"Light" meaning "sugarless" might involve making someone lose weight, that must be how they came up with adding "light" to a beverage name when it has an artificial sweetener rather than sugar. "Diet" probably means for someone on a particular diet, and that has the same concept.
"Diet" did not seem to have a positive (healthy) image in the Japanese market population, therefore "light" seems to have been the better choice for the brand.

In Japan, Coke Light was renamed Diet Coke in 1999 and since April 2007 it's called No Calorie Coca-Cola.
