Great Britain is a nation with 60 million people and we had 42 gun deaths last year including suicides. The U.S. has 5 times our population but has 35,000+ gun deaths including 3500 children each year. This is why the vast majority of people support gun control in the UK.

What most people outside the UK fail to realise is that not much actually happened because of the handgun ban. The vast majority of people didn't have a gun anyway so it didn't affect them. There was practically no one with a gun before the ban and it really didn't affect Britain much at all. The majority of the people who cared were right wing newspapers and the US media.
If the time comes when the US government tries to take our weapons I think we are going to and should overthrow the government even if that means using deadly force, by taking away our weapons you take away our freedom.... there's not enough shootings in Britain for the police to be armed. the police only kill a handful of people with guns a year, and most years no police officers get murdered with guns.

So if someone drowns at the beach, does that mean people never get to step foot in the ocean again? That's just not practical and not a good justification to violating rights given to us. Schools need to monitor who comes in/out. That instance was probably another set up to revoke rights...generally is.

@shaunyboy1000 Maybe the intent is different, but what I meant to illustrate is that because something can be used for bad, doesn't mean it should be banned. Generally in cities that allow their people to carry weapons, since everyone has a gun, no one's really in a hurry to get trigger happy, knowing they'll quickly be matched with someone else that may have a bigger gun. That's how it is in Texas. Maybe in Britain you weren't afforded rights to guns, but we were here in America.

I understand that owning a gun may make people feel safer as they are able to defend themselves however guns being legalized would increase crime, i.e armed robberies. @FaithLessTQWH I think the reason that so few people were concerned about handguns being banned was because guns have never been a huge part of British culture (Although it is becoming that way.) The problem that I have now, with the ban on knives, is that I have NO way whatsoever to defend myself, and the justice system here seems to favour the attacker rather than the victim. Personally, I will always carry some kind of weapon. I'd rather be imprisoned than dead.
@FaithLessTQWH Best part about TX is that gun laws are VERY loose. Only downside is that we dont have open carry laws. Still, concealed carry is just as good. My overall favorite part is that we are okay will Class III weapons/Federal weapons. First thing I plan to get in a few when I go legal is to get a silencer for my Makarov. Nothing better than carrying a KGB weapon, while having a silencer with it, and legally carrying both concealed!

On the black market something small like a Browning Buckmark would go for £800 to £1,200, around $1,250 to $1,850. Firearms like shotguns and 'some' bolt action rifles can be owned with a good reason for owning that caliber, brand, make and amount of ammo (Almost fascism).

In Japan a local politician where I lived was attack by a katana weilding man. In the UK an MP was attacked with a katana. In both places stabbings were VERY common.

People always try to use the "why are there fewer X" as an argument. Its simple, population. The US has a much larger population than the UK. (roughly 5 times more) So generally speaking the UK will have a lower rate of many things compared to the US.
US has more land but I still think it has the UK beat in the density part too, in some respect. Simply because most of the population isn't spread out throughout the land. The US has several cities that match or exceeds the UK's largest most populous one.
My point still stands. The UK is a fraction of the US in number of people and guns. So ofcourse the US will have more. If the UK was the size of the US then they would be equal because its been a proven fact that gun control only hinders the law biding and criminals can and will use guns. Well boys aren't generally allowed firearms. You need to be over 18 - even in your country. Shotguns and hunting rifles are legal to buy if you apply for the necessary licence (they don't give em to kids tho)

I am a Brit living in France. Here guns are everywhere and its way safer to live here than in the UK. Legitimate citizens are allowed guns other than military spec.

There were also more armed police in Britain in the 1930's when police used to carry pistols known as comforters on night duty. In the 1960's there were more armed police than now, with police able to sign guns out of police stations were now have totally professional armed officers, a much better policy.

Not true. Gun crime has gone up because now there are a load more stupid gun related laws for people to break. Possession of an unlicensed firearm carries a mandatory 5 years in jail. However gun murders and violent crime commited with guns has continued to fall at the same rate that they were falling before the gun legislation.
That is not true at all. Have you ever heard of a media "spin-doctor?" 99% of the "shock horror" stories about guns in the newspapers are actually what I call "paper crimes" i.e. someones gun lisence expired or that person didn't have a lisence or a gun found abandoned etc. I actually know few police officers and they say serious gun crimes really are much lower than 10+ years ago.
But thefts and all that other stuff have gone up. Guns will never go away completely, since there will always be someone who wants one, and people will find ways to smuggle them into Britain. We had had lowest number of gun deaths for many years - before the 1988 legistlation and also before the 1997 legislation. The UK gun laws have been a flop. They have made no difference at all to the number of gun deaths.
Unfortunately that's not true. If you want to use statistics they need to be real ones, not invented ones (it's sort of a rule). Alternatively try using the Home Office report as a source instead of the Daily Mail.

What most people outside the UK fail to realise is that not much actually happened because of the handgun ban. The vast majority of people didn't have a gun anyway so it didn't affect them. There was practically no one with a gun before the ban and it really didn't affect Britain much at all. The majority of the people who cared were right wing newspapers and the US media.

Let's look at all of the Nations where the people don't have weapons and the police/Military do. Egypt, Assyria, China, Sudan, North Korea, Algeria, Yemen, Ethiopia. How's that working for the people there? They're getting bulldozed with bullets & starved to death while their leaders live like fat cats! To be frank, where I live the people are better at policing themselves than the actual policemen. The main criminal element around these parts don't give a shit for regulations and laws and gleefully vandalise, steal and murder simply because their victims cannot and are not allowed to fight back - guns or no guns - and if they do then the law comes down on the victim.
If anything, guns are detterents and the will to use them in the right circumstances is important too.

@mufc4527 If you read back you will see that i disagree with any gun use but if there are more guns on the streets then the police need to be able to protect them selves. Also the police armed respons units are taking in loads of weapons from raids potentially stopping future killings.

@shaunyboy1000 Because of some lone nut shooting up a school doesn't mean we all suffer the effects of gun bans. That's like saying, because someone chocked on water and died, no one gets water.
So if someone drowns at the beach, does that mean people never get to step foot in the ocean again? That's just not practical and not a good justification to violating rights given to us. Schools need to monitor who comes in/out. That instance was probably another set up to revoke rights...generally is.

Bottom line the streets are safer without guns. How is it better to walk outside knowing that everyone is carrying a gun. @shaunyboy1000 Maybe the intent is different, but what I meant to illustrate is that because something can be used for bad, doesn't mean it should be banned. Generally in cities that allow their people to carry weapons, since everyone has a gun, no one's really in a hurry to get trigger happy, knowing they'll quickly be matched with someone else that may have a bigger gun. That's how it is in Texas. Maybe in Britain you weren't afforded rights to guns, but we were here in America.

I understand that owning a gun may make people feel safer as they are able to defend themselves however guns being legalized would increase crime, i.e armed robberies. @FaithLessTQWH I think the reason that so few people were concerned about handguns being banned was because guns have never been a huge part of British culture (Although it is becoming that way.) The problem that I have now, with the ban on knives, is that I have NO way whatsoever to defend myself, and the justice system here seems to favour the attacker rather than the victim. Personally, I will always carry some kind of weapon. I'd rather be imprisoned than dead.

@FaithLessTQWH Best part about TX is that gun laws are VERY loose. Only downside is that we dont have open carry laws. Still, concealed carry is just as good. My overall favorite part is that we are okay will Class III weapons/Federal weapons. First thing I plan to get in a few when I go legal is to get a silencer for my Makarov. Nothing better than carrying a KGB weapon, while having a silencer with it, and legally carrying both concealed!
I pity the UK, and should look at V For Vendetta.

@BlueRidgeMarine Every person who held a firearm in the UK had every firearm they held registered (including shotguns) and the ammunition they used had to be accounted for with a good reason for firing it before ordering more. On the black market something small like a Browning Buckmark would go for £800 to £1,200, around $1,250 to $1,850. Firearms like shotguns and 'some' bolt action rifles can be owned with a good reason for owning that caliber, brand, make and amount of ammo (Almost fascism).

I also find it funny that pple think Gun Control means lower violent crime. Nothing is further from the truth. I've lived in Japan and the UK with less guns but still violent crime still happens. In Japan a local politician where I lived was attack by a katana weilding man. In the UK an MP was attacked with a katana. In both places stabbings were VERY common.

That why the U.S needs to open more gun range shops so people can train and know how to use them. if someone has a bigger gun you get a bigger gun banning guns will not stop crimnals from getting guns. People always try to use the "why are there fewer X" as an argument. Its simple, population. The US has a much larger population than the UK. (roughly 5 times more) So generally speaking the UK will have a lower rate of many things compared to the US.

The US may have more people, but it also has far more land.
The population density of the UK is six times higher than the US (so there are far more people per square mile in the UK).
Normally, crime in a country is proportional its population density.

There were 650 murders in the UK last year and 16,000 in the US. As you said, there are 5x more people in the US than the UK.
So correcting for population differences:
650 x 5 = 3250
3,250 is a lot lower than 16,000.

Well boys aren't generally allowed firearms. You need to be over 18 - even in your country. Shotguns and hunting rifles are legal to buy if you apply for the necessary licence (they don't give em to kids tho)

Not true at all. It's dependent on a number of things:
criminal convictions
history of depression or mental illness
gun storage facilities (the cops come and check)
reason for owning weapon - self defence is not a valid reason in this country.

I had this discussion with him, none of these things apply. The UK now has a soaring crime rate which i posted above and the reason is gun control. Recently our violent crime dropped like crazy here and no one has come to the conclusion that is so simple. We have had a run on ppl buying guns since obama has been in office.

I am a Brit living in France. Here guns are everywhere and its way safer to live here than in the UK. Legitimate citizens are allowed guns other than military spec.
Why.
Because anyone who comes onto my property to cause trouble knows he will be blown away.
The default setting in France is that you are assumed to be responsible and decent people can defend themselves.
In the UK the decent people are disarmed and the criminals can still get guns.

There were also more armed police in Britain in the 1930's when police used to carry pistols known as comforters on night duty. In the 1960's there were more armed police than now, with police able to sign guns out of police stations were now have totally professional armed officers, a much better policy.

Since when did we see people hunt foxes with handguns. Shotguns and hunting are legal. As for handguns they were banned after the snowdrop campaign, following the massacre at Dunblane. It should be noted that Britain has had no similar massacres since.

Not true. Gun crime has gone up because now there are a load more stupid gun related laws for people to break. Possession of an unlicensed firearm carries a mandatory 5 years in jail. However gun murders and violent crime commited with guns has continued to fall at the same rate that they were falling before the gun legislation.

That is not true at all. Have you ever heard of a media "spin-doctor?" 99% of the "shock horror" stories about guns in the newspapers are actually what I call "paper crimes" i.e. someones gun lisence expired or that person didn't have a lisence or a gun found abandoned etc. I actually know few police officers and they say serious gun crimes really are much lower than 10+ years ago.

But thefts and all that other stuff have gone up. Guns will never go away completely, since there will always be someone who wants one, and people will find ways to smuggle them into Britain. The British government thought they could completely eliminated gun crime, but really, all they have done is made people a lot more vunerable and they have also created another item that will become much more profitable in the black market; making the illegal smuggling buisness much more active.

No, that was never the claim.
Some crimes have gone up, some have gone down, but both at the same rates as before the gun ban. The legislation has had almost no effect. Shotguns and hunting rifles are still legal to own, the only difference is the almost total ban on handguns, which very few people owned anyway.

There is a misunderstanding here. As a Brit I can tell you that march wasnt about gun laws. It was about fox hunting. No guns in fox hunting - just posh rich people on horseback chasing foxes with a pack of dogs who rip the fox apart. It was banned because of cruelty - no guns involved. Faithless, I'm not anti gun but I gotta correct you - fox hunting involves no guns. I'm a self protection instructor trained in firearms myself.

The recent gun legislation in the UK has had no significant effect on violent crime rates and has sent a few people to jail who probably don't deserve to be there.
However...

Violent crime in the Uk is different to the USA. Violent crime is correlated differently. The gun laws in the Uk have been a run away success.

Nationmaster uses the United Nations Survey of Crime Trends which was specifically designed to standardise statistical correlation so yes, you can compare rates between countries, at least for serious crimes.
We had had lowest number of gun deaths for many years - before the 1988 legistlation and also before the 1997 legislation. The UK gun laws have been a flop. They have made no difference at all to the number of gun deaths.

This video is referring to the 1997 Firearms (Amendment No.2) act, which has not had any significant effect on the number of gun deaths in the UK

Unfortunately that's not true. If you want to use statistics they need to be real ones, not invented ones (it's sort of a rule). Alternatively try using the Home Office report as a source instead of the Daily Mail.
The gun murder rate in 2007/2008 was higher that that for 2005/2006.

don't know when the video was made, but its almost certainly from the countryside alliance's protest in the late 1990's (98 or 99) triggered by the introduction of a ban on foxhunting by the incoming Labour government. the protest attracted some 400,000 demonstrators.
it has virtually nothing to do with handguns or gun control
