When I first heard "Liar" it struck me as something that would be playing at Macy's in the men's cologne section, so I would skip over it to hear the pounding Peter Hook bass of "Chemical". But "Liar" grew on me and now it's one of my favorite songs on Republic.
I really like Republic. It is about California. Liar is the song about the politicians, probably the governor of California in those days. The cover of the album shows the contrast between people having fun (beaches, Hollywood, etc) and the negative aspects of life out west (forest fires, mudslides, earthquakes, riots)
@veloboy A little bit of both. I read the reviews on "Republic" and then listened to all the songs and came to a similar conclusion myself. This album is totally California.
Really? COuld be true, could be about politicians in general but back in 1993 I remember reading several times Liar was about Tony Wilson and the end of Factory records and how New Order felt Tony Wilson had gradually lost it, scattering the band's money to the wind.
@MickHaines i'm inclined to agree, this album was recorded in Ibiza, so it could also contrast the fun of the beach there, and the struggles back home in england, both personal and political.
I don't know why people unrated this album this is new order fools best band on earth!

Given that - in my opinion - they released weaker tracks from Republic, I cannot believe this wasn't a single.
