Wow... Comparing me to a religious fanatic. Thats a first for me.
What in my statement is not truthful? The bombs over hiroshima and nagasaki saved lives. History shows that the nukes were what ended it, and that as was expected the Japanese was planning for a long drawn out war on Japans main island. They were training civilians, even women and children, down to 7 years old, to fight with home made spears and knives. Thats what we know. Expected casualties of such a invasion: 5 mil?

@gerdler86 Actually, you're mistaken. The Japanese High Command was already discussing terms of surrender days before the first A-bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. There are 3 reasons why the US needed to drop it. First, the USSR, which was already poised to sweep through Manchuria, Korea and into Northwestern Japan the following month. The US needed to stop that. Two, to force the creation of a new world order led by the US, instead of a multi-polar one, bigger sticks = power. Three, research.
@RoniCMaster No, the Japanese government was planning on making a stand. In fact, -after- the bombs were dropped, there was an attempted coup by part of the government who were opposed to surrender. They took the Imperial Palace and placed the Emperor under house arrest for wanting to surrender and tried to kill those who also wanted to surrender. Obviously, they failed, but every man woman and child in Japan was being trained to fight to the last drop of blood.
@Altanese That's the official historical stand of the United States government. I wouldn't take it as absolute fact considering that it is coming from the very people who drop the 2 bombs. They, of course, would want to make it as justifiable as possible. I know I would have done the same if I were them. Looking at it from the geopolitical map at the time though, it makes much more sense that the A-bomb was used as a means to increase America's sphere of influence in the region. cont.~
~cont. The US wasn't always the dominant hegemon in the Far East and SEA. That title goes to Imperial Russia and the various Western European colonial powers. Towards the end of WW2, the USSR sought to regain control of the Far East which had largely been under Russia's sphere of influence in the 19th century while Western colonial powers wanted to return to SEA. The US wouldn't have it. To extend its hegemony into the region, it must displace these various powers. cont.~
~cont. To do so, you need the A-bomb. Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun. The bigger the gun, the bigger the political power one can wield. With the A-bomb, a weapon capable of flattening an entire city in a few seconds, something that no other powers at the time possessed, this hegemony can be achieved. The question is how to make the other powers understand that. The A-bomb cannot be dropped on the Germans, the initial target, because they have already surrendered. cont.~
~cont. So, they will have to go for Japan. Of course, it's harder to justify since it was Europe, not Asia, that was the vocal point of the war for the American public. So, they need to make justifications for it, pointing to obviously overinflated claims that a million American GIs will die if they were to invade the home islands while refusing to accept the Japanese request for discussion on terms of surrender with statements that they will only accept "unconditional surrender". cont.~
~cont. The Japanese wanted to surrender quickly because they too know the Soviets are coming and they would much prefer occupation under the US than under the USSR. The only condition the Japanese would adamantly insist upon is that the Imperial family be allowed to live. Something which the Americans did anyway after the Japanese agreed to an unconditional surrender. In retrospect, it makes it pretty much pointless to have dropped the 2 bombs since the end result for Japan cont.~
~cont. is pretty much the same. However, throw in the geopolitical consequences and you can see the picture. The US have control over Japan, a strategic location which serves as a foothold from which they could extend their influence into the Far East and SEA. They even got USSR to give them half of Korea and the European colonial powers out SEA which is replaced by various governments that are now under the dictate of the US through its various institutions. All in all, the dropping of cont.~
~cont. the A-bombs have yielded great political concessions for the US and is thus a smart move on the part of the US administration. The spheres of influence it has gained has given it plenty of economic benefits as well with its access to natural resources and foreign markets now greater than ever before. These fueled American prosperity for at least the next half century. Of course, irrational peoples of the world wouldn't like the real reasons, so give them another story. Ignorance is bliss.
@RoniCMaster You are reading way too much into this, and what I've discussed is historical fact. There WAS, in actuality, a coup. This isn't a rumor, this isn't a conspiracy, this is a cold hard fact with evidence to back it up. These people DID want to fight on to the last man, and dropping the bombs had nothing to do with political or economic schemes by 'imperialists'. Keeping the Emperor, by the way, was only one of many conditions Japan offered for surrender.
@RoniCMaster There was an island, I can't remember it's name, but most of the civilians died by suicide or fighting when the Americans landed. They were only a few hundred, Japan itself had millions. Oh, and you want to talk imperialism? Talk about the Rape of Nanking, or the Bataan Death March, or the Burma-Siam Railway, or the comfort women, or any number of other atrocities committed by Japan.
@Altanese it's called "banzai cliff" on Saipan island. you can still find documentary videos showing civilians jumping into the sea to commit suicide instead of surrendering. it was taped by USMC.
I love Lord of War. My only complaint is you didn't really see Uri's rise to where he got to in the arms dealing business. He went from selling an uzi to some guy to shipping boatloads of AK47s within like 3 scenes.
@stuntmanuk sooooo your saying your brother got shot, your family hates you, and you make millions of dollars selling weapons illegally?and supposedly your stupid enough to state this on the internet.bro, way to be a terrible liar
Be as self-righteous as you want, you have no idea what your stance on guns will be 5, 10, 20 years from now, because let me tell you... You change, we all do.
Holy shit this movie is great ! Makes me look at things alot different now, in fact ... i might get into business myself now ... there's money to be made out there ...not just guns ... The borders with the islamic world are not far from my door ... these people are forbidden to consume alcohol ... The russians drink more alcohol than anyone on this planet I might become a freelancer booze-smuggler from russia with love ... cheers muzzies !!! Isn't religious law great !!
Arguably the saddest ending to a film out there. We can't credit this one to pure fiction and sleep at night. Blind idealism might not make much of a difference in this world, but it isn't nearly as costly as cynicism and apathy. That's LoW in a nutshell for me.
@Gordonfbs First: Get some financing. Second: Go talk to your local warlord or despot and ask them what they need in arms. Third: Order arms from weapons manufacturer who doesn't mind dealing under the table: Fourth: Make sure order is delivered: Five: Enjoy the profits (Providing you don't have a conscience). Besides this world if full of rat-maggot infested McDonalds chains anyways.. .: )
@msudreaming Yes, Texas is making serious budget cuts, but they're doing a hiring freeze. They aren't about to let go of all of the veterens. And as I have been with TDCJ for four and a half years, I can call myself a veteren.
@Cerberusballs That's great for you, especially before the holidays. Michigan made budget cuts couple of years ago and laid off lots of people including correction officers.
As good as the ending scene may be, the movie does definitely not go down as one of my favourites for the reasons I wrote in the clip info.
If you like bad-ass dealer stories with a sad twist in the end, go and watch "Blow", "Casino", "American History X" or maybe just as well "Memento" or "City of God".
@Karakas4 i must disagree with the city of god part . i'm brazilian and dislike it bcoz it wasn't true or based in a real story. thats not like that in here in Riowhich is where i live. Thats why i think warlord is superior to that movie it got a true story of an arms dealer. in portuguese we have the expression ''Pra ingles ver'' which means that its made for european and american ppl to judge and think that brazil is a warzone filled with black ppl with Ak 47 just like africa.
@Karakas4 If you want to see two really emotionally strong movies about pushing illegal goods: watch the danish movie "Pusher" and the Swedish movie "Snabba Cash" - "Fast Cash". They are both subtitled thanks to their dvd-releases.
Warning, both movies and "Pusher" expecially has some very violent scenes you typically don't see on american screens because they would get the NC-17 rating.
@Karakas4 the strength of this film is the message its nt just about entertainment we are a sad planet full of greedy homicidal monkeys and if we dont change were going to become extinct
Love that ending. The images of the streets covered in discarded casings, any number of which could have taken a life, they remind me of similar photographs from the bosnian conflict.
The character in this movie is based off the lives of 3 different gun runners all spliced into one to make the character look badass. So yer either dumb or lying.
"The film ends by pointing out that the worlds largest suppliers of arms: US, UK, France, Russia, and China are also the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, hinting at the irony that those in charge of ensuring peace in the world are the same as those who sell the tools which fuel the conflicts"
I agree that is what the movie points out. But the fact is that the better weapons you have in fighting the war, the less cruel it becomes. This is evident if you look at the US war record the last 100 years. 2nd world war ending with 2 nukes that kill less people than the fire bombings of the major cities did. It is evident that weapons are necessary for peace.
@Bragzz It's the other way around isn't it? Weapons exist because they are needed. We create weapons because we need to kill other people. If we don't need to kill, we wouldn't need weapons.
@ScottishAlkie1 Peace and war are in the hand of the powerful. They deal the promise of a better life in one hand and death and destruction with the other.
Oppenheimer, when he quoted the Hindu scripture of Vishnu "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds" couldn't have been more right.
Thanks, Karakas4, for your contribution.

I've see a version of this movie witch at the end (just before the credits) they wrote something like that:
"there are a lot of new arms dealer around the world each day, but the biggest arms dealer are the governments of:
China,
France,
Russian Federation,
United Kingdom and
The United States of America……..they are also The five permanent members of the UNITED NATIONS (UN) Security Council

"The film ends by pointing out that the worlds largest suppliers of arms: US, UK, France, Russia, and China are also the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, hinting at the irony that those in charge of ensuring peace in the world are the same as those who sell the tools which fuel the conflicts"

Hi,
I desparately tried to see the last statement you kept on all the youtube clips of this movie but nothing shows the concluding remarks????
Google why cry about china while i cant figure this out in the UK.
Good to here your remarks!

@gerdler86 Weapons are needed, because they exist. If they didn't exist, we wouldn't need them.,
