  • and here i'am on my windows 7 machine...

  • How do I upgrade my win 7 to be like that?

  • Thumbs up if you have windows 3.11 on your iPod touch/iphone

  • they changed it from "paintbrush" to paint?

  • wow, awesome.

best part is when you minimize one program, the program icon stays in the desktop.

sorry for my worst english, i'm brazilian.

    really sorry =)

  • kakekikoku

  • Starfield blew my mind as a 9 year old.

  • Isso e simulador ou real???

  • @mateusfb23

I used a virtual machine to record this video, but I have it also running on my 386

  • I think my mother would enjoy that. It's idiot proof.

  • This was my first OS ever when I was a kid... like 9 yrs old. It was running on a 486 DX2 66 Mhz which was pretty good at that time ^^

Thx for posting and letting me remember those times :)

  • they changed it from "Write" to "Notepad"!!

  • @Taking1n1

    Actually no;

    Write became Wordpad

Notepad also exists in Win3.1 and it's still the same in XP (and probably even in Vista/7)

  • @i386dx Notepad is even in windows 8 Dev Preview

  • @GameMaster337

Is it? Hehe, thanks for the information!

  • @i386dx You're welcome! And by the way, notepad has existed since Windows 1.0 and all the ones after it.

  • My firs p.c. it was a P75mhz,16ram, 640mb hdd, and it has o.s, win 3.1.

  • LOVE that design on the Solitaire deck

  • @i386dx in Solitaire you can drag the King to the empty space you know :)

  • I want it but very simple, no taskbar, its like I'm using a very old Windows.

  • hello blast from the past. windows 3.1 was the first computer my dad bought. we were still living at the old house at the time. i was about 4 years old when it came out and i remember my dad would let me go on "paintbrush" which looks exactly the same as how i remembered it. he also had that awesome "johnny castaway" screen saver for windows 3.1, which managed to download onto my XP, but when that crashed, I haven't been able to find a version of it for 7. How i miss that.

  • I still have this os on my dads old IBM ps/1. Used to spend hours on it as a kid using paint

  • It's sad when you look how fast it loaded, compared to today's operating systems. We are going behind.

  • @redsquirrelftw

Agreed. My 286 boots it faster than a modern computer boots Vista.

  • lololol. stolen from apple

  • my very first window OS

  • This looks more fun and user friendly than Windows Vista & 7

  • @DSIProductions

    actually, it is.... ;-)

  • I agree there but shamefully it was worse than TOS/GEM, not to mention risc os or amiga os.

Brings back memories though of school, typing in win to get windows to load, then playing microsoft arcade or chips challenge! Fun times, but it was only when the internet pentium 3's and BBC computers were already fully booked for lunch.

  • @DSIProductions For me 95 and 98 and more user friendly.

  • windows 95 come on 64 floppy disk, and in the installation you have the error in the disk 63!!! jajaja

  • windows 95 come on 64 floppy disk, and in the installation you have the error in the disk 63!!! jajaja

  • look @1:47 !!

It's the awesome new "Aero Snap" feature of Windows 7. (look at the ads)...

  • @tehdog22

    i know, its so EPIC!!

  • i think this computer will easily run cod modern warefare 2

  • I agree with the video comment.

I used to love booting that old machine up.

    Watching 3.11 or 95 boot.

The simplicity of yesterdays OS's are whats

needed in the OS's of today.

  • meh, i prefer mac

  • lol thats weird. windows 98 is 91 years/times better than windows 7! XD

  • windows 2000 is 1902 years ahead of windows 98.....

  • Of course it is, it has less UI, less security and less "everything" running as the BASE OS.

on todays computers it shouldnt be a problem.

But lets see Win98 run todays games :) lol

Doesnt matter how fast it is if it cant

  • i like windows 98 and 2000 more than

    windows XP and vista

  • lol, u are from belgium?! i'm from the

    netherlands, lol.

nice video, i wish i knew a way to use

    windows versions without losing the

version i use now (windows vista)

  • you can use a dual boot computer or virtualbox

  • wedewr

  • you fuking amatuer

  • ms dos ftw

  • This is the first windows I used. I used apple os before that in school.

  • This brings back so many memories! I used to use 3.1 to run programs like "Windows Draw!" and I had some Atari games on it too... Great times! I'm more of a Mac user these days (have been for about a decade now!) but I'll always have a soft spot for 3.1 :)

  • bill gates has done it again

  • ahh the goood old days

  • lucky you.. i could never boot the install disk.

  • That's because the installation disks weren't bootable...

You had to install DOS first, boot into DOS and than install Windows ;-)

  • @i386dx My memory is hazy it's been so long, but even after installing win 3.1 you STILL had to run it from the DOS command prompt?

    C:\

    C:\ dir

    C:\ cd windows

    C:\WINDOWS\ win.exe

    lawl

It's funny, watching that video reminds me how superior the layout of win 3.1 was, everything was right where you'd expect it to be, intuitive, and functional. As opposed to the clunky shiny OS's built for the idiot masses, I laugh when I walk see all the lemmings in an Apple store, so clueless about technology

  • @Jizzmonster Autoexec.

  • Comment removed

  • when was lauched 3.1?

    93 or 94 i think ????

  • It was 1992. ;-)

  • Wait, does it support only up to 4MB of memory? :(

  • oh yes . All Disk Operating Systems are supporting mb ( I mean MegaBytes)

  • Compact Disc?? What is this crazy futuristic technology of which you speak?

  • Windows 3.1 was built like a damn tank. I could set my computer on fire and put a bullet through it and Windows 3.1 still wouldn't crash.

  • Windows used to be cool. Now Window users are all stereotyped as fools. Thanks a lot Vista makers - go back to the drawing board.

  • @pandaKrusher

    Lol ! :D

  • i know how to use windows 3.1 on my psp it is fast and cool!!!

  • Windows 3.1 was an advancement in the GUI but it was still riding on DOS. It was fun installing DOS and Windows when my system crashed.

    Good times,, good times!!

I miss my old 486SX 25 from Tandy , hehe

  • oh that machine cost about 8 grands at the time?

i still cant believe we were had to buy a computer with price $8,000 bucks back to the day. i dont like amd/ati however they made this gpu/cpu cheap and force intel/nvidia inventing new technology with low cost that everyone can afford them.

  • better than vista

  • ja,ja,ja, you alright.

  • Ah, the memories! Hard to believe we all used to work with that.

  • I loved Windows 3.1 it was the first version of Windows that I used.

I feel very nostalgic about it and still keep a couple of older PC's that run it.

  • @m9078jk3 i have that feeling

    very nostalgic

  • @m9078jk3 It was not the first I ever used but it's the one I remember the best. Like you I have it still running so I can go back to it.

In school we had 5 computers in the class room and while 4 were new, one was this old, dirty thing that ran 3.1. No one but me would use it but it was also the only computer with games. I had quite a lot of fun with it.

  • Ugh. I absolutely hated Windows 3.1

Back then I preferred using either Apple Macintosh or Commodore Amiga. Even the lowly Commodore 64 had a better operating system (GEOS).

  • that is better than windows xp

  • will this version will let ya go on internet?

  • ya it does

  • Yeah this is what I started out with years ago. You can get online with it but you have to install Internet software separately first, configure the modem and you're all set to go. The only thing I hated was configuring the memory cause back then, 8 megs of ram used to cost like $150!

  • Dude where did you get the iso and boot, or did you get the cd image?!!!! Btw, this is in VMware workstation.

  • Windows 3.11 didn't came on CD, it was sold on floppy. I just still have it from those old days, but if you search hard enough you can find it on the internet.

And indeed it's VMWare, but other programs like Virtualbox will work too.

  • Jesus, after all these years you still have it? lucky...

  • You can search on Ebay, I found one there. Maybe I'll buy it sometime

  • Thankfully, I trashed my old HP Pavilion desktop (not really, but I gave it to charity), and I have a more reliable Dell laptop in its place, with Windows Vista Home Premium.

I wanna get an Alienware, though. XD

But, on the slowdowns -- mainly, the useless programs you speak of are mainly crapware that you don't really need (much of it could have their "Startup when Windows starts" option disabled, or the user could just as easily uninstall that program).

  • I had uninstalled the crapware, and my laptop runs faster than it normally would be running.

  • better than Vista :-D

  • Yeah...

Maybe because I`m nostalgic about computer or I have too slow PC for better Windows.

  • Wow man! Does this bring back memories! :D

Could you please tell me where you got this from?

  • Any other way of getting this instead of buying the CD is illegal.

  • Do you know where you could buy it? :)

  • Sorry, but maybe they are selling it on Ebay or something, I don't know... My dad has the windows 95 CD, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, And many others, but I don't know where he got those from. Sorry :( ( I said it before, and I say it again: Maybe Ebay has it!)

  • you can download it from strangebutfunny . com

in the navagation area select weird downloads and in the old windows selection (no download limit!)

  • Cool! Thanks a lot! Its kinda a bit late tho. :) I just bought a copy from eBay! :D

  • y welcome did you see the others, i host/own that site tell everyone you can about strangebutfunny

  • All right! Will do! Great site!

  • Lol I had 3.1 On my old laptop.. But that battery died... and you couldnt charge it.. It was a nice laptop too.

  • Honestly!! Why do people hate vista??? I like Vista's Taskbar better than Windows 7

  • I don't get the vista hate either. I've had vista for a while now and haven't had any problems with it and don't see anything wrong with it.

  • Windows Vista R-O-C-K-S!

Windows 7 is better, though. You should try it in a Virtual Machine!

  • I loved Windows 3.1 and hated when I had to change to Windows 95. But not as much as I hate Vista.

  • wow they have not changed microsoft paint that much since they created it

  • In fact, Microsoft didn't create Paint(brush) ZSoft Corp did... ;-)

  • brings back alot memories, i started out with 3.1 and i know a few people who still use it.

it was very small and ran fast even on the super slow computers of its time.

  • does it have internet explorer or somthin?

  • Not installed by default, but there are browsers for Windows 3.1 (Internet Explorer, Netscape...)

  • can u please tell me how? i cant just drag it on to the desktop to the machine

  • how do you live with that?

  • i use 3.1 on my LS-486 computer I restored.

It is far better, even if not as cool looking, than vista.

  • memories ;-)

  • Good ol Windows

  • Were can you download Windows 3.1?

  • There are some places you can get it from... *looks at his inbox and waits*

  • do u know where i could find a keyboard driver for windows 3.11??

  • internet != windows program

  • put this with windows 3.9 and what do you get?

  • mattfox14, LOL! Windows 7

  • yeah mate apple didnt really rip xerox off oh thats right they did get your facts right

  • Before Windows 95 I cannot have seen the point of any home user wanting a computer unless they were working from home apart from that its only decent functions was for businesses and pretty boring so I had to go back in time and use Windows 3.1 I would have just killed my self lol and people complain about Vista!

  • Well, there was internet before Windows 95 existed, believe it or not. Luckily my parents had a PC back then, too. Prodigy Classic and King's Quest depended on it. :D

  • we had prodigy on 3.1! where in the world is carmen sandiego had a new adventure every week. but i clearly remember dl pam andersons nekkid boobies and printing them out only to have the printer jam until my mom fixed it and out popped pams tatas. then i got a lecture on what "real women" look like, in how i was warping my expectations. needless to say, i still loved looking at inflated tatas, but never tried to print agian.

  • actually looking at this, it reminds me of OSX.

as i mentioned, the column view looks like program manager. But also, when you minimise the app goes to the bottom of the screen as an icon on the desktop AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN, and to view the app again you click that icon. Almost like how the dock menu works.

This might explain why i liked the dock so much.. subconcious nostalgia.

  • this truly was when it all started for me. Our family didn't have a PC til 98. One of our relatives had Win3.1 and Amiga was my platform for games.

DOS and Win3.1 was my beginning to Microsoft. I have no idea what the first Mac OS was i used, but it wasn't long after this.

Funny how Program Manager looks like "Apple's" Finder Column view. lol

  • I remember my dad got an IBM PS/2 50Z using win 3.1 from work in the late 1980's. he had it for years! Even still used after we upgraded to win 95. Of course that was for work only really.

  • Wow... This brings back memories. :)

  • this was, and always will be, my favorite OS

  • Is that Ubuntu Linux emulating Win 3.1?

  • It's Windows 3.11 on VMWare (which runs indeed on Ubuntu Linux)

  • Thanks :)

  • I got Windows 3.00a, 3.1, and 3.11

    Windows 3.xx is AWESOME!!!!

  • Someday our grandsons gonna do it with Windows XP

  • soooooooooooooo kool man

i remember there was one of dese in my class (year 5 - 2003). Shame everyone hated it and rather use the windows 98's

  • yes shame. I love win 3.1 no one respects it though. real shame.

  • windows 3.1 was the first windows with sound the startup sound was ''TADA'' i always loved that and the card games the star screensaver....

    WINDOWS 3.1 ROCKS

  • i like 3.1

  • i have xp . 3.1 is so old

  • the legend of sol-tar with kick ass fighting missals!!!

  • The drivers setting on the 3.1 control panel have number settings that confuse the fuck out of me. I'm glad newer versions of Windows with easier driver installation rendered the 3.1 control panel obsolete.
