i think there is a maor turf war going on between HAL and NAL.if u notice all the delayed projects are headed by nal which is a research institute with science project mentality whereas hal developed things like dhruv helicopter etc are reasonably on time.HAL has turfed out NAL for the pak fa which is a jv with sukhoi so this is NAL's comeback strategy.I think we are better off making a 1 engine variant of PAK FA(a la JSF) than a completely new design with next to no commonality with pak fa.

LCA will be mainly used as interceptor whereas MCA will be used to invade enemy airspace and bomb ground targets. Kaveri at present can reach a military thrust of 52kN and a afterburn thrust of of 82.6kN. The actual requirement was 60kN military thrust and 90kN afterburn thrust. Tejas can supercruise with a 60kN(military thrust) engine. As the weight has also increased they are looking for a 90-100kN engine.

I strongly doubt that, bcoz as per drawing board spec MCA needs more powerful engine than current thrust of Kaveri and GE404 IN. May be around the end of 2009, we can see MCA first flight i hope. But who knows they might be using GE 414 for that, for flight test initially.

But later it suggests that it will have 2 vertical tails. Whatever it is we all need to wait for its 1st flight. Maybe 1 year from now, even thought they said as March 2009. Engines are not ready yet for it.

No airplane before this has ever had fuel tanks above the wing.
The very idea of external stores goes against the idea of stealth design.
Everything must be stored interally.
Stealth isn't only about one particular aspect angle, its about maximizing as many parameters as possible, and external fuel tanks is a crazy idea.
Yet every stealth aircraft recently placed into production/under development has external hardpoints. Including the F-22, F-35, and PAK FA.
It's called a multi-mission platform mate. You give it external hardpoints so that if you need more munitions in a lower threat environment, you don't need a whole different aircraft.
The idea with placing tanks on top of the wing is to have a half-measure. It will keep its RCS low from the ground (though not as low) while still giving it higher endurance.

There have been more than a few prototypes in the USA and design concepts involving pure tailless designs. This one most resembles the X-44A MANTA - multi-axis-no-tail-aircraft.

Yes, it will bleed off energy in tight turns. But this is being pushed primarily as a strike aircraft so maneuverability is less of a necessity. And India certainly has a strong software industry. If it's possible with modern computer technology, India will be able to make it work.

Ada was a committee designed language, and while C and Java were started by one or two people, they were submitted to standards committees for ratification, ie. ANSI C.

You are right. Ada does runtime checking and is very strongly typed so that one cannot mix data structures willy-nilly like you can in C and C++ ... Errors are caught by Ada that would pass right on through a C++ compiler and put the entire project at risk.

Long answer: There are solutions that are pretty close, check out photosynth by microsoft, you can upload pics of places or objects and it tries to make a 3d-ish model of it. works well most of the time actually.

i think there is a maor turf war going on between HAL and NAL.if u notice all the delayed projects are headed by nal which is a research institute with science project mentality whereas hal developed things like dhruv helicopter etc are reasonably on time.HAL has turfed out NAL for the pak fa which is a jv with sukhoi so this is NAL's comeback strategy.I think we are better off making a 1 engine variant of PAK FA(a la JSF) than a completely new design with next to no commonality with pak fa.

And by the way to all my brothers here, It will not take too long to develop MCA. Don't compare this to LCA project. While developing LCA Indian scientists had no experience and funds. MCA has got a lot of support because of the aftermath 26/11 attack and also experience from the co-developed FGFA. According to my calculations the first flight would be around 2013-2014(Wikipedia says 2012) and it would be introduced around 2017. I saw the MCA Concept Specifications and it rocks!!!!

they wont be replacing LCA's. The role of LCA is to defend homeland and to never allow enemy aircraft to entire in our airspace. LCA will be mainly used as interceptor whereas MCA will be used to invade enemy airspace and bomb ground targets. I guess LCA will stay in our airforce for the next 30 years(until 2040) with required update from time to time.

no 2 years, as kaveri at present reached the military thrust of 67 KN (2KN more than Euro engine) and 93 KN with afterburn. If a 11.5ton typoon can supercruise with 65KN then 12 ton MCA can supercruise with 67KN. but IAF asking 100KN for tejas, so process going to make it to 100KN with the french core. beore the end of 2009 or earlier part of 2010 we can see MCA 1st flight.

Kaveri at present can reach a military thrust of 52kN and a afterburn thrust of of 82.6kN. The actual requirement was 60kN military thrust and 90kN afterburn thrust. Tejas can supercruise with a 60kN(military thrust) engine. As the weight has also increased they are looking for a 90-100kN engine.

I strongly doubt that, bcoz as per drawing board spec MCA needs more powerful engine than current thrust of Kaveri and GE404 IN. May be around the end of 2009, we can see MCA first flight i hope. But who knows they might be using GE 414 for that, for flight test initially.

hey this conversation is going to programming. It was true ADA 1st announced that there wont be any vertical tail in MCA, instead uses all dimensional thrust vectoring engines. But later it suggests that it will have 2 vertical tails. Whatever it is we all need to wait for its 1st flight. Maybe 1 year from now, even thought they said as March 2009. Engines are not ready yet for it.

No airplane before this has ever had fuel tanks above the wing.
The very idea of external stores goes against the idea of stealth design.
Everything must be stored interally.
Stealth isn't only about one particular aspect angle, its about maximizing as many parameters as possible, and external fuel tanks is a crazy idea.

Yet every stealth aircraft recently placed into production/under development has external hardpoints. Including the F-22, F-35, and PAK FA.
It's called a multi-mission platform mate. You give it external hardpoints so that if you need more munitions in a lower threat environment, you don't need a whole different aircraft.
The idea with placing tanks on top of the wing is to have a half-measure. It will keep its RCS low from the ground (though not as low) while still giving it higher endurance.

No, my knowledge is only anecdotal. Hence me saying it's a "rumor" the first time I mentioned it. For all I know it was never considred, or considred and rejected.
As for maneuvering... I'm no aeronautical engineer, but wouldn't it raise the center of gravity, making it less stable and more maneuverable?
Regardless, it looks like this is meant to be a strike aircraft anyway, meaning that maneuverability would be far less of a consideration than the potential gains in stealthiness.

This tailless design is very ambitious.
There have been more than a few prototypes in the USA and design concepts involving pure tailless designs. This one most resembles the X-44A MANTA - multi-axis-no-tail-aircraft.
Couple of questions:
This appears to be a delta wing. Even with thrust vectoring, won't it bleed off kinetic energy in tight turns quickly?
Second, does India have the software engineering skill to make a good flight computer for thrust vectored control?

Yes, it will bleed off energy in tight turns. But this is being pushed primarily as a strike aircraft so maneuverability is less of a necessity. And India certainly has a strong software industry. If it's possible with modern computer technology, India will be able to make it work.

Just because India has lots of representation with companies like Microsoft and others ... does NOT automatically mean that India has the software engineering skills for mission-critical software like that used in aerospace systems.
This is much more demanding software development in terms of finding and catching bugs and ensuring absolute reliability. Its expensive and slow work, and naturally highly classified too.

Your blind loyalty to India is admirable, but you have proven nothing about India's abilities to build an unstable high performance flight control computer and software.
Unless you are an actual aerospace software systems engineer, you are a loyal Indian fanboy. I am an Indian, and I know we are smart, but so are Chinese and they have only doctored up PhotoShop images to show for their F-22 killer efforts.

I've heard that you can find almost everything you need to get started with mission critical software development online. For example, try the Ada programming language.
The difficulties are perhaps on a domain higher than software development methodologies. Most likely in accumulating a reasonable repertoire of such knowledge.
I think it's all about persistance. If you look at the history of the Indian space program, you'll see what I mean.

Yes, I know Ada is used in mission critical systems. I have compiled circuit simulation software in Ada, and I have built Ada compilers with GCC recently.
So I know what I am talking about.
Why hasn't India defined any kind of programming language and submitted it to a standards body, if they are so good?

Never knew that defining a programming language is the scale of competence for a country. Most common programming languages are one man endeavours so I think that it's more of a creative task than an organised one.
I'm not saying that India is the best or anything of that sort. It's just that there are quite a lot of hardcore geeks in India and that designing and implementing control systems isn't out of their reach.

No, but aerospace systems certainly are. As are software systems for aerospace. These need to be hard real-time, error-free, robust, and fault-tolerant.
Ada was a committee designed language, and while C and Java were started by one or two people, they were submitted to standards committees for ratification, ie. ANSI C.
Defining a standard is an indication of innovation & prowess. India still follows.

I never meant that India is the leader of technology. Just that there is vast potential.
Just for the sake of argument, Flapjax programming language was designed by an Indian citizen. He works in the US though.

No I didn't know that.
But that proves Chinese are playing Russian Roulette with their aerospace systems.
You are right. Ada does runtime checking and is very strongly typed so that one cannot mix data structures willy-nilly like you can in C and C++ ... Errors are caught by Ada that would pass right on through a C++ compiler and put the entire project at risk.
Very foolish to use C++ for mission critical.

ofcourse ur right?.C can offer more selectivity than any language that exist. But its exception handling will never end. Just like wat happens with windows and linux. They give us patches to fix it. When we fix something based on situation another one will arise,and thats gonna be never ending story, in development with C.And ofcourse programming in C is time consuming, but it shapes a good programmer.Using C is time consuming and Never ending story,so using C in such critical system is foolish.

Long answer: There are solutions that are pretty close, check out photosynth by microsoft, you can upload pics of places or objects and it tries to make a 3d-ish model of it. works well most of the time actually.

twin engines !! Most likely, this program may not take off. Joint cooperation with russia is a more realistic move, unlike china, who can't even develop an indigenous engine for its J10 (still powered by russian AL-31F engine).

man it looks amazing, but in ada site the graphical model got 2 vertical fins. dont know how the prototype will look like(ie) with verticals fins or fins less. anyway u did a nice job.

ya i know, was a bit confused about wether it will have the 2 vertical fins or not. then i read somewhere(i think wikipedia) that it won't because it can do all the manouvering with the thrust-vectoring nozzles - here i onl showed them roating vertically, but i guess the real ones will be able to rotate horizontally as well

Its a necessary evil. There will be people likely living in poverty until the end of time because of the choices they make.
Aerospace and defense spending are part of the costs of having a free and sovereign nation.
Better to have people in poverty than a nation enslaved to another more warlike backward nation such as Pakistan.

Probably not. It won't be nearly as good as the Raptor, but it doesn't have to be. India will never go to war with the USA, and the USA won't be selling any Raptors to India's neighbors. The MCA will beat the aircraft of any neighboring nations, and that is what is important.
