dernièrement notre chef de choeur accompagnée au piano par notre pianiste préféré a chanté ceci ...pas du gospel certes...mais çà m'a donné l'idée de chercher....et c'est simplement ...du miel .....
The beginning is rough. She gets into it a bit more half-way through. Like others have said, not bad for an opera singer. Keep in mind that Show Boat is from a time when pop music still had a classical tone. Some of the older versions I have heard with original casts had CRAZY vibrato. I found this much more pleasing to the ears. The beginning was just... lifeless. It's too bad she didn't start it the way she finished it!
isn't music all about interpretation??? . I think shes just got a new zealand accent. while i dont love it, shes not "awful". personally i think this song is better when sung with a jazz flavour.
awful. Diction is all around terrible--especially on the words "birds" and "gin." This is a self-indulgent interpretation entirely devoid of artistry. Cheers!
One word sums it up I think...Boring! Nice lady, Dame Kiri, but I found myself falling asleep. Listen to Frances Langford do it. She nails it 100%. Every word is a gem! Frances Langford could do ANYTHING and make it sound like a masterpiece. She was and still is the GREATEST!
Very nice...better than most opera singers...including La Fleming. However, it's interesting that Eileen Farrell remains the only opera singer in history to understand popular singing.
A good version coming from an opera singer... There aren't many opera singers who can pull off pop and Broadway songs beautifully- most often they'd sound like treading on unfamiliar ground. Bravo to Dame Kiri!
Dear damekirilover, I was so lucky I found these wonderful videos... I think most Kirilover would also like to find them, which is not easy as you haven't written her name anywhere... :) thanks for sharing anyway
Her enunciation is a little too uptight for this number. Lovely voice, though (obviously)

@CarloQuinto Agreed. For that matter, the Helen Morgan version from the 1936 movie is superior to this.

she sounds disingenuous, rigid, and creepy. 5 stars, hahah. :)

This was from the "last night of the proms" concert around 1991. I remember she wore that NZ flag dress with the blue and the stars.

Kiri's done a great cross-over from opera. Not too many opera stars are able to do that successfully.
