i dont think it has to do with fighting against his beliefs with metal, rather the cleansing of the cluttered mind with all the attention and fame. just like any other artist would if they have the feeling that a break is necessary for relaxation and to establish the next phase in life...

I dont think that to him he stopped preaching the message of the songs. He believes he's been preaching the message of metal his whole life as a monk, even before he came into contact with metal. if that makes sense.
As for fighting for what he believes in, I think it came down to he had to choose between his life as a monk and his life as a member of a metal band. And he chose the former. I'm sure he still enjoys metal and listens to it.
