it's very far from a modern setting, their cannons are pathetically simple. besides gnomergan was in vanilla, robotic mobs were in vanilla and BC, it's not that bad really, and ultimately it's still about a bunch of folks using swords and sorcery to kill various mythical creatures.

I agree, partially. I don't like all the motor bikes, tanks, cannons and all that either. But one must not remember that the motorised vehicles existed also in Vanilla. It's all being dragged a bit too far right now. I liked the flying mounts though, I still use my gryphon.

It's not what a villain does that makes a great villain, its who they are. Kael thas has an over the top agenda but can relate to the average "adventurer", and he came from a well constructed story. When you just start playing Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne, you have no idea that Kael thas will end up as one of the main villains,

Sargeras really was never seen and is way too alien to be a top villain.

I didn't say Kael was the leader, but I was saying that it would have been a lot more interesting if he was the leader. Again my point was that being big bad and scary doesn't mean its a good villain. Kael is more cunning has a bitter history and a villain a player can relate to. That is what makes a great villain.

I just fear the day that Blizzard will bring Sargeras into WoW and make him the main villain. Yet another Burning Legion invasion.

My final reason why I think the Scourge is a much better villain organization that the Legion is that, the Legion was WAY too over the top. The average legion soldier was nearly as big as on ogre, if not as big. Its not a realistic image to see the armies of the Alliance, Horde or Sha Tar go charging against an army of oversized demons.

The Scourge was more balanced, they had their big guys, but they also had a combination of generals, basic soldiers, and auxiliary forces.

Nah it was 3 times, and the third time the Legion tried to invade azeroth (Burning Crusade) they only occupied one small island. For the most part they couldn't even land a full force in azeroth, only outland.

The Scourge just seems more organized. Arthas is not a "me big me smash" villian, but someone who is also a plotter and cunning. Even the generals of the scourge are interesting. The legion's supporting characters didn't even have personalities.

Not so true about their success. It's how the villain is portrayed at what makes them a great villain or not. Mannoroth was also responsible for turning the orcs into a blood thirsty race, but that doesn't mean he is a great villain.

A perfect example is Blackmoore. The villain Blackmoore is a GREAT villain, because of his personality and ego. He failed at the end but that doesn't make him less of a villain, If he was still alive he would make a GREAT villain in WoW.

KJ was a terrible and disappointing villain. He never was really part of the Burning Crusade aside from being the leader of the Legion, but even that he was seldom mentioned.

He was not really cunning and was what a villain should not be. The whole idea of the "me big, me smash" type of villain is not a good one. Kael Thas was the other prime villain, and he was a GREAT villain if you really knew his agenda. But most people believed he was ignorant of the burning legion.

KJ just came out of nowhere at the end. Kael thas had the intention of having the world destroyed out of sheer bitterness and he was a great villain but players never knew that, even lore buffs believed he was unaware of the legion's intention, which is not true.

Illidan died too soon, and most players did not know who he was, and there was no intention to go to war against him.

WotLK had better villains. Arthas had more of a cunning imagine, and everyone knew who he was.

That is not relevant to what makes a good villain. I'm not saying a villain can't be over the top, but if the Villain is over the top its either hit or miss.

Arthas was a great villain because he was able to relate to the average hero of the Alliance and even horde. That is what makes a great villain, someone who is able to compare similarities to the hero. Arthas had a complicated past, and has his own person evil agenda. Not just destroying the world to be evil.
