dis song is a classic story, when i first heard it in a small fishing village on irelands south east coast i was moved by its simplisity... i asked the singer for where he d heard it and its name and was shocked to here it was an austrailian song.its one of the best ballads i ve ever heard and iv began learning the song
I was introduced to this song whilst on the road from Perth up the west coast on a trip with my Aussie family...and now it holds more memories than I can think of in one go...John Williamson is the Truest Bluest heartfelt singer I know of :) Good on ya Mate
John Williamson is not just a musician. He is a poet. I love him. I'm not a real appreciator of country music. However, John Williamson is at the top. He kicks American country music by far. He sings about the country. He doesn't sing depressing songs about love that has gone bad. He sings about love and our wonderful country. I love him. He is great.
i had this playin on my mp3 player as i was shutting the oldest sugar mill in aus down and i tell ya it still had the same meaning because what he is signing about is what made the 139 year old mill down and what hurt the most was that my two hands done the dirty work
Classic aussie song.....if this man was an american singing about america he would be known worldwide....us aussies need to recognise this mans great contribution to australian culture through music.
this is one of the best from john w--only he sings this with feeling and very description like you are there --thx for making this treasure video--best version
This song is my favourite song of all time, along side Crocadile Roll with Pixie. Keep up the good work John! This guy is amazing, 10x beter live in concert, I've been to 3 of his concerts, absolutely fantastic! if you like his albums, see him in concert! Best experience you'll ever have!
No I had not viewed Connie Cullen's version of the song. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.Connie does an excellent job considering the noise and distractions of an Irish Pub.Those Irish sure know a good folk song when they hear one.....
Nice Version - really nice but I can't say that it has the emotional impact of the redgum version - I find the redgum version somewhat haunting, I don't know what it is but it is a very deep song.
john wlliamson i find is more of a folk, story type person very believable and real as far as the australian image goes he writes and sings what is real and relivent and that i rate but john schuman redgum top points for writing song john top points for expressing it shaun edmunds mangrove mt nsw
I haven't heard the original either, but the way John sings is great enough for me! John Williamson rules! He's truly a fairdinkum true blue Aussie! I also like 'Rip Rip Wood chip', 'Mallee Boy', 'True Blue', and of course... Home Among the Gumtrees! =D =D =D I love all the rest as well.
redgum may of wrote and sang it and tribute to a great band but you cant dispute this song wasnt written for williamson to sing great job PS SCHUMAN said in caught in the act album i met an old drover from the diamantinas on train ride and wrote this song about him,i would of love to shook the old mates hand just to meet him and listen to his life stories what an adventure on its own shaun mangrove mt nsw australia
The Dimantina Drover wasn't written by Schuman, it was written by the other redgum vocalist, you can hear on the album it's clearly not Schuman talking
@MrJingleBob I PLAYED THIS GREAT SONG IN A MUSIC PUB AND AND A FRIEND RECORDED IT ON HIS PHONE...NEXT THING I KNOW IS ITS ON U-TUBE .....I NEEDED TO GET AN INDEPENDENT VIEW OF MY VERSION WHICH IS QUICKER THAN THE ORIGINAL....THANKS AGAIN MRJINGLEBOB...CONN
i can honestly say thats the only slideshow that goes well with the soundtrack. That drover leaning on the tree towards the end could've written this song.
Why cant we all think like he sings, John Williamson is truely poetic with how he expresses himself in his music. Yeah he didnt write this one but he sure lay it down like the legend he is.
Thanks for the post it makes a man think of what j´his missing, dont go anywhere Australia.
Thank God for bands like Redgum & singer song writers like John Williamson for great Australian song, about real people us

I think John is the only singer that sings with an Aussie Accent! - Have you heard him sing "The Drovers Boy"?
