Probably by '79-81, but I've noticed styles halway stick around for awhile. Like you'll still see feathered hair and 80s styles in videos up to 1993 or so. I bet Lionel just got attached to the afro, lol.

LMAO! My brother and I use to say that about Lionel's fro (circa 1981 to 1983) and Michael Jackson's (while looking at the cover of the Jacksons Triumph album). We use to call it a Ja-fro. Actually thats not a jherri curl. Its just a texturized fro/shag that makes it loose and more managable without chemically altering it (it was popular from 1979 to about 1984! Michael Jackson (1979 to 1982), JT Taylor from Kool & The Gang, Ray Parker Jr. and even Todd Bridges sported that proper non curl!

It depends on the length of the afros (larger lengths went out of style in 1979 in favor of a shag while the S-Curl and "not so jheri curl" slowly became popular ). Some black people wore afros up until 1983 (afros and long lengths of hair is needed to make your hair into a jheri curl or a "not so curly" yet looser shag). Lionel Richie did'nt get a jheri curl until 1983 when Can't Slow Down came out, but it was'nt as glossy or as messy as many people wore it.

Afros were popular until 1981-82, but black people grew (or kept) afros into the 80s if they wanted a jheri curl. Afro Shags replaced big afros around 1979-1980. Lionel Richie has a afro shag of which he sported until 1983.
