GRANDE SHERRIL MILNES HERMOZA E IMPONENTE VOZ Y FIGURA..
This is one of my favourite opera duets, and to see it performed so wonderfully by not only two great, handsome, talented singers but also a legendary operatic partnership is just amazing. Thank you so much for posting.
Bravii!!! I have this video signed by Sherril Milnes in person; it happened during a Master Class he gave,in where I asisted years ago...he was a kind and wonderful teacher and a real gentleman.Bravooo!!!!!
@TheBunduBallerina Dear firend,it was edited by VAI Musica and this was a gift of maestro Milnes to this humble fan, when I assisted to his master class. It is in VHS format, and is a recopilation of the best arias and duetts done by this wonderful artist and teacher, that sang with so many other great stars of the lyrical music world. I guess is better to have a good "offical" copy in DVD version by Vai Music. My best regards.
So young, so charismatic, such great voices. The 1970s were good times for opera; how great that, after the bleakness of the 1980s (when some classical stations would not even play opera - I'm lookin' at you, KINGFM in Seattle), Domingo helped to touch off the opera explosion with the 3 tenors that has brought the genre to new heights in these last twenty years.
Sherrill Milnes and Beverly Sills made an album-signing appearance at a San Francisco more years ago than I care to admit. I brought all my albums--several dozen. Milnes kindly signed all the ones with him. Sills was on all the albums. She was very funny. As she signed her photo over and over again, she exclaimed, "My God, I'm getting younger and younger.
I was about 11 when this was recorded 40-odd years ago. I fell in love with classical singing over the next few years. Had my first voice lesson at 17 and have maintained that love affair ever since. AND here we have two young international stars as their respective careers were taking off, both of whom quickly entered the pantheon of my idols (besides, in particular, Franco Corelli and Robert Merrill:)). This video remains a marvelous piece of operatic history:) - -
Me entusiasma este dueto de Don Carlo y más con estos dos fantásticos intérpretes. El tenor y el barítono favoritos del Met con toda razón. Gracias por subirnos esta joya
Is this available for purchase on DVD or other Video format? Where was it taken from???? It is superb - I have the 1971 Giulinin recording but haven't been able to find Domingo and Milnes singing Don Carlo on Video yet.
Milnes was easily the most exciting baritone I ever saw. He just took over a stage and it was one of only a few voices that could handle the Verdi A flat. The vocal problems began in the mid 80s and he hung on too long but in the late 60s and 70s he was simply magnificent. You had to see him in person. The recordings don't give true measure.
You should have seen him in Don Carlo with Giacomini, Scotto, Horne and Ghiaurov.Imagine an opera where Marilyn Horne is the weakest cast member. Ghiaurov was outstanding in the soliloquy but Milnes carried the night.
I heard and saw Milnes live only once, and he was excellent. Where and when did you experience him live? What roles did you see him in? Just curious:) -
I saw him at the Met in Trovatore, Barber, Les Vespri, Macbeth, Simon Boccenegra, Otello (with Domingo), Ernani with Domingo and Ernani with Pavarotti. Also an ill fated Aida after, the throat problem near the end. Ernani and Trovatore were downright sensational. Both operas require the high A and he hit it dead on.
There was never a problem hearing Milnes. After the throat problem, the voice lost some of it's youthful clarity. It became slightly fuzzy-just not the same sound. I'm sure he was paired with Domingo because they both could be heard in the upper balcony. The only louder voice was Birgit Nillson. The lady had a trumpet in her throat. Shook the rafters in the Salome finale.
You saw and heard Sherrill Milnes in all those performances??? I'm so jealous I could spit!! And you saw him with both Domingo and Pavarotti? I'm positively apoplectic!!! The Otello you saw with Milnes and Domingo -- was it the one they did with Renata Scotto? I adored her! Such a fabulous voice coming out of such a tiny body and mouth!!
The night I was there, the substitute was Gilda Cruz Romo-passable. I later saw him in Otello with Te Kanawa-my absolutely favorite soprano. I saw Milnes with Scotto in Macbeth and also in Don Carlo. In Miami Beach at a local school (used as an Opera House) I saw Pavarotti and Scotto in Boheme. A crowd of maybe 300. Sensational singing! I later saw Domingo and Freni in the same roles at the Met. Freni could make grown men dissolve. Domingo great in Otello even better in Walkure with Voigt.
@Peppi94 My only regret is never having heard Fritz Wunderlich who was scheduled in to sing in Don Giovanni before his tragic death. A voice of singular lyric beauty. Also I missed Bjorling-probably the greatest tenor of the 20th century. I did see Merrill. I wonder how many Yankee fans realize that the old guy singing the National anthem was once at the very top of the baritone scale? And finally Rosa Ponselle-just once singing Ernani Involami.
Bobb60, you are obviously someone who's life has been full of wonderful music. I'm supremely envious of all the performers you've witnessed, and the knowledge of stellar performers. You are so lucky!! Some of my earliest operas viewed in "Live from the Met" on PBS were performed by Milnes, Domingo and Scotto - they were my favourites from the get-go. Otello was then and is still today, my favourite opera ever.
I want this film!

This video's a good demonstration of why Domingo and Milnes were paired together so often. Their timbres are similar and they blend pretty well.
