  • so is this private land or what? or are people buying an acre or so?

  • True dat to the folks posting above, with a few exceptions from a former mesa rat myself. 1. the film crew never came to 3 peaks or the greater solar world where most of the future survivors of the zombie apocalypse built their castles. These people choose to live with none of the conveniences of modern life, but do it in a place that no one could survive without a town run. Robert C. Gordon III is one of the best human beings it has been my honor and pleasure to know.

  • Fallout anyone?

  • WHERE IS THIS AT???

  • @chitown1966 Taos NM, west across the gorge bridge and over the cattle guard

  • Some of the comments I have read are making me quite sad I have many good friends that live on the mesa they are among the most honest hard working reliable humans I have ever had the good fortune to meet.

everyone helps there neighbors the food bank that you say they leach off of is ran by citizens of the mesa.

If you go to two peaks or three peaks and feel threatened by anyone you probably have it coming to you, Its all peace and love until you $&#@ up.

  • What a nice looking town. I would like to move there. I can hang out at the Barnes and Noble book store while drinking lattes and discussing recent developments in hiding dead bodies.

  • What I thought I was going to think: "Oh sweet. I wonder how others get by living off the grid"

    Actual thoughts: "Fuck that shit"

  • off the grid does not mean living like scum

  • These people are stupid

  • there true off the griders not those wishy washy hippies and not those fat thick preper cunts who moan that they are the only ones who would survive some made up zombie apocalypse

  • I would prefer to be off by myself, than to live among just riff raff.

  • You guys who are making negative comments about these guys really need to STFU and actually watch this movie. Most of these guys you are trashing are military vets dealing with PTSD and can't do it in a city. One is dying of cancer from Gulf War syndrome. Another one teaches teenage runaways ranching and basic living skills to give them another start. I was surprised by the end of the movie how much I respected these people.

  • It's a great movie, with a great massage but with the wrong title. It gives the movement a bad name for those who judge these folks without wanting to understand why are they the way they are.

  • This documentary was ridiculous. I do a lot of research about living off the grid and this particular one is going to push people away more than anything. This is not living off the grid and not the green movement. This is mostly lazy asses bumming off the system.

  • Off The Grid Living is best way to live. and Offthegridnews is the source of practical information on off the grid living and surviving today and in future times when life may not be as easy.

  • These people are fucking FREAKS. They did a pretty good job hiding the meth addiction and rampant alcoholism out there...

  • Look at those kids being brought up out there, and that girl addicted to crack. people who have nothing else in life, who hate the rest of the world end up there. And shes going to have a child...i cant believe that there are a people whos first language is English that live like that.

  • These people are NOT off grid survivalists, merely antisocial. They've made zero preparations for survival other than rusty guns and a shared post office box to receive their Fed Welfare and SSI checks. When TSHTF, and their government issued checks are cut off, they will starve to death in the desert. After they run out of ammo and coyote meat they'll be shot dead as soon as they step foot within the nearest town. This is a Zombie breeding ground. Failures in society, failures off grid.

  • @barrybrum I agree, people that intend to live-off-the-grid should be growing gardens for food. I understand why these dudes live this way, but that is scary when everyone in that community seems hostile.

  • (having trouble finding this doc) type in journeymanpictures go to this users channel

type off grid in on his channels search bar there you will find off the grid

  • These people are warriors. I did have a different image when living off the grid!

  • They brag about self-sufficiency, but they don't even have water. It's hauled in on the backs of trucks from a spring at the bottom of the Rio Grande Gorge many miles away. Aside from pot, there are very few gardens, and only a handful of people have chickens or goats. Stan is the only one with pigs. If the country fell apart tomorrow, The Mesa would be a desperate place. Their main source of self-reliance is their guns. Would you want them as neighbors?

  • @CSFLY77 yea you are just listing things that result of people living in these conditions. Its desperate, Its dirty, and its a hard life. Even getting water is hard work, as hard or even harder than having a job in the real world. SO WHY do they choose this? Sure of course from your point of view these people are crazy for chosing this life. But some might think your crazy for chosing yours. To get a job, work to make someone else rich ur entire life, N to die makin money. Thats not crazy?

  • @tigerjonn I like what you just said. Smart dude, smart lil dude!

  • @HappyHooker83 thanx happyhooker...

  • Everything on The Mesa looks and feels like "Road Warrior", except the roads are too terrible for speed. Most people are covered in layers of dirt and dust and many wear dreadlocks. I saw lots of kids who look like the Boomerang Boy in Road Warrior. The end of the world could come tomorrow and they wouldn't notice because they are already there.

  • The documentary distorts greatly the gun play and violence. Guys enjoy firing their weapons on camera. Duh. I'm guessing the filmmakers put these people up to a lot of the violence we see in the movie. Crazies aren't blasting away and setting fire to vans every night. But yes, one has to be very careful out there. Then again, that's true of many places.

  • I've visited The Mesa several times. Everyone I encountered was friendly and cooperative. But I wouldn't push it. Many are very damaged. It's more about misfits staying out of the way than any kind of alternative Hippie lifestyle. Very few signs of agriculture. Some people live in holes in the ground, most in old school buses and RVs. Swanky places have outhouses. Others don't bother. Everyone I saw is white. Only white people CHOOSE to live that way. It's not my idea of freedom.

  • @CSFLY77 spoken like a true grade A American racist...

  • whats not to understand. it fuck'n eazy if it's not yours don't touch it or ask

  • what a bunch of hobo scumbags> thats not living off the grid! this is the type of people that would be among the first to go down if something broke out. this is the last type of person i would be worried about in marshall law because they would be among the easiest to eliminate. just trash by choice is all that is

  • @martybrasher

    Are you serious?

For the record, it's MARTIAL LAW... I'd rather hang out with this "trash" than some judgemental asshole who can't even spell.

  • @martybrasher

    @barrybrum

"this is the type of people that would be among the first to go down if something broke out."

This shows your ignorance of these people. You'd be the first to underestimate them... and 2 seconds later they'd be staring you down with your own gun and leave you naked of food, fuel and shoes.

  • @itubenowplease okay, obviously 1000s of people read my comments and read it correctly. Just because ur a reading comprehension retard, dont come crying to me asshole. I didnt call them homeless moron, Read it carefully faggot. Stupidass retard cant even read correctly.

  • @itubenowplease okay time to read my comment more carefully....

  • wanna see people living off the grid...go to any reservation. try Pine Ridge, SD first.

  • @systemaddictshock You're right. I went there with a group of people from a nearby college in Nebraska and I couldn't believe it. It felt like being a very poor 3rd world country, trash everywhere, just unbelievable!! It was a real shock for me.

  • @Nina998 My grandparents lived "off the grid" fashion all their lives on the reservation. they had no electricity up until 15 years ago. Three years ago, running water was finally available to them, but they are dead by then and never saw the water improvements. Prior to all that it was dig your own ditch for the outhouse, haul your own water, dig your own coal (or buy it), haul you own wood, buy kerosene for the lamps, watch TV from an AC/DC black and white TV that ran off the car battery.

  • Where is this place located at U;m interested in living there

  • @psychoguy1017 I can think of other places to live than that place and more "off the grid".

  • I'm a little pissed off.

I can't find the 'living off the grid' video.'

    Any help?

  • @phiznak "how to?"

  • @phiznak go to bittorents

  • @phiznak its not on regular internet, dey got der own grid LOL,excellent view of life if ya do get d chance 2 c d vid

  • @TheSenior53 hahaha i see. Do you know what I'm referring to? It's like a mock how-to vid and it's damn hilarious. I give up.

  • I don't know which is worse . The yuppies that live off the grid , or the scumbags like these that live off the grid in a junkyard . They live like fukkking pigs !!!

  • 1:16

I used to live in that house, no kidding.

  • It looks like a junkyard in the middle of the dessert not a off the grid homestead.

  • GUESS WHAT SOME OF US IN NYC ENVEY YOU!

  • Yea ,if Swat would ever care about your druged ass,if you shoot your head instead

    ,weell that a better idea,man.

we don't want government ,only help from the government

they dial 11.09.2001,a plane must crashed into those fuckups

suck my dick ,to have a "sense of freeadom"

So this happend to the hippy movement,!? to bad

  • @georgel19841 gees, no wonder they blocked ya from the stopping animal abuse group

  • @husky801 Have you something interesting with my comment on this page.?????

In case you have something with my comment,...i was saing that thise people are not free thinkers

and rebels ,just victims of a guy who wanted something "interesting"to show to the world, those people talk like from a script ,fdrom a paper in the back of the camera

  • @georgel19841 that makes no sense, what are you trying to say?

  • were exactli are they on Google Earth?

  • I just watched this movie. Its basically bunch of bums live together and say how much they are free from society and its rules. But they live in welfare, beg , use the food bank services, use and fuck each other. They basically leaches of society.. Worst than trailer trash .If the producers of hills have eyes are looking for set and storyline for another movie this is the place. Horrible people.

  • @Risti2ss very true, they scare me ,i was hoping to gate insight in an alternative way of life but find that they are just loosers, they are not hippys or eco -people

  • @Risti2ss how are you going to say that when so many of them are veterans?

  • Comment removed

  • were can i see it?

    were is thise place?

  • Is this a safe place to live? I have no friends my family hates me, I would opt to go here instead of commit suicide, or join a military and get killed. Is a sort of place like this at all a viable option?

  • @DontBeAfraidToCare don't commit suicide,don't join the military,don't get killed.

that's freedom .make your own family, don't accept the life style of those loosers

    be brave

  • Saw the doc, loved it. I, however, dig the hell out of microwaves lol I could never live like this. Eventually I'd like to enjoy the fruits of western civilization, like Marlboros, dentistry with anesthetics, and, most importantly, sex with women who have running water, as to not invite the more curious smells no doubt inherent in a livelihood such as this lol

  • this doc is AWESOME,if you have'nt seen it, check it out(i watched it on netflix)so many people have no idea what it would even be like to live like these folks do,i think we'd all be a lot more fulfilled if we took a cue from them in any form.i live deep in the woods and live what i would call very simply(obviously i have some technology, which i am grateful to have and am not quite used to yet!and i share the same ideologies that these folks do it's not for everyone but it's the only way for me

  • is there any other doc's like this?

  • @dannyray753 Check out 'Brother's Keeper' or 'Grey Gardens'

  • Don't play post apocalyptic RPGs - live on the Mesa instead!

  • great movie. I go out to the desert for a month ever summer and it is an amazing experience. Living out there would be a whole different world

  • I just finished watching this and I was seriously taken by it. I think it amazing and beautiful that people are strong enough to live this way. I really have a strong a deep respect for all of these folks.

  • I own a quarter acre lot right in the middle of this place. I bought it off ebay 8 years ago sight unseen for $800. My taxes are $5 a year. I still havent seen it in person. I dont know what to do with it now. Anyone want to buy it? Own your own piece of the wild west. off grid on the Mesa. Its only 25 west of Taos.

  • @DitchFlicks

i will buy that from you if you are being genuine.

  • @waffleking100

I'll take $3K. It's lot 1, block 153, Unit 5 Carson Estates. Right in the thick of all the action seen in the movie, Off the Grid: Life on the Mesa. I have a quit deed registered in Taos County. Taxes were $5 last year and they are paid up. My wife and I would probably fit right in out there but our vision is leading us elsewhere.

  • @waffleking100 just curious.Did the land deal work out for you? I totally understand if its a private matter.I haven't had a chance to see this doc, only what's here.

  • Anybody got an update on Maine's status? I really felt for the guy, being a vet and all.

  • crazy fuckers

  • lol its ok

  • nice

  • nice

  • nice

  • Very misleading trailer.. but enjoyable to watch. There is no violence in the documentary, but this trailer making it seem like something happens.

  • filthy kooks

  • Who what when WHERE and why?

WHERE IS THIS? What is the location?

  • This was spectacular documentary. It was the best I have seen in quite a long time.

  • I just watched this on netflix watch instantly via xbox 360. it was amazing. I wish I had the balls to make such a drastic change. They live the way I wish I could.

  • this was a awesome documentary. I think people believe this docu is about people living off the grid, cause they are outsiders, or homeless or somthing like that. But its not, the docu is less about how people live off the grid, and more about WHY people choose to live that way.

  • @tigerjonn non-confrming kick usa butt

  • @tigerjonn non-conforming kicks usa butt, wish my wife didn make me conform ;-)

  • @TheSenior53 LOL!

  • @TheSenior53 gosh i hope your kidding.

  • @ShesInnParties kiddin LOL

  • @tigerjonn I saw this one and i have to agree...it was probably the best documentary I have seen so far. Yes these people choose to give up all modern everyday things and live as our ancestors did...off the land and through trading with one another.Granted it would take a person with true grit to survive out there ( i.e. all the things we are pampered by today), but in this day and age, this life looks more desirable than any other presented by the media.

  • @Tinyoak2 Agreed. However, I must say, I would try to still make it look a bit more nicer if it were me. But then again, that might lead to rules. It seems that they have all the rules they need.

  • This is one great documentary and shows just how great the American sprite can be!

These are good and honest people accepting what life has handed them and seem very happy and content about it.

  • Best jus to be away from all people to avoid conflict.

  • Saw the film last night on IFC Channel or Sundance. It

was terrific! What a great job they did bringing this to us.

It is SO American spirit. So freeing just to watch it. What

    an inspiration.

  • @karendevaki ya i jus seen it this morning, were can i watch this again? and were can i find this place haha...

  • @TSCO420 I believe it's half hour from Taos. Don't know how to watch it again but keep watching IFC or Sundance Channels cause that's where I saw it.

  • Are there any African Americans out there? One man in the movie called a woman a young "sister" and I'm assuming he wasn't religious. Just wondering. Wish I could see the rest of this movie. I'm all for freedom.

  • Sister is a hippie term.

  • Just saw it online. I was struck by how many dyed-in-the-wool patriots live there...and most of them have more profound love for their country than you'll never find anywhere else. Their outlook from their own personal military experiences formulate their existence. Incredibly beautiful movie.

  • @boliverful1 may i ask,were?i want to see it also,soo please

  • @georgel19841 If I remember correctly it was on youtube films under documentaries...hopefully it wasn't removed, it was really quite interesting. Good luck!

  • @boliverful1 were exactly?

  • where exactly is the mesa

  • outside ot taos new mexico....I lived there for awhile...they aren't kidding. In fact i may be in this film...haven't seen the whole thing yet.

  • My friend is in this movie. I was at his crazy house on the mesa the other day. I would like to watch it. Does anyone have a link?

  • link.0f.the.m0vie?

    pleaaaase?

  • @forgot2smile

    it's on snagfilms for free

  • could someone send me a link to this movie. Thank you in advance! : )

  • does anybody have a link to this movie??

  • i watched this. They're all like screw the government, and then they get food delivered to them every month from some welfare program. Doesn't make sense

  • looks like a nightmare. It's all fun and games until someone gets a stroke or has a heart attack or shoots their foot and needs grown-up medical help.

  • just watched it free online, let me know f any of you want the link to it. Great documentary of Americans living outside of the typical American system and developing their own system within their society.

  • I'd love the link to it please

  • sent it in private message.

  • could you send me the link as well? Thanks!

  • sent..check ya inbox

  • please send me the link to the off the grid movie

    THANK YOU!!!

  • I would like the link, if that's cool.. I've been trying to find the dvd to buy online but I can only find region 1, which won't work on my dvd player :(

  • check your inbox ^.^

  • Hey, can you link me to it as well?

    Thanks.

  • check inbox! :D

  • link to off the grid please? Thanks.

  • try snagfilms

  • Buy a Container Home!!

  • This doc was great do you know were i can watch the whole thing online for free? I'd love to go there these's are my kind of people !

  • It's a conspiracy maaan

  • Is this the same area as Black Mesa?

  • i hope i can make it out there within the next year to stay for a couple months.

  • stan the pig farmer - a touching and brave man. the trailer shows the more exploitative elements of the film - it definitely develops w/a lot of heart and love.

  • well noted

  • awesome

  • is this available for rent??

Is this in Northern New Mexico?

  • I love fly on the wall films like this. This is the first film to bring a tear to my eye since The Green Mile, and that was 10 years ago. You may wish to get this copyright film off of youtube.

  • This film won the Aura y Plata at last years Montana Independent Film Festival. This was truly an awesome film!!!

  • are there any movies about societies off the grid?

  • I would love to see a society off the grid where people have decent hygiene, work ethic, living conditions and intellectual standard.

  • lol, that's called a town, not living off the grid

  • I don't think you understand the concept of a town or living off the grid

  • cool Jeremy!

  • nevermind i should have read abit more before asking thx

  • where could i find this documentary?

  • This is a really great documentary and I've got to say that I'd highly consider settling there once my children grow up.

  • Where exactly are these guys located?

  • New Mexico desert

  • how to we get to this location? obviously, maps wont be very much help.

  • Google "Carson Estates" but don't expect to just show up and get a warm welcome.

  • way to go! cheers to you all on the mesa, and all of us

  • I've been to the Mesa about 5 times when I lived in the town right next to it. It was a really cool, but chilling place. Had a friend that lived there....very interesting way of life.

  • I just finished watching this film on the Sundance Channel and it was excellent. Really one of the best documentaries I've ever seen, or at least in a long long time.

There's a lot of very raw emotion in the film, some parts are funny, some are scary and a few are downright depressing.

This documentary really gives you a view of humanity and human nature that "real" movies don't and in the end I you got a glimpse at what real freedom might look like if you're willing to go that far.

  • I loved the special effects in this movie, a can of gas and a 12 gauge shotgun!

I bet the department of child protective services would love to take the kids that live there. How dare somebody live off the land!

  • There was a CPS raid a couple months ago...they took like 12 kids.

  • Hopefully they left their guns. Maybe the CPS will get what they deserve.

  • I saw this doc, and it was WONDERFUL. I wish I could meet the guy who wears the white cowboy hat -- the one with the gravel voice and the beautiful face. He has cancer and refuses chemo (same as I would!), and he is GORGEOUS, and so well spoken and sexy! They don't have 'puters on the Mesa, so he can't see that I think he is so cool. But if he saw this, maybe he would contact me, and I would go to the Mesa in a New York minute! He is like a young Clint Eastwood, only better! :-)

  • Maine is one of the best people on the mesa...I love that brother.

  • This is dready jeff and we do have puters and internet, in this case satellite.

  • They really need to work on getting water and that place would flurish. Twin station solar water pumps from rio could get the water to camp where it could be treated. On news a solar stove from Hawian inventor can be built for $21, can heat higher than other solar ovens, to 400 degrees, can purify water by boiling and is just brilliant but little info on net about construction. The people who know how to live off land now will survive in 2012 or when martial law breaks out. Fck NWO!

  • bush, if they got water and all that, then the developers would come in and make it into a mall, like they are tearing apart all the landmark bldgs here in NYC, making it look like a cross between Dallas Texas and a sickening Mid-West strip mall.

  • Indio,The state would also put in a toll road to settlement to further suck some money. Maybe the charge would be a doobie each way.

Here the latest trend is to make shopping malls with 10 ways to get into parking area and only one way to exit? Its like they want to keep you there.

  • Bushtranny, I totally, agree with you. I noticed the other day: The Sex and the City money hungry developement bullshit isn't just here in NYC. It's EVERYWHERE. I am sickened by it. Literally SICKENED by it.

  • Will be on the Sundance channel 5/20 @ 9:35pm

  • Just saw off the grid. Good movie, good people, good idea. But how dare somebody has a greenhouse that isn't open to illegal searches! Guess they din't know what to put in for an address haha. And Bush is a war crimminal and good for these ex GIs to have their eyes open to the lies. Good for the Sundance channel to run this quality info documentry when other movie chanbels are running brain dead comedies or fake action adventures for 13 year old adult minds.

  • the hills have eyes three..........only better

  • The real "Mad Max"!

  • rap, YES, that was what I thought when I watched it -- the real Mad Max!

  • Can someone tell me how to find this movie??

  • You can try the official website:

    stillpointpictures [dot] com

Not sure if a version is available or not, though.

  • Thank you.

  • Excellent work.

  • Fuckin awsome! They stole my idea! :P

  • I used to live in unit eleven, I think junkyard josh is there now-in my old trailer.

  • Hopefully this will inspire people to form their own autonomous zones throughout the country away from the interference of big government and big business. Keep your eyes open and your powder dry, folks.
