  • I miss Tom and Pat!!!!

  • @6400az: Dryer and Youngblood were light, but still defended the run quite well ( more so for Youngblood), and Olsen and Larry Brooks, with Hacksaw Reynolds at MLB, were very tough to move out, as the Raiders would have found out. By comparison, Page and Marshall were easily removed, unfortunately...

The Ram lines, both offensive and defensive, were just tougher than the aging Viking lines, and this is the basis for any winning effort..

  • @6400az: I was as big a Viking as they came in 1976 ( I don't care about them anymore), but I have to acknowledge that they didn't play very well in the 76 NFC title game, but they won anyhow; I do know that as I watched the Super Bowl that year, I thought to myself, "The Rams would have given the Raiders a much better game"--why? Because the Ram front four would have stuffed the Raider rushing game, and would have put good pressure on Stabler, and the game would have been competitive...

  • @MultiNewEnglander

You may be right, but put anyone except the Vikings and they'll do better come Super Sunday. Don't know if the Rams would've stuffed the run as Dryer and Younglblood where also very light. The Vikings simpley could NOT play in January. All the reasons and discussions I've come up with or had with other fans, the most acceptable is what they say here on Youtube ( Best teams not to win the SB)........"something crazy happend to the Vikings in the Superbowl".

  • At 6400az: Not sure about the 1976 NFC Title game being "great' Viking win; the Vikes were fortunate to win, in more ways than one; they only had two great offensive plays for the entire game ( both involving Foreman), and they were held to a FG when they have a near "first-and-goal" after a blocked punt; Bryant made/helped on two huge plays taht saved the game, but they were basically outplayed; the "joy" was probably born out of relief, as many knew that 1976 might be their last strong year ..

  • @MultiNewEnglander

As a Vikings fan,I always loved great defensive plays AND the great special teams .If judged on offensive output, then it's not their greatest game. I don't think they where fortunate to win because they did it doing what they did all season. They almost blew the game wide open on several occasions. They had it at the 7 as you say, but they also had it at the 15 or so, until they threw an int.

Some of their greatest plays where in this game.I thought it was a thriller.

  • Just a great game; many kudos for posting this memorable "tie"...

The "sorest" player on the field after the game had to be Jeff Wright, the Minnesota strong safety, who was involved in a score of tackles..

Ram defense at its best here, with the Vikes totally unable to move them off the line; Fran had to throw to advance the team..

Can someone possibly post the 76 Ram/Viking title tilt, or the 74 Viking/Ram championship game?

  • Does anyone have the Viking/Redskin game from '75; even though it's a 31-30 Viking loss, the game itself was fantastic; I can still picture Foreman running by Chris Hanburger for a long TD run up the middle..

Would love to see that game, with its original broadcast, up on the screen..

  • @MultiNewEnglander I said this on the clip that's on here of that game with the highlights....that game was amazing. One of the greatest NFL games I've ever seen, probably one of the top 20. It wasn't a playoff game, but the drama and the twists and turns in that contest were hard to match. I was 9, but I remember enough to give that game its due.

  • I remember this game well; Vikes show weakness against the run, but come up big on goal line stand..

Rams' play-calling was extremely conservative, probably because of Haden's youth, and Rams' strong ground game ( McCutcheon, Cappelletti, Bertelsen, etc)..

Ridiculous throw for an INT from Tarkenton in OT, when a chip-shot FG from Cox could have won the game--I was absolutely furious with Fran for a very needless throw..

Great to hear the CBS broadcast team of Summerall/Brookshier again.

  • @MultiNewEnglander The most amazing thing, is that, Pat Haden hasn't aged a day since 1976...damn, it must be that "Rhodes Scholar" youth...

  • @MultiNewEnglander

I was furious at that interception too, but it WAS absolutey, correct to try and score rather than leaving it in the hands of Cox. As you say, it was a chip shot, BUT not for Cox. From 74' to 77' he missed 17 PAT's. In 72'... 2 weeks in a row he missed something like a 17 then a 20 something yard, last second FG to lose the game. Cox was a horrible kicker, and the reason Tarkenton went for the TD was lack of confidence in his kicker.

  • If someone would download the 76 NFC championship game of the Rams vs. Vikes I would be in heaven.

  • @tknippe

I hope you can see it sometime.I have this game, and it is my prize possesion (only second half exist though). It is the absolute, most exilirating footage of the Vikings anywhere!! The joy in the Vikings locker during the post game HAS to be seen.....Priceless!

Although the game is somewhat underrated, it has to be one of the Vikings greatest conquest EVER, easily rivaling their 69'win against the same Rams.

    Even Krause makes a tackle!!

  • The Rams and Vikings finished this game in a 10-10 tie. The Vikings had the ball late in the 4th Quarter when a Ram strip the ball from a Viking and put the Rams in position to tie the game. And then late into Overtime, Fran Tarkenton threw and interception deep into Los Angeles Territory, as the Rams preserved the tie.

  • @Jiltedin2007

Yep, that's how it happened. That, Viking who fumbeled was Brent Mclanahan, the Vikings had the game in the bag and he fumbles.Perhaps a hint of things to come ??

The int. Tarkenton threw was from the 10. Simpley NO confidence in their kicker.

  • @6400az No confidence?! Their Kicker at the time was Fred Cox, who has been "Mr. Dependable" for the Vikings throughout his career in Minnesota.

  • @Jiltedin2007

Yes, I know it was Cox. He was anything BUT dependable... had already missed 1 in this game.

In the 70's, he was in fact, one of the worse clutch kickers ever.Consistently missed chip shot game winners. His short KO's gave Viking opponents field position.

SB IX,was the climax of his ineptness. Missed short FG in the 1st half. Missed the extra point (his specialty) after the blocked punt TD. Then, followed it with a short KO.That game showcased Cox's kicking. He was horrible.

  • @6400az You may be correct. But if Fred Cox was that bad, why did he kick for the Vikings for his entire NFL Carrer?

  • @Jiltedin2007

THAT is t what I've always wondered myself !

Ever since he missed two short FG's in the 70' playoff loss to the 49ners I paid close attention to him. His last second kicks, he just would plain miss. Never seen anything like it.

    In his career Cox :

    - made 2 of 24 FG outside the 50 !!

    -50 of 137 from 40-49 !

-from 1963 to 1973 he missed only 3 extra points. Then the goal post where moved back and from 74' to 77' he missed 17 !!

-Line drive & short KO's. You tell me?

  • These old games are great. I was 5 at the time so I don't remember this game. Just a few points. 1) Love the National Anthem. Notice how grant would make the team stand single file with their helmets under their right arm. 2) The crowd is dead. 3) Even the refs stink, how do you miss the false start on the Rams back at 7:46 or so?

Lastly, it's amazing how the Vikes handled the Rams in these days come playoff time, while the Rams gave Dallas fits and the Cowboys gave us problems.

  • surprised the copyright nazis didn't take this down yet

  • Thanks for posting, any chance you can get the NFC championship from this same year?

  • I was at this game as a 10 year old.. the post below is incorrect, this game was a 10-10 tie. It was the NFC Championship where the Vikes jumped to a 17-0 lead.

  • @tknippe

No, not exactly incorrect. I was responding to another post regarding the 1976 NFC Championship Game. I realize in this game the Vikings never jumped to a 17-0 lead as the final score was 10-10. My choice of words could have been better, should have said on TAHT afternoon instaed of THIS...

  • Can anybody submit the december playoff heartbreak in bloomington that same season. Rams were better but the viks had the tark and solid kicking.

  • @thranktwaddler I have the second half of that game. Rams kicking was so bad.

  • @thranktwaddler

Arguably the Rams where better, but the Vikings where to the Rams what AFC teams where to the Vikings come January.

On this afternoon Tarkenton's game just was'nt there.Threw an int. as the Vikings where ready to put the game out of reach.Ahead 17 -0 Fran throws a pick in the endzone from about the Ram 15. He also had what could have been a critical fumble. Vikings kicking game was hardly solid, Cox consistently missed exrtra points. Neil Clabo, was gone after a year or 2..

  • Thanks for posting.
