I found one crawling in my garage and it scared the hell out of me, until my husband squished it thinking it was a larger termite. He was saying "Oh crap, termites!".
I wasn't convinced that a termite could get that big around here so I came online to prove whether it was or not. It took me forever identifying it.
It now doesn't scare me so bad reading up on it. But they are sure ugly SOB's.
this jerusalem cricket is a victim of the horsehair worm, a parasitic worm that hijacks the insect and forces it to find a source of water to continue its life-cycle. Normally, you never find these above ground. They also do minimal damage to crops, because their main food source is other insects. Only occasionally do they nibble a root for water. They would make a good food source if they didnt have a habit of eating poisonous roots.
These are harmless - called a Jerusalem Cricket. They are gangly and usually active at night so most people never even know they are around. Do a Google search and you'll find they are found around the world. Most common in the western US.
.... Egh! -hides- I love insects and reptiles and all animals, but lord have mercy. Uh uh, no way. My god.... I'd take that thing outside and run for my life.
one time i put my shoe on something squeeshy was in it i splatered it with my foot till i took it out i thought it was a flowere but it was a fcking sick azz potato bug
