okay..so as much as i love music..i am baffled..i 1st heard Hoyt Axton do this song in the movie "Heart Like a Wheel" the true story of Shirley Cha-Cha Muldowney, 1st woman to drive funny cars..out of New York..Bonnie Bedelia played her part. Awesome movie..but I could never find this song anywhere. Now i have found it, & feel quite embarrassed. ugh!!! Loving Z.Z. Hill, B.B. King etc. should have known it would of been a natural blues song...lol
It's hard to believe Wolf hated the music this much and still put so much into his singing, 'cuz it's wonderful as usual. But I could sure imagine him having mixed feelings on going this way. And I've heard parts of Electric Mudd that are pretty damn good. These two guys were brilliant at adapting to new stuff. Coming up from the south, I doubt if they ever heard of an electric guitar, for one example. The electric bass hadn't been invented yet (1948, Leo Fender.) It's just hard to imagine.
this is great blues, i love the london sessions too, if you like this check out muddy waters after the rain a real gem ( and avoid electricmud at all cost )
@bok255 i think it is.. also i think their music is kinda inspired by this (and the electric mud) album. (like magic potion lot better then brothers though don't like the organ playin)
Wolf DID like his electric guitar, actually... and also...was NOT against "psychedelic" versions of his work. When Jimi Hendrix came to finally achieve his life's dream of jamming with Wolf , Wolf offered him a job. It's this album... the way the effects and Wolf's art DON'T blend... this song is not the worst, some on this album remind me of Mod Squad faux psychedelic. I played with Wolf and sometimes played blues in blues-rock form with Mike Wilhelm and John Cippolina, partly psychedelic
What a load of narrow-minded snobbery. Just because a piece of music is not a badly recorded old black guy playing an acoustic guitar does not make it bad. Mr. Wolf got it wrong too, it's a masterpiece of an album. Few artists manage to successfully cross genres and it's a testament to his genius that he recorded an entire album full of killer songs.
as someone who listens to almost everything, including blues and psycedelic rock. as a blues song it def has the emotion but its a little too much instramental (tho i love the harp twards the end), as far psycedelic music goes, its amazing. tho if anyone should be playing this song its howlin wolf
I've heard another version on Wolf's London Sessions album that's not so "electrified" which I like better--but I've always liked Howlin' Wolf. And I love this song!
As (Pete) Cosey says of that memorable session: Wolf was outraged when we were cutting. Muddy only showed a bit of doubt during his sessions but the Wolf was furious. I had all my gadgets at the session—a Jordan Bosstone distortion pedal, a couple of wah-wah pedals and an Echoplex—and, man, he didnt want to hear that at all! I have some pictures of that session and he was scowling pretty bad at me in a few. "
Anyway, I had a really long beard during those days; it was like down to the navel and Id sometimes braid it. So on one occasion during the session, Wolf walks up to me and says in that raspy voice of his, Why dont you take them wah-wahs and all that other shit and go throw it off into the lake on your way to the barbershop? I mean, he just wiped me out with one stroke, man! Covered all the territory—the long hair, the beard, the wah-wahs and the whole deal.
@johnwaynesfoot you lying mother fucker,ill smash your head in if you come around these videos any more,you mother fucker,dont you ever disrespect the wolf with your total bullshit again,ill come get you cunt so dont try me.
@qsergyuko Huh? I don't see why you think I'm disrespecting Howlin' Wolf. I just quoted an interview with Pete Cosey, probably the only musician to play with both Wolf and Miles. You can find this interview, by Bill Milkowski for JazzTimes, by doing a search on "Howlin' Wolf" and "Pete Cosey"... Were you thrown by my failure to use quotation marks after "Cosey says"? If so, sorry. Have a nice day.
@johnwaynesfoot would love to see those photos... there's a "Scowlin' Wolf"™ on my website howlingwolfphotos and am glad was not me he was scowling at that night;
hearing this again. those heavy crashing cymbals are what really hurt this cut.Wolf had a minimalist (intentional) blended style of instrumental teamwork even when it seemed not so. The psychedelic stuff would have been better in this vein in my opinion. THe beard sounds cool enough :)
I'm with Wolf - most of this album really is not right for him, it's really not his style, and I don't think it works on most of the tunes. In the Blues world, this album is sort of a farce...

Howlin' Wolf might of hated it but I think it's amazing, this whole album has such a good groove to it, like the Black Keys but over 40 years before.
