  • Great video man learned a lot. How often do you change the filter and the plugs?

  • @mattyspy1327 It kinda depends on how you ride it... for the oil I've heard 1000 2500 5000 just when it gets looking dirty, kinda a personal preference. On the plugs depends too... some say 10-15k but you can also foul them and have to replace them sooner. I usually change both every year just to be on the safe side. Might call a dealer and see what they recommend. Thanks for watching!

  • Nice bike bro. Thanks for the help! Just got an 01 sportster 1200 myself, and that answered all my questions.

  • I just bought a 1989 883 sportster, dont know to much about them, this will help me out, thanks

  • @jeepbeach Hey not a problem man... have fun with it!

    Thanks for watching!

  • Im at 10,000 miles now. help! After my usual warm up, and then in less than one city blocks distance the sportster will start to sputter. I mean all electrical shuts off, or the speedometer, drops to zero and stalls for a second. however it lasts for only a second or 2 and happens as i increase my speed from idle or gear changing.

  • @ShmooyShmoo Could possibly be your coil going out or a bad connecting on your plug wire, really could be alot of things. Might check into those though... let me know when you figure it out.

  • Hey, thanks for posting this. Got a 2001 1200C here in New Zealand. Needed to change oil and was unsure how .. was great to see this clip. I agree with the comment about Amsoil being the best you can buy. Got a KXF450 dirtbike i do vet mx on here, my son borrowed it and put the oil filter in incorrectly..it blocked the flow!! Ran it for 2hrs at race speeds before a strange noise started. We found others running different oil have done this and most get less than 20 mins before a seizure!

  • @marknz911 Hey thanks for watching... glad it helped! I'll look into getting some Amsoil and start running it then... thanks for the input and watching man!

  • Quick tip take a 2 liter soda bottle (I prefer coke) pour soda into a picture to be mixed with rum later cut the bottom off the bottle then make 2 parallel cuts about 3 to 4 inches apart starting at the bottom and goin up to where it starts to curve at the top the cut across to remove the flap slip it under your filter when you remove it so you don't get oil everywhere drink rum and coke

  • @AsphaltCowboyPacks or you can use the coke to clean your toilet and drink the rum strait

  • Respond to this video... You should get a manual its 3 quarts you should also prime the pump to prevent cavitation

  • How many miles do you put on your bike each season ? I just picked a nice little 93 883 DLX, it needs the oil, filter and plugs changed. What type of plugs does it take ?

  • @RECONDO101st The Harley plug # is a 6R12, I never get out as much as I'd like to but I put some miles on it! Thanks for watching man!

  • @jfrost77hd Thanks bro !!!!

  • @RECONDO101st Hey not a problem... Ride on buddy!

  • Nice bike! I have an '02 1200 Custom and just got done with my oil and plugs. I use the Amsoil 20W-50 Synthetic oil and NGK plugs. I send my oil in for testing and have found that the Amsoil is the absolute best for this motor. The "genuine" Harley oil was the worst in the tests so I stopped using it right away and never looked back. HUGE improvement in temperature and shifting.

  • @PaulPradaShow Hey thanks man... that's good to know! Thanks for watching and for ther tip! Take it easy man!

  • Thanks a lot man! I just got an 2007 Sportster 883r and this video is gonna be a good help in my first oil change on my first Harley Davidson.

  • @Nommanic Hey good to hear man... glad to help! Ride on man!

  • Have you replaced your tires yet? I also have a 2001 sportster and need new tires. I have been told the Metzler tires out perform the Dunlop tires Harley uses. Do you have any input on this?

  • @rjt2349 Actually still havent put tires on it yet... getting pretty bald really need to here soon! Sorry cant give you any opinion right now... hey give me yours if you get some soon! Thanks for watching man!

  • Thanks for filming the oil change. Couldn't figure it out from verbal instructions from my buddy on the phone. I have the longer oil filter (shows more chrome!)

Those SS braided lines look sharp. I just ordered them for the brakes and clutch.

I may convert my 2001 883 to a 1200 (883 uses lower gear ratio). Ride safe!

  • @CSEnriquezDDS Hey not a problem man thanks for watching! Thanks yeah I like the braided lines too, I also have them on the plug wires. Take it easy... Ride Safe!

  • I got the exact same bike. 6,890 miles on it now. Sounds crazy but i still got the original plugs, but put 20 -50 in it few months ago. It died on me today and pushed it 3 miles sweating bullets. I dont know if its the coil but it is losing spark once it warms up. Strange.

  • @grabba73 I had to replace the voltage regulator on mine awhile back. It's box on the front of the frame... I was out riding and stopped somewhere and got back on and nothing.... replaced the battery roadside and drove home. No problem until that battery was completly drained... batteries just werent getting charged up. Dont know the whole situation on how itr died but might check that... could be the coil though too. Good luck to you man... you'll get it!

  • That is one beautiful bike.

  • @IntenseSoldier Why thanks you! Thanks for watching!

  • thanks for the video i was looking in the manual and couldn't find an upclose picture of the drain hose,i was getting frustrated untill i watched this video..thanks again

  • @82nerd Hey not a problem glad to help.. yeah them books can be pretty vague sometimes!

    Thanks for watching!

  • thanks for the vid bud now i'm going to go get the oil and filter and do it at home again thanks...And nice bike i just got an 2001 hd sportster 1200 costom and now after watching your video i have to get me a set of the pipes..lol...love them

  • @hondaman1971 Hey not a problem man... hell of alot cheaper to do it yourself! Yeah your bike looks good bud... put the drags on it and pull the baffles!

  • will the same method apply to a 2010 Iron 883? trying to save some cash and learn more about my bike by doing it at home.

  • @giegermd Yeah should be the same.... definetly save you a few bucks!

    Thanks for watching!

  • U got a good old collection of machinery bud, what is ur sportster like riding 2 up? I'm looking at getting one, what do the stock pipes sound like?

  • @petehog72 Hey thanks man... yeah their alot of fun, cant have enough! I really like the Sportster it's got good power just kinda tall for it. Like to get something bigger eventually but ride what I can afford for now! This had the drag pipes on it when I got it and it has the baffles taken out, I like the way it sounds!

  • hey bud, nice looking bike, thanks for the vid, makes the job look nice and easy, ride safe and thanks again

  • Is the gap for an 883 the same as your 1200?

  • @plakhinov Same one? Sweet!

I had one question though, I just recently bought a new 48 from the dealership and will hit 1000 miles soon enough haha anyways is it really necessary to go to them for the first "break in" scheduled maintenance or can I just change my oil myself and check to see if everything looks good?

  • @Diva2670 ...Glad I could help...Thanks for watching!

  • I also have a 2001 1200 custom. I know nothing about working on it... I've always had it serviced. However, since I'm laid off, figure it's cheaper to do it myself. Thanks for the video!
