I agree with you when it comes to the story and characters. Both are sub par in my opinion to the previous FF games. Music is hit or miss.

But I'm flat out going to say this, the game gets a hell of a lot more difficult, wide open, and longer. You WILL be forced to grind when it comes to chapter 11. You will have much more difficult times ahead with some of the bosses, especially at the end of chapter 11. Looks like you're about 14 or so hours in now, I'm about 35 in and nowhere near finished.
