I have 2 questions; why would you say something like that about this man? Since you made such a comment about his music in this video, (which is very soothing), where are your videos of you playing something that you feel is better than this?
I don't know if you only want praise or if you're open to constructive critics. So, I'll give both: Very nice doodling. It sounds beautifully dissonant. Kinda like one of those late Romantic/early 20th century blind french organ composers, but with contemporary voicing. You could stand to read up or take a class on Voice Leading as in some areas your intentions are not clear; though, the overall affect is pleasing. Also, I don't understand the perpetual Leslie switching.
His style is a cultural one in which he is playing what is feels and this style is very popular during talking moments in the black church. Most church organ players are ear players and there is nothing wrong with that. Improv. skills are many time better than readers although it is good to have both. I'd love to hear your style granted that there is no such thing as a perfect musician. We all are different because that's how God planned it.
Thanks for the comments. However, I'm a black musician and understand (i.e., was raised in) the black gospel tradition. I had no intentions of "faulting" this man for playing what's in his heart, but was offering my personal thoughts out of love (which is the whole point of the comment feature on youtube). I stand behind his intentions not being clear in some spots. But we could all stand to fix some of our playing.
Now as far as critics usually don't even compare to the critiqued, I'm glad you classified that as "usually", otherwise it may have sounded like an insult. As far as the improv skills between black untrained musicians and those of people who can read, it's really hard to compare them.
All folk who can read can't improvise, but some of the ones I've seen who can are cold. Lots of times the end up leading bands on TV because they have the best of both worlds. People like Paul Shaffer or the old black guy that used to lead the SNL band on his organ.
However folk in gospel like the late Tommy Whitfield or Rich Smallwood drew inspiration from the written music of some composers and were able to infuse that into their gospel playing and create a sound that people are still trying to mimic.
I do understand all that you've said. Yet scroll throughout youtube in any genre. You have numerous "unsign" artist giving their two cents on others' talent. I point the fact that God has given us all the same talent but is God enough to allow us to use the talent differently. Everone has an audience great or small. So often do we step on others due to our own insecurities. I guess that night I wrote the comment, I was fed up on the insults of fellow brothers and sister of the faith!
....Critics usually don't even compare to the critiqued is some form of the next. This guy is doing things the way his heart is giving it to him. You can't fault him for that
Sounds like you're quoting "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" here and there. The Leslie without the chorus effect on it is great for the meditative "Churchy" sound. Chorus 3 is usually used on those blistering gospel songs :-). Beautifully played coming from one organist to another
You are doing a lot of left hand exercising as my organ reacher taught me. Meaning you are not allowing the leslie to make the sound much different before you swithc bakc and forward
Changing registrations constantly really distracted from your playing. Sorry

Sad of you to make an assumption like that. Being able to read music is a tool not your identity as a musician.
