@juicystar07fan4ever She tested positive for a banned stimulant. It is banned by the IOC, but not in FIG competitions. The team doctor gave her a cold medicine pill that contained the stimulant. Raducan didn't know she was breaking a rule, and the banned substance has no benefit in gymnastics-- but she was stripped of her AA gold medal anyways. Her teammates Amanar and Olaru were moved up to the gold and silver, but they switched their medals back. Liu was awarded the bronze.
@juicystar07fan4ever The banned stimulant was removed from the banned list in '04, so many are calling for Raducan to be reinstated as rightful AA champ.
her artistry here counted for a lot. For me, if she could of just hit the triple twist in the second pass and had a double for her final pass it would have been the most beautiful routine of the olympics, after Khorkina of course.
isnt it a requirement to do at least one double salto..? Hhhmm.. this routine is nice but its way too easy to contend for a medal.. the reason she got fourth is coz the russians screwed up..
Some great dance here (the leap at 0:46 in particular), but what was her SV? She's throwing a 2.5 / punch front pike, a whip 2/0 and a 1.5 twist to punch tuck. That seems rather low for this COP....
@Peaceplatform sure, during the 1997-2000 COP routines that fulfilled basic requirements on bars, beam, and floor start at a 9.0. SV. The gymnast had to earn 1.0 in bonus to get the routine to a 10.0 SV. Connection bonus was the way to go. Direct connections with a D or E element would earn 0.2 in connection bonus. This is why passes like whip+double pike or whip+2.5+punch front were so popular. Gymnasts could get connection bonus easily since a 2.5 twist and double pike were D elements then.
It really sucks that this quadrennium was all about having a high vault start value if you wanted to be an all-around medal contender. Her routines just fell more like those of a champion that Olaru and Amanar.
Liu Xuan came 3rd in the all-around behind Simona Amanar and Maria Olaru of Romania (after Andreea Raducan, also of Romania, had her Gold medal taken away).
I'm not totally sure actually. Just looked up Wikipedia and it mentions something about pseudophedrine (which was banned at the time), but it also mentions something about her having higher levels of Nurofen than was allowed at the time.
I think this was a cheat. Liu Xuan should have been placed ahead of Olaru. They simply wanted a Romanian sweep. It is so insane that Raducan was allowed to compete because had it been other athlete they would have been gone.
She was stripped of the gold but was allowed to keep her team medal as well as the event medal in vault. That is so insane. Let's find out if Marian Jones can keep some of her medals. Xuan should have been rightly awarded the silver medal.
What? Raducan was drug tested after every event she competed in. The only test she failed was after the AA. Thus, it makes sense that she was stripped of her AA medal and not her team or vault ones.
That's not how it is suppose to work. Once you have tested positive you are out. Even after the all around why was she still allowed to compete in the competition. Because, it would seem like taking away a child's dream. The olympics and the politics that goes behind there decisions at time is a load of crap. Giving Hamm the gold. Patterson over Khorkina. I mean seriously, the integrity of those judging sports have been totally lost. Figure skating and gymnastics in particular.
The test results did not come in until after the women's competitions had concluded. As is the case in all sports, Raducan was penalized only for the event in which she tested positive. As for your other points, Khorkina was definitely a better gymnast than Patterson, but Patterson absolutely deserved the gold in Athens. She simply outperformed Khorkina on the night of the AA final. Paul Hamm should have had the silver in the Men's AA to begin with, so I'll leave that one alone.
She's stunning!

I think the double salto requirement came with the 2005-08 code.

Yet she scored a 9.612, I believed that she had a 9.9 or even 10 SV for this routine...
gy9402 2 years ago
She had a some dance combos that also give her bonus
macassar88 1 year ago
@Peaceplatform this is the code that I use to coach during so I think I can remember most of her element values.
pass 1: 2.5 twist+ punch front pike = D+A = =0.1 + 0.2 connection =0.3
pass 2: whip+ double twist+ shushunova = A+C+A = 0.2 connection = 0.2
pass 3: 1.5 twist + punch front tuck = C + A = 0.1 connection =0.1
total tumbling = 0.6
Dance Bonus
sequence 1: double turn+ wolf full = C+B = 0.1, or C+C= 0.2
sequence 2: triple turn + double stag = D+A = 0.2
SV= 9.9 or 10.0..
gymns411 1 year ago
@gymns411 - awesome, thanks for this!
Can you please tell me a bit more about the COP though - ie, how does 0.6 tumbling plus 0.4 dance bonus give her a SV of 9.9/10!

it's not really a style thing. actually i've seen an interview of her and she admitted that she doesn't run fast and that's why she's weak on vault.
