you could have put potentiometer in the series with motor coil for speed control , no need to use circuit. :P

Nice, basically, put the negative and positive at the potentiometer, it will give you a signal (in the pine of center of the potentiometer), so you can read this signal with arduino. But... How did you control the velocity of the motor?
