  • Very informative, thanks.

  • HAHAHAHA THIS IS SOO SMART ITS CRAZY!!! i love the info. on how to keep your food long term thats cool. but hideing it? you know that latter when....what ever. all this info. will be known to others that will be looking for such tipes when....what ever it is. happensO.o.?

    uh...i need another beer.

  • So I would go to t afeed store and ask for Feed wheat? IS there a particular brand or type to get?

  • If you vac seal the bag with the 02 pack how much longer it will last?

  • What are you preparing for ?. The end of the World.

  • Hi #UN#, Let's stay in touch with my vlog channel ! Feel free to Subscribe, Like, Comment, and make Favorite to @ciciliciousnyc! <3

  • Shop vac have attachments for cleaning small items like computer parts and such. There is an attachment that reduces the diameter of the hose down to 1/4 inch and is 6" long. Since you're well versed in these preparations, I would like to ask what you think about vacuuming out the air at the point just before you sealed the last part? Would that promote reduced oxygen levels or is that too far overkill? Also, do you use an oxygen absorber in the bottom AND top?

    Thanks for your great work!

  • @VeggiePAK veggie, you can vac it out if you want. IMHO its overkill. But something that the person packing should make the call on. As for the O2's i start pouring in my grains, then toss one or two in...if i have a thrid i just plop it on top.

  • @delta69alpha Thanks so much for your prompt reply. I suspected vacuuming might be overkill when you are using an O2 absorber.

I appreciate your efforts to keep us informed!

  • Very informative video... thanks... one question... as this method is primarily for grains, what technique do you recommened for powders?.... ie., instant potato flakes, flour, sugar, salt... I would think that moisture is a big enemy of these items... do we use the same procedure with dessicants?...again thanks alot for your efforts in producing these videos

  • when you say feed...is this animal feed ?

is it fit for human consumption ?

  • @donnyab No one said feed. They said feed wheat. there is a BIG difference between the two.

  • I have a few questions... I was wondering if food grade diatomaceous earth would kill any bugs in the rice or beans? If so, would you recommend adding some to each mylar bag? Also if the mylar is sealed properly, will a standard bucket lid work that doesn't have a rubber gasket? Thanks in advance!

  • Is the oxidized rice you showed still good to eat? Does it taste different? or cook different? If it's still edible I would just call it brown rice. Good video.

  • I have not been able to find any feed stores in RI who carry wheat. Does anyone out there have any suggestions?

    Jmc

  • @sv906905 - Costco where I live sells wheat. White wheat is best for making bread/baking; red wheat for other recipes. You could also buy it thru a Mormon friend, if you have one.

  • How long will the feed last ???

  • @delta69alpha ok thanks, thats a pretty long shelf life. i'm in KY so, its relatively cool, should store well. Keep up the good work! Make more vids. This is is bein showcased on a couple survival sites!!

  • Good vids.. If I'm using gamma seals how high do you think I can stack pails?

  • Thank you for the videos. Do you freeze your food before storing to kill bugs?

  • can you use a hair straightener for this instead of a iron or clamp like your using?

  • what is the approximate shelf life of these buckets?

  • @dickmimic 10-30 years. How you store and pack plays into its longevity.

  • Firstly greart vids :) question for you how bout storing say smaller 1-2 kg packs bought from store of rice , oats and similar foods? in Aus were i live its hard to get the large buckets and airtight bags you use. so would smaler bags of rice kept in buckets as you do work as well for maybe shorter time spanns?

  • Thank you for the video, it was very helpful!

  • Great info! Thanks for this video!!!

  • is there any concern over gases emitted and trapped in the mylar bag when it is heat sealed? I'm no expert but I do know melting/heating plastic often releases poisonous fumes.

  • @manofskill your not melting the plastic ,so there should be no reason to worry.

  • does anyone know if you can store pasta this way?

  • @stanzibritovsky pasta will outlast any dry food dude just store it like he said and youl be eating macaroni when 2012 comes around lol

  • @stanzibritovsky

yes, everything stores well in mylar, you can even leave it in the original packing then just fill the bag/bucket with packets. All the best.

  • Enjoyed your videos. Interesting.. Thx

  • Enjoyed All 3 Videos On Food Prep,

    One Problem

Camera Person Was Very Annoying [ Clicking sounds] l Throughout The Videos.

  • @MegaAlfie007 thanks.

we had no tripod at the time, filmed the whole packing series in one take. The clicking is the zoom controls and when ever you moved.

  • Thanks for the response delta69alpha. Well, I have my HDPE 2 buckets, lids, Mylar, and 2000cc oxygen absorbers. I was wondering what kind of food you recommend storing in this manner besides rice, beans and the feed you showed. Would Oatmeal be a good candidate? What would be a good resource to look up this? Thank you.

  • @12UltraMk Hey ultra, did you ever find a resource for kinds of foods best stored in this manner? if so drop me a text, thanks.

  • @aboutsoul19

    Ask again in 15 years.

  • How long is the food good for when you seal it the way you do?

  • Can you use a hair straightening iron to seal the bags or is it worth the money to buy a clam shell sealer?

  • @12UltraMk They ca be used. I have only heard of a few issues on the thicker mylars. I use a clothing iron. We have a movie showing how to use one to seal your mylars. D69

  • @TheCrackerbob deep deep south east ...of "idaho"......native to those areas as well...... but sorry we dont sound like the cast from king of the hill ;p we have a film that explains where we are ;)

  • Are the mylar bags with O2 absorbers better for LTS than vacuum sealed "plastic" bags with absorbers? Thanks for the videos.

  • @CHARGERDON55 yes they are. They are not as pourous as plastic bags and keep most of the light out. Air,light and heat will take the most out of your LTS foods. Using mylar cuts that loss down dramatically. D69

  • For those of you who are into R/C Airplanes, A 'Monokote'/Heat Iron works great for sealing as well. They already have Teflon on them and are design to work against heat shrink plastic. you can pick them up for around $20 at local hobby store... Carry on guys and thanks for putting out the vids.

  • I've only started prepping and this series has by far helped me the most. It's hard for me to understand how to this is done from reading on different survival boards. It is very nice to be able to visually see how it's done.

  • I bet a woman's hair straightening iron would work in a pinch!

  • Thanks.

  • Can you use this process for sugar, baking powder/soda, yeast, salt, and flour?

  • @MrSeanhoyt yes you can. yeast i would rotate out every year or more.

  • What about ditomaceous earth?

Some companies are using this product.

  • @UnoRaza

Please list any MAJOR /WELL known food company that is using it in packing their LTS food items. I have already contacted many of the MAJOR sellers of LTS food items about this and none use it. Almost all have gone to mylar with o2 abosrbers in buckets or #10 cans with o2's.

  • @delta69alpha

It KILLS insects, internal parasites, is non-toxic, and dirt cheap.

Surely these properties deserve mention regardless of what major corporations do.

Do their customers even care about bugs processed in their food?

  • @UnoRaza again what major LTS food packers use it? You said some companies do, i am curious as to which ones you say do. Since all of the ones major ones i have contacted do not. I am fully aware of FOOD grade DE's use's and what it does to insects.

  • @UnoRaza What? You cannot find dito?

    Meant diatomaceous earth!

  • I am new to this and I am just starting to store food. I live in the NE. I just purchased a fancy dehydrator and vacuum sealer. I do have a bunch of those buckets/lids from Home Depot. I would like to learn more about those bags and packets. Where can I purchase them, from you?

  • @nld1960 You can purchase the mylar bags and abosrbers from many online vendors. Sorbent systems for example and many others. We do not sell any products as we are not a vendor.

  • Just opened up a 50lb bag i bot in town 4 just 25% of what i paid online a few days ago! It was difficult to find any foreign matter,a few kernels of corn,a little chaf, certainly nothing thatd scare me (like a tarantula) nothing really! Im thanking the Lord Jesus for this and thank you folks too.Tommorrow im loading up!

  • I just found 4 feedstores in town that carry both wheat and whole corn,6 that carry whole corn Cheap! And thats after i had searched everywhere and had even run an add in my local newspaper for a week trying to find some (zero response) I had even called a locl farmer who had to have known. He saoid he had bales but was certain i wouldnt be interested.Bales 1000lbs $100

  • Some of my questions have been answered from reading all posts on these 3 threads.Lids can be siliconed unless you want to remove them and re-use them. You can suck air out of both but it isnt essential (i gather)...pushing it out is enough(as demonstrated.Still id like his opinion on mixing the bean and rice types mixed in different bags all in the same barrel cause then U get smorgasbord when you open it later without having to open many barrels.

  • what about it??? Why are you not sucking the extra oxygen out of the Mylar bag b4 sealing it?

    Thanks for all yr insights.

You act like a veteran Thank you for sharing with the rest of us .

  • I bought aprox 20 canisters of oatmeal and am needing to know if it would be wisest to open the canisters, pour them into Mylar bags and seal them in buckets or just leave them be? I apologize for the bombardment of questions...i am truly on "quest" and i think ive found the man who can "rattle off" the correct answers right "off the tip[ of his tongue.Youll have a better thread for it!

    thanx

  • Ive bought many varieties of beans, white rice and barley in 1 lb plastic bags at the .99c stores and id like to slightly cut the bags so they dont hold oxygen then pack them into 5 gallon buckets with oxygen absorbers (and possibly some diatomaceous earth) then seal them in mylar bags (double bagged?) and put siliconed lids on them.Would that work-out or would bags give too much air spaces.?

  • Does it hurt to use xtra absorbers? Are other edible grains besides wheat kernels or berries available at feed stores?I searched diligently for the lowest cost wheat on the net...never heard about feed stores till after i bought! A secret. And my county is top 5 grower in Calif. The s/h doubled my cost! Ive read all posts.

  • I need to stack mine to the ceiling or i just wont have the room. Are there lids thatl handle it?I bot buckets at Home depot.Lids are thin and dont have rubber ring,I figured id silicone the ring or buy other lids.I have better used lids thatv been cut...i figured siliconing might do the trick.

  • What do you typically pay pe rLb for wheat at a feed store and can i add Diatomaceous earth to it without ruining taste if its dirty?

  • I bought many Mylar bags but bought the thinner ones. Can i use 2 per can instead of returning them?

  • I notice you never vacuum suck air or oxygen out of the bag or the container...isnt that necessary?Containers ive ordered look as though air was sucked out.

  • do you really need the mylar bag? I am wanting to seal up some rice and stuff and thought the air/water tight lid on the bucket would be good enough. is the mylar a necessity?

  • for LTS yes. It is needed IMHO.

  • Is there a reason why you didn't put oxygen absorbers in your bucket??

  • Theres 1500-2000cc in each on of those buckets. If i recall we had one guy dumping them in,another 2 filling, one sealing, and 2 carrying them out. Production line style.

  • Where would you store all these food once they are sealed ?? We do not have any storage space. No garage, no basement, no attic, no outdoor building. Just three bed room two bath kitchen dining living room space and that's it.

  • Some of us at PAW live in small areas. I can tell you that 12 buckets use's up just over 12 sq ft, thats 4ft by 3 ft. of floor space. Only stacked 2 high.

  • couple of questions:

    1. would vacuum sealing be a good option?

    2. if i store rice, will i get bugs and such? how can i avoid this.

    Cheers

  • You could vac seal but some say it is hit and miss.

2- packing correctly and in a timely manner after food is purchased is key to limiting bug issues.

  • Great video but my question is can I stored dog food the same way? My dog is kinda my first alert system for intruders/thieves.

  • Gamma seal lids work really well too. You can re-close and open them without a bucket opener.

  • @rshighfill where can I get them ? :-)

  • beprepared.C0M is where I've been getting them recently..

  • they're a screw on lid with rubber gaskets..

  • Hi again;

People say that I should work more or get a better job, but I would rather live a poorer, more simple, but for me a more sustainable life, less relient on money. In a disaster money can quickly become useless.

    Glenn

  • Hi;

Thank you for your advice and hints. While I am not a survivalist, I do (now) preach about living poor and storing food for the lean times.

I would like to get to a point where I would have at least 2 years of food (and seed) stored. Last summer very little grew and the harvest was bad. I only got12 beans from the three plants that survived, and not a single Sunflower produced seeds, and the dehydrated tomatoes from 6 plants only filled one mason jar.

    Glenn

  • Thanks Dave. Very helpful. Can bugs get into the Mylar bags once put inside the 5 gallon buckets? It seems like nothing could get in there!

  • Hello, Thanks for the video!

We starting our first food storage, and this is soo helpful. I ran into a problem, however.

When we went to steal the mylar bags, we used an iron. However, when I layed the extra part of the bag into the 5 gallon buckets after they were sealed, I heard a little air escaping. Is this a problem?

(I bought them from Wendy Mae's Simpler Living as you had suggested, so they are high quality bags.)

    Any suggestions? Thanks again.

  • @sgtssstutter Let me try to understand- you sealed the bag completely, then when you put the bag inside the bucket you heard an air rush? Not sure I understand what your asking. "Dave in Idaho"

  • Thanks for the response, Dave. We actually figured it out. I just used another bag. It was a bad bag. All is well now. Thanks again!

  • @sgtssstutter Glad to hear it!

    Robert aka "Dave in Idaho"

  • why are u storing food for "Long term"

  • @jaideepbs Because LIFE happens. Ever be out of work for six months? Cause the gubmint isn't going to take care of you.

  • just got fired 2 days before christmas, bad econimy and im eating my food storage now. so yes, for the most part, natatural desaster or finantial desaster, food still has to be eaten. :)

  • I am from South Carolina

  • This what we all need to learn because time is tough and we need to store deer and can goods and such.Great vid man no doubt i will pass this vids on.

  • Very informative. Thanks

  • can you suggest a grain mill or other ways of living off this wheat?

  • we have 2 movies that show different grain mills and how to use them.

    D69A

  • lol smaller men :P greeat vids by the way, really clear and will save u money. i didnt know that we could packag it the same way companies do...coool

  • A local feed store has seed wheat that I bought to put up. I made sure that it was not treated before packaging, even though they say that they treat the plants for bugs in the field. Do you have any suggestions for wheat information resources? Thanks.

  • Excellent advice and info. Thank you.

Are you going to put anymore videos on YouTube? They would be most welcome.

  • Yes we will have movies out. I know its been a month or more. Check out survivalreport's channel here for more long term survival films.

  • Thank you for the information about milk and cheese prepacked vs DIY! I have been pricing milk and was wondering what is the best way to go since I only have 2 boxes left.

  • For hydroscopic foods, would you recommend including silicon packets, such as those packaged in prescription bottles, to minimize moisture?

  • No. If you feel the need to use dessicants they need to be FOOD GRADE dessicants. The stuff you get in shoes, furniture, etc. is not food grade.

  • These are so great! thanks so much. Probably saving lives by your info.

  • just eat people and weeds

  • but the weeds will taste nasty

  • Is it possible to store pasta like this?

  • Yes it is .

  • first off i have to say thank you for taking the time to produce these videos. they are very helpfull. i have several questions to ask.

    1) do you have list of foods that you can store this way?

    2) do you have a webpage where it would be easier to discuss these things?

I have a lot of questions about food storage that I think you will be able to help me out with. Thanks again for the great videos!!

  • Survival report with a dot and a NET after it, go under the button titled FOOD STORAGE, this will get you started very inexpensively.

  • @bowlersp

Very good questions, I am also wondering about this as well.

  • @xkleachx survivalandpreparedness(dot)com is where you can go to discuss not only how to pack but, what, and why and how long it last.

  • Are you aware that part 1 and 2 is no longer able to be seen ?

  • They are up and working just fine as of today? 1-3 and the results. More than likely browser issues.

  • how about Vacuum sealing rice in the plastic bag rolls? will you run into problems with bugs and air getting to it? I was going to store it in the buckets after I vacuum pack it. I can't afford the mylar bags and absorber's right now. Thanks

  • Delta69alpha ---- I would like to know if I can vacuum seal my grains and then put them into mylar as well.

  • You could but the mylar and o2 absorbers will do it just the same. Same you some cost of vac seal bags and electric. What your asking to do is double packing more or less. If your willing to do that and feel safer that way by all means do so.

  • Thank for the reply and for taking the time to make your videos here on youtube. They are appreciated!

  • usplastics is a good inexpensive source for lids & buckets as well.

  • Thanks for the videos. You answered just about all the questions I had as watching; however you mentioned "paint" cans and wondered if you meant bucket. I put up 100lbs of wheat flour last year in unused heavy paint buckets from Home Depot. The lids have a optional spout (?) which of course I didn't breach. Before folks gasp...this flour was direct from a wheat farm and in heavy sealed 10lb plastic bagging. Any info on using such a lid with that clear spout without mylar for rice/beans?

  • It is now getting warm here in the south and I would like to know if it is too late to put up wheat. I don't want any bugs. Love your videos....Thanks

  • Do it pretty soon here, buy it and pack it in the same day or close to that if you can. Folks that live up north won't understand this comment so to avoid a foolish reply from someone- we have MAJOR bug problems in the south with the heat. As it gets later into the spring bugs become worse. This gentleman lives in the south so he understands the problem :) Good luck! "Dave in Idaho"

  • Hi, great videos guys. I have been thinking about long term storage for a while now and appreciate your info and experience. Have you done any tests on the viability of the whole grains after 10-15 years? I would like to use sprouts as part of my long term strategy and would like to get some real life info on how long I could expect seeds to be sproutable using the mylar/oxy absorber techniques you show.

    Thanks, Paul

  • Any seed will suffer from decreased germination as time goes by, even grains. The best way to stay current is to grow some grains every year and maintain a current seed stock. Look at our video titled "Our Daily Bread" for more on this.

  • I've heard that you should freeze rice 2-3 times to kill the bugs and critters that live in them. Doesn't this create humidity or moisture in the package/rice when it thaws and refreezes?

  • From the test that we have done it does not create a large amount of humidity inside either zip locks, Tupperware or the orignal bags. At least according to a hydrometer.

As to freezing we have a movie that shows and puts the theory to the test. It can kills bugs if done correctly. But is not practical for large bulk amounts in my opinion.

    Bob

  • Hi many thanks for all the info in your clips I live in Ireland and its nearly impossible to get equipment here. Thank god for ebay lol. Keep up the good work

  • More info on that green bagged stuff please. :) Whole grain? Any other grains you suggest? Where to buy etc. Thanks..great vids.

  • 5:13 lol @ "smaller men" :D

  • Wouldn't it be better to store it in small packs?

They way you have it you break the seal on 20 pounds of grain each time can you use 20 pounds of grain before it starts to spoil after 15 years in storage? I would think storing it in 1-2 pound packs would protect the supply longer.

  • This is something you can do. But as we said once open the grains will not just rot. If you are using these grains after 15 yrs simply use, snap the lid back on and keep using. If during an actual event that forces you to use them it still will not rot. The buckets on avg only hold 30-40 lbs. Even a 50/50 split rice/beans inone bucket at 1 lb a day for one person is only 30 days per bucket!!!! Add family, friends etc that bucket will be gone long before it has a chance to spoil!

    Bob

  • how do bugs get into the buckets if the buckets are sealed and the stuff is in mylar? just wondering

  • eggs lain on the grains. Either in the field or in the processing plant. A little know fact is that there are fda approved amounts of mold and bug parts for most fresh foods. The bug eggs survive processing, and hatch. 6 months later, You open a tub malt o meal and find baby weevils. You open a bucket of wheat 5 years later, and you find an ecosystem. That's one reason for the o2 absorbers. Even bugs need to breathe.

  • Correct. To get the best product 10 years in the future, you can't cut corners on packing.

  • Thanks for this! I needed the knowledge!

  • you guys sound like us. we had a food coop in the mid 90's but started drawing to much attention to ourselves when a 18 wheeler would come ever week from ozark or walton ect. we shut the coop down and moved LOL. love the vids, like to see how others do things

  • The semi truck pulling up is kind of a giveaway isn't it? :)

  • Where do I buy Mylar bags & Oxygen Absorbers?

  • Try shop simpler living also there is a . and a com in that. Youtube evidently doesn't like links.

  • go to your Walmart Bakery to get food grade buckets and lids...FOR FREE!

Walmarts are everywhere and they just throw these buckets out anyway....

  • ok i 2 more..when i do this, how do i store the buckets? is there a temp that i wanna stay away from? also can i put too many of the oxygen bags into the buckets?

  • i have a question and maybe its stupid, but if i do this with rice will that keep bugs out of it too? and how long does rice last if its done like this?

  • Thanks for the info. Your very smart about this stuff.

  • How do I PUIRFY Water..

  • 05:30 - you can also put a wood block down and hammer that, to avoid marring the lid.

  • We usually use a rubber mallet which leaves NO marks. Not sure where that was on this particular packing session???? A regular hammer leaves a slight mark but nothing that compromises the bucket lids. Great point, thank you!

  • Great instructional video

What method do you use to prepare and eat the grain? Also, Argon gas used for wire welding is inert, and heavier than air. If you fill the bucket with this after putting the rice and grain it will keep for many years.

  • Do properly sealed 5 gallon buckets keep dry when under water (meaning floods, not stored in the ocean)?

  • When hammering the top you could prevent damage by having a piece of wood between the lid and the metal hammer.

  • What forum are you on?

  • I think I'm the only one from these guys that are on any forums, dunno for sure.

  • Thanks, but I was asking to find out what forum is good for learning about this type of info?

  • what is the brand of the feed grain and sourse ?

  • Yea, what type of feed is that? And where do you buy it in such bulk?

  • I am hoping with the o2 absorbers and mylar bags the grits will be ok. I will try to let you know how it works out.

Sorry to hear your grits didnt work well.

  • For a small family, would it be better to store in 1 gal. mylar bags with the oxygen absorbers rather than the larger bags? I would worry that food in the larger bags may go bad or get bugs in it before used up once opened. Btw, great videos!

  • Whole grains are not going to just go away or go "Pooof" once you open the mylar. If you need just a little bit, cut the mylar NEAR THE TOP (so you can reuse it), scoop what you need out, then roll the cut part back onto itself and put the lid back on tightly. Follow these directions and your whole grains will still be good years later. Problem is with "powdered" type items and that's the main reason you should buy them pre-packed in #10 cans commercially- milk, dehydrated eggs, cheese, etc.

  • Im not sure how to take the "Whole grains are not going to just go away or go "Pooof" once you open the mylar comment. But if you do not have extra oxygen Absorbers handy for every time the larg mylar bag is opened it seems to me its possible the oxygen Absorbers did not need to be used in the first place (just wasted money spent on them). I packed my grains in gallon size bags with oxygen Absorbers in hopes the grain will last longer (so not to open more than I need to to prevent waste)

  • OK the point was that your food is not going to start going back the minute the mylar is cut open. I understand the "1 gallon baggie" rationale but when you get into serious quantities this means more packing costs, more waste and a lot more time spent in packing. No reason you couldn't pack in mylars with no 02 absorbers- look at our "LTS RESULTS" videos on this channel and you'll see results of 17 year old food packed w/o absorbers. The absorbers are not a "waste", the point of the post-cont

  • was for the folks that thought some ominous countdown clock started as soon as the mylar was cut open- it does not work that way. You do NOT have to re seal the mylar every time you open it. Now if you KNOW you won't get into it again for 6 months or more, "I" would re-seal it. If it made you feel good to throw another absorber in- that's up to you. Personally I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE that it is not necessary with your whole grains, legumes, etc. Been storing food since 1986. IMO the only good

  • Thanks for the reply. I have only been storing for a little over 2 yrs. Im still learning. Im not worried about the grains going bad, just getting bugs in it after opening. Also, if its possible to store grains, legumes, etc without o2 absorbers, I would rather save my money to spend on more mylar bags. And yes, the cans are great(powdered eggs, milk, cheese, potatoes). I dont have as many cans(variety)as I would like to have yet but im getting there :) I will go watch that video.thanks again

  • I use a phrase in the videos- "stepping over a dollar to pick up a dime" - it was in reference to people cutting corners on technique to save a couple bucks. I don't personally think it's a smart move. But I'm not going to BS you, I KNOW whole grains will store long term without o2 absorbers and mylars, cause I did it that way as a kid. Keeping the lid tight after opening the mylar will go a long way towards keeping bugs out. Every one we have got bugs in after opening was because cont-

  • someone did not put the lid on TIGHTLY after they opened it. I personally would still use the 02 absorbers. Why? Because if your putting up a real quantity, you really don't know for sure WHEN you are going to start using it. A lot of folks tout "short term" storage, then complain when they find 5 year old cans of grocery store food in there house they have to pitch out. Pack for long term storage and in either 3 years or 10 it will still be good- less money wasted that way. Good luck!

  • Thanks. You have been very helpful.I will continue using the o2 absorbers with my mylar. Most of my grains are stored in the gal. size bags (works well for us). I stored quick grits in mylar and 02 absorbers a few weeks ago. I left the grits in their orginal bag then placed in the mylar. Not sure how thats going to work out. I probably should have poured them directly into the mylar(not sure why I didnt).Next I am going to try cookies LOL!

  • One more question. We use the blocks of velveeta cheese that you can purchase off the shelf un-refrigerated (refrigerate after opening). Have you ever tried storing it? If so, how did you do it and did it work? Thanks again and I appreciate your time and efforts! I just wish I had started storing earlier. I believe hard times are much closer than most realize.

  • Good luck. Keep a good eye on the grits. I packed some years ago WITHOUT o2 absorbers but with bay leaves as everyone believes they repel bugs- THEY DON'T! Ask me how I know...

  • I'm not shocked by the grain at all. Ive trekked all over the us, sometimes under conditions that warrant more time in the field than food able to carry. This often means that i need to eat what ever is growing. Ive never studied or carried an out door survival guide. its easy enough to study what animals eat in the area and nothing says you cant eat grass and hay. rabbits do all the time. however, my families pallet seems delicate and we are now rotating can stock.
