The truth is that the best and most popular OSs for stability and data storage are Mac OS and Linux (Unix's sons). We are talking about tested technology with several decades of experience (Unix started in 1969).

Easiest and fastest way to backup data is RAID+Mirror matrix! Its done at hardware level not software, your OS its not slowed down and you can use even 8 hard drives running in parallel if the data is really that important!
Using Windows since Windows 95. Running Vista SP1. Kinda want out just to see what else is out there. Haven't had any major issues with Vista but a few minor things have made me look into other options.
NTFS and Mac are a joke. If you really want something stable and reliable, go for Linux, besides, is free, opensource, and cool. If you don't know how to use it, then blame yourself.
no. its too dam complicated, unpopular, and unnecessary. that's why no one knows how to use it. Linux is like the baby from Windows(dad) raping OS X(mom). it's a bastard that won't go away. and the baby got a lot of looks from the daddy. so yea.
As someone who has wanted a MAC for a long time I am constantly searching for reasons or excuses to buy one. As a PC gamer I want to be able to play anything I want. If I owned a MAC I'd always be in windows, which would ruin the whole point of owning a MAC.
If I owned a Mac I don't know what I would do with it, but I still want one!
time machine ftw!!! I erased my hard drive to data stripe it raid 0 with another drive then restored it with time machine and now it's exactly the same as it was except with data striped hard drives!
best operating system ... easy Windows XP professional 32-64bit... but I will be buying Vista Ultimate 64 bit because it's the new thing =) and sp1 as arrived a while ago... so :F
I use Ubuntu as my main OS because it's open source, good performance and have all the open source applications I used on windows. It's also the safest OS. No viruses!
I do dual boot with windows because of the games, but I'm a casual gamer so that's fine.
Thanks for reminding me about backup! It's been a while... ;-)
I totally changed my mind about windows. My vista experience was that bad. Now I'm an total Ubuntu user. Only problem is that I do like games the fact that getting games to work on Linux systems is a hobby kinda sucks when you just want to enjoy the game.
I was 100% XP until last year. Now a Macbook Pro w/Leopard has become my main system, while my older systems continue to run XP for applications that I previously owned and want to continue to use. Also, I now run an Ubuntu server for file storage, etc.
So while I've switched to Mac as my "primary" platform, I think it's more important that I've expanded from only running Windows XP to employing a variety of operating systems, each in the circumstances where I find it useful.
If only the data storage is questioned it's not the matter which OS you use. The most important thing is stable and safe hardware which holds your data or archive. Every OS has more than one way to organize and maintain data (documents, pictures, music etc.) but hardware choice is crucial. If you want your saved data and backups lasts for decades you must have excellent and healthy storage hardware.
The OS i have had very good experience with is XP but Vista isn't too bad just they fact i would need to extensively use is start using the Mac OS so i could extensively explain which OS is good for data storage.
xfs on raid your choice linux or irix. This is the best for storage. It supports up to 16 exabytes. Max file size 8 exabytes use samba to share with windows systems.
You have to take into account that you literally need an UPS if you have something important on an XFS slice. The newest and most promising file systems today are ZFS and Btrfs which both support astronomically much data.
Haven't tried zfs you can use any fuse capable distro to use it. Windows needs to support fuse so that it can support more filesystems. the lack of real links in windows sucks.
i don't know who gave you the thumb down, but clearly youre one of the few who have a clue. OpenBSD is, as well as all of the other bsds the one best operating system for data security.
windows is not your only choice when it comes to pc gaming. linux + wine works great

Best thing to use for a home file server get a network server appliance such as an NSLU2 or DNS323 and back up the main HD.

Actually there was an 80186 but it never caught on much outside of the tandy 2000 and various embedded boards.
It was really was just an 8086 with a few extra commands and some support chips integrated in the same package.
Turbo 8088 clones and the 80286 proved more popular.
What he was referring to likely was the 8088 or 8086.

Using Windows since Windows 95. Running Vista SP1. Kinda want out just to see what else is out there. Haven't had any major issues with Vista but a few minor things have made me look into other options.

legrange09 3 years ago
NTFS and Mac are a joke. If you really want something stable and reliable, go for Linux, besides, is free, opensource, and cool. If you don't know how to use it, then blame yourself.
Gradius0 3 years ago
no. its too dam complicated, unpopular, and unnecessary. that's why no one knows how to use it.

Windows Vista or Leopard.. Two great choices for stability.

Using Mac for time machine and also fast ,no spy
or virus
ICHBINAHMAD 3 years ago
I use Ubuntu as my main OS because it's open source, good performance and have all the open source applications I used on windows. It's also the safest OS. No viruses!
I do dual boot with windows because of the games, but I'm a casual gamer so that's fine.
Thanks for reminding me about backup! It's been a while... ;-)

OK so thats good for timemachine on the mac what about us XP users?
whats the best for XP?

I totally changed my mind about windows. My vista experience was that bad. Now I'm an total Ubuntu user. Only problem is that I do like games the fact that getting games to work on Linux systems is a hobby kinda sucks when you just want to enjoy the game.

I use Ubuntu on my laptop while using Windows XP x64 on my desktop.
PlayerXT 3 years ago
I was 100% XP until last year. Now a Macbook Pro w/Leopard has become my main system, while my older systems continue to run XP for applications that I previously owned and want to continue to use. Also, I now run an Ubuntu server for file storage, etc.
So while I've switched to Mac as my "primary" platform, I think it's more important that I've expanded from only running Windows XP to employing a variety of operating systems, each in the circumstances where I find it useful.
But NOT Vista.

I changed my mind. I think mac is really become a big player for software and they always have good ideas. but I prefer windows
JesusDwarf 3 years ago
The OS i have had very good experience with is XP but Vista isn't too bad just they fact i would need to extensively use is start using the Mac OS so i could extensively explain which OS is good for data storage.

xfs on raid your choice linux or irix. This is the best for storage. It supports up to 16 exabytes. Max file size 8 exabytes use samba to share with windows systems.
jeffsadowski 3 years ago
You have to take into account that you literally need an UPS if you have something important on an XFS slice. The newest and most promising file systems today are ZFS and Btrfs which both support astronomically much data.
redsummers 3 years ago
Haven't tried zfs you can use any fuse capable distro to use it. Windows needs to support fuse so that it can support more filesystems. the lack of real links in windows sucks.

Openbsd
redsummers 3 years ago
i don't know who gave you the thumb down, but clearly youre one of the few who have a clue. OpenBSD is, as well as all of the other bsds the one best operating system for data security.
