It seems to me (I'm an American, BTW) that a middle ground could exist between the two points of view. Note: "could." Might not be easy to find.

But, I don't know if that would be a good thing. One of the few things that scares me more than politicians who don't agree are politicians who do agree. Because that's when they've discovered a new way to profit from their authoritative positions.

Then again, I'm pretty cynical about politics.

It's a shame the "compromise" thing isn't what actually happened. What actually happened was David Cameron said "I think this is a good idea" and Nick Clegg, still licking Cameron's ass clean, said "Yeah, I know I promised to do exactly the opposite, but I agree David. I'm from Australia, and we also have a co-whatchamacallit government, so everything has to be agreed on by both parties, or the smaller parties have to take sides. I personally like this kind of system better, as it means people have to agree, instead of one party saying "Fuck you, we're going to do it anyway, who cares what you think?" :)
