  • Why not drop it ? hopefully the circle you cut will stay intact while the rest shatters.

  • How to cut a hand-sized circle in a jewelery store's showcase?

  • Does the carbide cutter ware out quickly? How can I sharpen the ones with the wheel? What type of or manufacture of glass cutter do you recommend? I know there suppose to be carbide. Thanks.

  • @tiredfingers99

Carbide cutting wheels last a long time. Exactly how long depends on how often you use it and how hard you are pressing down on the glass. When the cutting wheel does start to go dull though, you can simply replace it. Delphi carries a number of hand-held glass cutters. The Toyo Pistol Cutters are my favorite.

  • @tiredfingers99 You should also NOT run the cutter over the egde of the glass - as is done in this clip - if you want to prolong the life of the cutting wheel. Start and finish the score line within 3 to 5 mm of edges and the glass will still break at the line made by the cutter. It might require practice but will certainly be worthwhile. I know of a TOYO cutter that is still going strong after 30 years because of this good practice. Light machine oil will help too. Don't use anything else.

  • Another thing; if the cutting wheel is in good condition you don't need to press hard. Again practice on scrap with different pressures. If you can hear the noise of the score being made, then that is hard enough. It doesn't require great force to make a good score line - the wheels are designed to do that for you. Have a look on ebay too. There are currently some very cheap Toyo cutters available from a firm that is closing down their glazing buisiness. I bought one - it's fine.

  • nice.
