he didn't. He kept it simple, the way it was written, and let the emotion of longing and lonliness come through. It still to this day sends chills down my spine and gives me goosebumps. Beautiful voice, beautiful song, simply amazing. 'Nuff said.
If for some reason they were to do an American Idol where all the past winners would come together and duel it out to see who was the best, 1) Lee Dewyze would not be called back and 2) David Cook would win hands down. I believe he is much better then carrie underwood
one of the VERY best performances in all of american idol history. as a huge fan of phantom of the opera (michael crawford,) i found David's performance very impressive. he's amazing.
I'm not a fan of this rendition: the transposition, the lyric change (i know it was due to time constraints, but some made no sense), and the ending was not what written. sounded too modern.
He has a good voice, but I agree with Simon, this genre/song style is not his forte.
I feel like fans of this version have only seen the movie and not experienced the live performance.
@JAyala7293 I have seen the live verison and I love this verison but I think It would be nerve racking singing one of the most awesome songs of all times but I do agree with you
was a good voice. though i have to say i really dont like the sped up or the changed lyrics. I originally only hard Gerald Butler's voice (which i love) but the other from crawford i just cant like the lyrics. Same here the lyrics just dont seem to have teh power. again though david did a great voice for the song and not have to be deep.
He interpretted this song so perfectly... starting out like a whisper. That's how it's supposed to be. Many super-talented men have sung this song on-stage, but it's the soft voices over the strong voices that capture me.
I love this movie and I've watched it so many times.... so I loved the fact that he did this song the way he did he did it his way and kinda v made it his own.
Great song, but not for his voice. He doesn't really get the style or the interpretation. He was better at the bridge. I really don't think he should've won.
I have alway liked this song from the Phantom of the Opera, and david Cook gives it that fresh...new kind of feeling to it, in the way he sang it...well done David Cook.
is it just me or does simon cowell not like musical theatre.any time any sings a song from a musical, hes negative about it.whats wrong with musicals simon?

I've been looking at these performances recently, because I didn't watch this particular season of American Idol, and I misjudged David Cook. I thought he was a Chris Daughtry clone, based on the radio singles he's released, but I think David Cook has a much clearer voice, and a more controlled voice than Chris Daughtry. It's also more dynamic, David can sing more styles of music. I'm a fan.
OMG!!!! He is amazing! That man can make anyone melt on the spot...especially in this song. I love the Phantom of the Opera....but WOW he does it so much better. Sexiest look I have ever seen!!
I actually love this version in its own right! :D I did not like his sliding between certain phrases that do not require it! Overall phenominal job! :)
@PrayersOfAngel Are you serious? David Cook is really great on this. Gerard Butler was a joke. How about the original? Michael Crawford is still the ultimate performance of this song. Though Cook did perform this song beautifully. Gerard Butler though? Come ON! He was horrific in that movie
I don't really ever like Simon Cowells comments. He really has an amazing voice and he deserved to win. I mean come on look at Jennifer Hudson, Simon needs to rething his approach for next season, and Paula needs to come back
omg! he is definatly one of the best singers ever to sing this song!! i just love the note he hits when he sayz beeee!! and nigght! lol hez just wonderful
Hearing David sing this is why I am a Phantom Phan today. THANK YOU DAVID!! :)

I'm a fan.

I really don't see why you are getting so worked up on my opinion.
After all, nobody have the same opinion.

I don't really ever like Simon Cowells comments. He really has an amazing voice and he deserved to win. I mean come on look at Jennifer Hudson, Simon needs to rething his approach for next season, and Paula needs to come back
