hello blast from the past. windows 3.1 was the first computer my dad bought. we were still living at the old house at the time. i was about 4 years old when it came out and i remember my dad would let me go on "paintbrush" which looks exactly the same as how i remembered it. he also had that awesome "johnny castaway" screen saver for windows 3.1, which managed to download onto my XP, but when that crashed, I haven't been able to find a version of it for 7. How i miss that.
I agree there but shamefully it was worse than TOS/GEM, not to mention risc os or amiga os.
Brings back memories though of school, typing in win to get windows to load, then playing microsoft arcade or chips challenge! Fun times, but it was only when the internet pentium 3's and BBC computers were already fully booked for lunch.
This brings back so many memories! I used to use 3.1 to run programs like "Windows Draw!" and I had some Atari games on it too... Great times! I'm more of a Mac user these days (have been for about a decade now!) but I'll always have a soft spot for 3.1 :)
@i386dx My memory is hazy it's been so long, but even after installing win 3.1 you STILL had to run it from the DOS command prompt?
C:\
C:\ dir
C:\ cd windows
C:\WINDOWS\ win.exe

It's funny, watching that video reminds me how superior the layout of win 3.1 was, everything was right where you'd expect it to be, intuitive, and functional. As opposed to the clunky shiny OS's built for the idiot masses, I laugh when I walk see all the lemmings in an Apple store, so clueless about technology
you know how Youtube works right? with the watch? v=TheVideoToWatch
Then explain to me how, back in 1993, when this Technological Marvel called Windows 3.1 (a pile of crap in my opinion) survived and this incredible Operating System that could RUN 3.1 inside it did not. v=j02b8Fuz73A
The answer is: Too expensive (>$5,000) and 2) it was too far ahead of its time. The Internet as you know it was born on this OS! NOT Windoze 3.1
i still cant believe we were had to buy a computer with price $8,000 bucks back to the day. i dont like amd/ati however they made this gpu/cpu cheap and force intel/nvidia inventing new technology with low cost that everyone can afford them.
@m9078jk3 It was not the first I ever used but it's the one I remember the best. Like you I have it still running so I can go back to it.
In school we had 5 computers in the class room and while 4 were new, one was this old, dirty thing that ran 3.1. No one but me would use it but it was also the only computer with games. I had quite a lot of fun with it.
Yeah this is what I started out with years ago. You can get online with it but you have to install Internet software separately first, configure the modem and you're all set to go. The only thing I hated was configuring the memory cause back then, 8 megs of ram used to cost like $150!
Windows 3.11 didn't came on CD, it was sold on floppy. I just still have it from those old days, but if you search hard enough you can find it on the internet.
And indeed it's VMWare, but other programs like Virtualbox will work too.
Thankfully, I trashed my old HP Pavilion desktop (not really, but I gave it to charity), and I have a more reliable Dell laptop in its place, with Windows Vista Home Premium.
I wanna get an Alienware, though. XD
But, on the slowdowns -- mainly, the useless programs you speak of are mainly crapware that you don't really need (much of it could have their "Startup when Windows starts" option disabled, or the user could just as easily uninstall that program).
Sorry, but maybe they are selling it on Ebay or something, I don't know... My dad has the windows 95 CD, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, And many others, but I don't know where he got those from. Sorry :( ( I said it before, and I say it again: Maybe Ebay has it!)
Before Windows 95 I cannot have seen the point of any home user wanting a computer unless they were working from home apart from that its only decent functions was for businesses and pretty boring so I had to go back in time and use Windows 3.1 I would have just killed my self lol and people complain about Vista!
Well, there was internet before Windows 95 existed, believe it or not. Luckily my parents had a PC back then, too. Prodigy Classic and King's Quest depended on it. :D
we had prodigy on 3.1! where in the world is carmen sandiego had a new adventure every week. but i clearly remember dl pam andersons nekkid boobies and printing them out only to have the printer jam until my mom fixed it and out popped pams tatas. then i got a lecture on what "real women" look like, in how i was warping my expectations. needless to say, i still loved looking at inflated tatas, but never tried to print agian.
as i mentioned, the column view looks like program manager. But also, when you minimise the app goes to the bottom of the screen as an icon on the desktop AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN, and to view the app again you click that icon. Almost like how the dock menu works.
This might explain why i liked the dock so much.. subconcious nostalgia.
I remember my dad got an IBM PS/2 50Z using win 3.1 from work in the late 1980's. he had it for years! Even still used after we upgraded to win 95. Of course that was for work only really.
The drivers setting on the 3.1 control panel have number settings that confuse the fuck out of me. I'm glad newer versions of Windows with easier driver installation rendered the 3.1 control panel obsolete.
and here i'am on my windows 7 machine...
