Have you tried to sing this while playing it? I can't even play it perfectly, but trying to sing at the same time isn't even worth the effort. In my opinion, the difficulty comes from the fact that the music is pretty syncopated while the vocals are (like you said) a straight beat for the most part. But I'm no doctor.

I think he's in drop C, which is standard tuning except the low E is tuned all the way down to C. The guitar part itself isn't too terribly difficult, but to play like that and still sing a song that rhythmically complex is mind-blowing to me.

I don't agree, I thought and still think the instrumental part was much more complex than eventually singing along to it. Because the beat is really straight forward thus singing a melody along a rather simple 4/4 pattern does not further enhance the complication of actually playing the song.

this is a great performance. And from a guitar standpoint his is a really neat song. it's not theoretically difficult but the fingering is downright painful in some parts and the sound of the melody is so nice.

If you only know the early john mayer you should check out this dvd cause it's really broad and full of some amazing playing. Out my mind, Bold as love are just sick performances. And his take on Freefalling is nice.

Yea, Frusciante is a minimalist. I think John Mayer is still making a name for himself compared to the many years Frusciante was with the chili peppers. John doesn't care if he uses al his tricks or not. He plays music for the sake of music, and that's really all that matters.
