Why the hell you need BlueRay on a NAS? If you need to back up your NAS, it is cheaper to by another NAS and do a NAS to NAS backup rather than on to BlueRay.

Actually Vista (even SP2) in my experience is FAR slower for network transfers over gigabit than XP, Server 2008, and Windows 7.

From my Windows Home Server (non-RAID), I can easily pull at 50-60MB/s from Server 2008, whereas when I was running Vista I was capped at about 12MB/s.

The slow transfer speeds for the LG NAS *may* be related to the unit itself, but it also may simply be the fault of Vista.

that's terribly weird because when i was at my friends house i had windows vista on my PC and he had windows XP on his and i was transferring a filer over his network and i was getting about 70MB/sec off his PC and with no raid setup.

it could be becaus his PC is windows XP. but i doubt it. i dont know why you get wayy lower speeds. iv never played with a NAS and i probbly never will

It's something I've observed sporadically on Windows Vista vanilla, SP1, and SP2. It probably has something to do with the LAN controller + driver revision + who knows what else.

Also, try playing a media file in WMP while you transfer. Your transfer rates will tank for no reason. It's just a little stupid limitation of Vista. I switched to Server 2008 some time ago and I haven't looked back. With some tweaking you can make it almost exactly Vista, but with all of the suck removed.

well i dont really think windows vista is as bad as everyone says it is. but ill try out that WMP thing.

i bet windows 7 will have the same problems since its just a tweaked version of windows vista with a new GUI.

I suppose it's possible, but it IS fixed in Server 2008, so I know it can't be that difficult, since Server 2008 is pretty much Vista.

iv never really played around with any Windows server OS's. would you say they are comparable to regular windows?

i know quite a bit about tech stuff but as i have never really used a server before i have no idea how a server OS would compare to a regular OS

But seriously there are a lot of features that any normal desktop user would NEVER touch. I'm only using it because I got a cheap copy and it fixes the network bug. There are a couple small disadvantages as well.
