A Bacharach tune, at a time when he was stretching the boundaries of R'n'B... and, having compared SW to Johnny Hodges in the past, in this performance, the high range, popping-out of the melody by "Eivets" sounds like Herbie Fields in his epic recording of "Harlem Nocturne," playing notes that are not on the horn.
@tuxguys A little background: House is not a Home was a collaboration of Bacharach/David with Dionne Warwick, for whom he(they) wrote a great many songs..they were 'the' team from the early '60's on. She sang all of his hits people think were later meant for others: Walk on By, They Long to be Close to You - hers first. Fabulous partnership. 38 chart hits. Then Stevie became Eivets to record 'square' music but it wasn't well received then, only recognized as brilliant years later.
@ElizabethGS Thanks for the info, and I'm sure anybody reading this page that didn't already know it will find it valuable and informative. You neglected to mention the stuff they wrote for Marty Robbins, Gene Pitney, Chuck Jackson, and the Shirelles, all predating the work with their ultimate muse, Warwick.
(Incidentally, your profile says you're a returning chrom. harp player in NY: One of the best in the world, Richard Hunter, is next door to you in CT; check him out.)
Décidément je découvre ! Stevie Wonder est une référence pour moi; mais je ne pensais vraiment pas qu'il était possible - voire même envisageable - de faire un arrangement à l'harmonica ! Et là, bingo ! C'est super ! Bravo !
I've known about this old album for a long time--but had never heard it. Thank you for posting!! P.S. There's a YouTube video of Stevie playing 'Alfie' on a TV show with Burt Bacharach.
this so so beautiful it makes me reflex on times that were easier and makes me what to run throw flowers

The arrangements on this LP are nothing short of heroic...
...and with the Funk Bros. as the rhythm section, yet.
(Oh, "Eivets" is good, too.)
