  • @Akibatai00 So what are the downsides if any? I heard one should only smoke the Japanese tobacco brands like the Koiki that you are using.

  • @TheSocialPlague Why would there be any downside? The only thing is the bowl of a kiseru is small, it is not ideal to smoke western pipe tobacco with it since they will expand due to the heat and try to jump out of the bowl.

  • @Akibatai00

Oh, so I suppose that's why I was told not to smoke anything other than Japanese Tobacco. Hard and expensive to get them in Finland so I thought I'd resort to the pipe tobacco I normally use.

  • What'll happen if I smoke pipe tobacco with Kiseru? Will the bamboo become spoiled?

  • @TheSocialPlague

You mean western pipe tobacco? Of course not~

  • useing a zippo with a pipe is not ideal

  • Just got my kiseru today and smoked it...but I couldn't roll it into a ball. The koiki started to turn into fine dust. Maybe I don't know my own strenght :) Has this ever happen to anybody?

  • It's very cosmopolitan looking, in the same vein as a cigarette holder from the 1920's.

I've flirted with the idea of getting a kiseru to add to my SCA garb, but it'd be a waste as I only smoke hookah. Not fond of tobacco.

  • @silvermoonwolf19

    I smoke a hookah too~

But isn't shisha tobacco too? :D Actually, I know what you mean, pipe tobacco is much less mellow than smoking a hookah. But hey, you can always get a kiseru to use as room decoration~ :D

  • I love my kiseru, it makes me feel so bosslike, because it's 16 inch. :D

  • @spontaneityis

16 inches, wow, that's long~ Where did you get yours?

  • @Akibatai00 My Granpap is japanese, and left it to me when he died. He said he got it in Kyoto. :3 ~

  • That's a very short smoke right ?

  • @Micheltn

    Yes, it doesn't last long.

  • I want a kiseru so badly

  • medwakh .com sells Asian tobacco, as well as a good selection of Kiseru pipes. They are a US Based retail company. I've perchased from them before, veeeery good service.

And yes, they sell Koiki :)

  • Can u do the same video putting ur bare soles in front of the camera while smoking ?

    Thx

  • Why my little roll of tobacco blocks the draft air ??

    Why often shut off ?

  • paha lookin like a boss smoking that kiseru. i love mine, its super long

  • There's something very refined about the kiseru...

  • There -has- to be somewhere in the US online that you can order the tobacco from. Any city with a japan-town or china-town should have at least one smoke shop.

I'd actually really like to get my hands on a kiseru as part of my historical recreation garb...

  • Anyone looking for koiki might try this link, medwakh.com/index.php?option=com_hikashop&ctrl=product&task=show&cid=121&name=koiki-kizami&Itemid=474&category_pathway=16 they're out at the moment that I write this, but I just bought 6 packs from them last week -- they do restock (albeit infrequently and in limited supply of around 50 or so) so check back later if none is there when you click it.

It's definitely worth the patience, Koiki is delicious.

  • @thecommonsmoker420 Well, by the looks of your comment i guess spelling is excluded from the list of things cannabis makes you concentrate on?

  • yo :1 i dunno if you are still looking, but medwakh(dot)com sells koiki, kiseru pipes and other stuff. middle eastern tobaccos mostly, but there is a section for asian pipes and tobaccos. (just bought some today) hope that helps! :p

  • Very nice, I'm having a helluva time finding kiseru in Korea, but I often see local smoking the bamboo pipes. Not sure, but they may be smoking rolling tobacco or shredded cigs (definitely not cannabis).

  • @Seoulsmoke

You should ask the local where they got their pipes.

  • @Akibatai00 PLEASE tell me what is the music u r listening to

  • @Seoulsmoke Sorry, what I meant is that I can't find the kizami-style tobacco, the pipes are everywhere, but mainly as cheap souvenirs.

  • @Seoulsmoke

:D You should ask where they got their traditional tobacco as well~~

  • how typical of everyone to say you should smoke weed!

its fucking shit, a waste of money, and absolutely useless.

not everyone does it, so just get the fuck over it.

anyway, where did you buy the tobacco from? do you knpw if they can still ship to the UK?

  • @DollFacePookie

I go the Koiki and kiseru from a Japanese website. Sadly, it no longer accepts oversea order. You can still get kiseru on ebay, and use it to smoke western tobacco~

  • @DollFacePookie: That's a rather stupid argument really. If marijuana is "fucking shit, a waste of money, and absolutely useless" what does that make tobacco?

  • @PooPoo2U i dont smoke tobacco either, and i think thats a waste of money too. i was asking for where the tobacco came from as my friends do smoke, and would make a nice gift. but thats just my opinion, it doesnt bother me if other people want to smoke, and its not like i go round stopping them. i just found it a bit typical people would want to ruin a traditional item.

moan at me if you want, i just dont like drugs and alcohol, so dont bitch at me for having my own opinion

  • @DollFacePookie: Yea well, I don't know if you noticed but pretty well the entire channel is about using tobacco. If you want to get up on a soapbox and preach against something, do it somewhere else.

  • @DollFacePookie how can weed be more waste of money than tobacco?

  • @thecommonsmoker420 (2) The kiseru was not invented until the arrival of tobacco. I said earlier that its origin was obscure, that meant historians don't know which individual who designed the shape and at which exact year he/she came up with the idea. Scholars know kiseru began to be used by the Japanese as a regional pipe by the mid-17th century, which makes sense, since by that time tobacco and its use is well known to the Japanese, and they had the time to develop their own regional pipe.

  • @thecommonsmoker420 (1) The argument is not rather marijuana is a good plant or not. I don't mind people smoking it, and think the law banning it is stupid. The argument is rather or not the Japanese smoked cannabis before tobacco was introduced to them at the end of the 16th century by European merchants. The answer is no. There existed no archaeological or pictorial evidence to support that claim.

  • @Akibatai00 I too see nothing wrong with cannabis. As a former daily user of it i can say that the high lasts 10 times longer than a tobacco buzz. but because of a new job i have where i might get drug tested i now only smoke tobacco. pluses and minuses for both smokes i'd say.

  • 3:17 cutie

  • what the title of the music ur listening too???

  • Comment removed

  • Hey pardon me but do you know of any Western tobacco that can taste like Kizami? I haven't been able to go back to mainland Japan and Kizami is ridiculously expensive here

  • @Tsudoshi09

You can try RYO American Spirit (Original Blend), it's additive-free, the closest you can get to Koiki. However, unlike koiki which is cut into fine hair, American Spirit is cut into medium shag, so when you put them into the tiny bowl of a kiseru and light them, they will expand due to the heat and try to jump out of the bowl.

  • @Akibatai00 どうもありがとうございます! ......but its sad now....I need a new Kiseru

  • oh and, can i also use western tobacco since its hard to find kizami in europe?

  • @hidoko12 Of course you can, but the bowl of a kiseru is really small, so whatever you smoke is limited by the size of the bowl.

  • hey, I'm thinking of buying one. when dou you empty it in the ashtray? when there is no more smoke coming out?

  • @hidoko12 :D yes, empty it when you see the tobacco has turned into ash~

  • man, you look like you're enjoying that. i don't even smoke and i want to try that.

  • @Urudrim go ahead and do, but only if you are 21 and over (or whatever the legal age is for consuming tobacco in your area)~~ LOL

  • @Akibatai00 i actually wanted to try these ever since discovering the zatoichi movies. but it is impossible to get kizami here :(

  • @Urudrim shred your own tobacco can be an option~~ :D

  • @Akibatai00 that sounds like a good option. do you have any recommendation on what to use?

  • How do you get a hold of new bamboo for your kiseru?? because mine needs a replacement as well

  • The PACT Act is one confusing piece of legislation. It doesn't seem like foreign brands of pipe tobacco have been effected as there have been recent shipments of Samuel Gawith, Dunhill and Peterson. I think Koiki must have been mistakenly identified as ryo cigarette tobacco for its import to be banned under PACT. Either that or the foreign destributer didn't want to deal with the hassle of new customs regulations and stopped supplying the US. Either case wouldn't surprise me.

  • @FakeThomasJefferson The PACT doesn't affect pipe tobacco (thank god), otherwise we have to pay a lot more for buying them online.

  • This is just speculation....Perhaps something like MacBaren's Navy Flake carefully sliced with the grain(rather than rubbed out) would provide enjoyment? A simple single edged razor blade should be able to create petite strands. It'd probably be best to lay the flake on a damp paper towel (to over-hydrate it) as dry flakes crumble quite easily...

    Warmest Regards!

  • @company101

    Thank you for the suggestion~

  • You're welcome! I will post a short video sometime using hemp wick for you =)

  • I might suggest trying hemp wick to light kizami with, you can find at some smoke shops (sometimes have at ones that sell pieces people use for cannabis). The chems from lighters is very noticeable for something so smooth and slow drawn as kiseru. If you want to get the idea of how it taste, you can try all natural beeswax candle too. Other candles will have parabens and plastics, so make sure it is all natural. I would love to try traditional method using hot coal pieces to burn vs flame

  • @AkiraSumida

Ah, you mentioned coal pieces! I do love to try that, it's after all what people in the East used to light their tobacco before the introduction of matches from the West. But where to get that kind of coals? Certainly not the kind we use for BBQ....any suggestion?

  • @Akibatai00 I remember it being a lot denser than say charcoal for bbq. I wasn't sure if the set that LSAndo sells included it or not, all it said was something about accessories. Coal is more useful when you were by a fire, I think thats why they did indoors. Personally I strongly dislike the taste of butane or chemicals on what I smoke, so I try to find methods to avoid using lighters directly. I have an idea but i will have to explain over a few posts, so I apologize in advance.

  • @AkiraSumida What I have generally seen for how they light the coal they usually leave it near next the the fire between uses. I have seen the coal picked up to light kiseru, so it would seem theyre lighting just one side vs using tongs to handle. If you wanted to try this method, I might suggest starting with hookah coals. Cut the coal (usually in discs) in half, keep in mind it can crumble if youre not careful. Get a tea light and a dish or ash try for placing the coal on, foil also works fine

  • @AkiraSumida Light the tea light candle and place on plate. You will of course have to be a bit creative here, but basically let the coal rest on the tea light by leaning it against the side so it touches the flame. Let it sit till you see a portion begin to glow orange. Usually I suggest allowing coal to to coal for a few seconds, letting the orange glow dim a bit before hitting kiseru. Of course its up to you to figure out whats most enjoyable. I hope this helps in some way =)

  • @AkiraSumida

So you suggested hookah coals, that's a good idea~ I read the rest of your posts, I will have to give your method a try~~ Thank you~~ :D

  • @Akibatai00 As a fellow pipe smoker I understand your frustration at not being able to obtain a favorite blend. I know it probably won't be the same, but you might want to look into Five Brothers tobacco. Its a natural burley blend from the US, but it looks like it has the same finely cut consistency of koiki.

  • @Akibatai00 yeah any smoke shops or some convenience stores have coals for hookahs you could break up one of those into smaller bits?

  • I found a website called medwakh.com that sells Kizami Koiki and Kiseru, I'm thinking about purchasing a kiseru from there but there so expensive haha hope this helps Ganbate! ^.^

  • cool!

  • You are absoluty delightful. I very much enjoy your videos. Please, keep up the good work.

  • Very cool! I am an American who has fallen in love with pipe smoking for the last several years, (black cavendish in a corn cob is my favorite and yes I look like Popeye) but I'm buying a Kiseru for a lady friend of mine (Chinese, but she digs the look the Japanese pipe has) I was wondering if there is a filter in a Kiseru and what tobacco you would recommend for her.

  • @grendeljack

There's no filter for kiseru, you smoke it as it is from the mouth piece~

As for the tobacco, one should smoke Koiki with it, but since you can't order any more of it from the US and have it ship to you from Japan, you can opt for other pipe tobacco or RYO.

  • where can an american get their hands on a kiseru? even if i cant get the tobacco i'd love to own one

  • @djikasu

    I am selling one~

    shop.ebay.com/fontfillmore/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25

  • i want one o_o

  • The PACT act only affects cigarettes, RYO tobacco and smokeless tobacco it does not affect pipe tobacco

  • @SmokingEssy7887 It is actually also affecting tobacco that is imported from outside the united states. Since the law passed I can not purchase pipe tobacco from my purveyor in England. Something to do with the Credit Card companies and the new laws. But I am sure as with everything a back door will open as the government just closed this one.

  • man i dip skoal and all of that i wish i had sum snuff good vid

  • You need to put some weed on it

  • @pppoe

Tobacco is referred to as the divine weed, so yeah, I am smoking exactly what you recommend~ :D

  • very cool, how long does one packed kiseru last? About 10 minutes or so?

  • @StatuesBleedingGreen

I smoke the tobacco in real time, so it's not hard to figure that out

  • Is it about the same strength as a medwakh? I want to try it I think I'd like it. (I love your music by the way!)

  • @JahWillLove

It's just pure tobacco, so go figure~ :D

  • @Akibatai00 Didn't japanese smoke marijuana in these pipes as well?

  • @mrtampenski

NO, it's strictly for tobacco. BTW, kiseru is assoicated with old people because they are the only ones who use it mostly. Another time when kiseru is seen is in those period dramas on TV; in short, kiseru has nothing to do with marijuana.

  • @Akibatai00 Hate to butt in, but Kiseru were originally designed specifically for cannabis and opium. Both had been available in Japan since at least 500 AD, and it was only after the Europeans introduced tobacco that the Japanese began to smoke tobacco out of it (tobacco eventually got more popular than weed because it was viewed as an 'exotic' substance)

Anyway, Hope you continue to enjoy your tobaccos!

  • @witchdokturr

500 AD?? I'd love to see the evidence that support your claim. Even historains say the origins of the kiseru are obscure, how can you be so certain that the kiseru was designed specifically for cannabis and opium?

  • the doubt came to me too, so I've found this:

"Cannabis has grown in Japan since the Neolithic Jomon period (10,000 to 300 BC). The term "Jomon" itself means "pattern of ropes", which were certainly made of cannabis hemp. These ancient people lived a civilized, comfortable existence, and used cannabis for weaving clothing and basket making, as well as using the seeds as a food source. What isn't clear however, is when and how the seeds arrived in Japan."

It's very intresting... the article here

  • @tantanukineiri

    the link please~

  • @mrtampenski japanese people might not smoke it with marijuana but i have before and it smoked pretty nice.

  • Comment removed

  • is this legal in the united states

  • @mrfeelgoodful

since when smoking tobacco is not legal in the US?

  • i noticed the manga on your shelf, what series' do you read

  • nice zippo, mine is ace of spades

  • Hey, I really enjoyed your video. I recently got my first kiseru, and was wondering if you have to keep your kizami in a moist (humidified) place? If so, how do you do it?

    Thank you. Keep on smoking.

  • @takethislife

I don't bother with it. If you want to, you can place a small slice of apple or orange into the paper bag. Just don't leave it in there for too long for it will get moldy~

  • i see you still have a Kiseru up on Ebay but no koiki tobacco, what're the chances of you having any again? i'd but the pipe but what's the point if i'm going to have to make an overseas order to get the tobacco anyways

  • How long does the Koiki last in the pipe? Like how long on average does it take to smoke the pipe?

  • @209cgrant

I am smoking the koiki in real time in the video, am I not?

  • @Akibatai00 My bad bit of a retarded quesiton :)

  • i wonder if there is any service online that ships kiseru to singapore.

the one i got locally is a full brass long pipe, and too fancy to use in public. >_<

  • I love it! I also love to watch people smoking. I'm not into cigarettes or cigars myself, but i will get a pipe later this summer when i turn 18. I am unsure as to what kind i should buy. What do you suggest? Oh, and i love your coffee cup. Haha.

  • @boshukonii Check out pipes.org and aspipes.org. alt.smokers.pipes on Usenet is also good for this kind of question. My advice, try a corncob and some Captain Black to see if you like it.

  • Comment removed

  • is this disgaea music

  • @brennan808

no, it's from the anime UTENA

  • Maybe the foul taste you mentioned can be removed by washing out the bamboo part with strong liquor. That's what's done with western-style pipes that give a sour taste.

  • @frotz661

    Thank you for the tips~

  • Hi, i was on your ebay site but didnt actually see anything for sale.. could it be that you're sold out :/? was interested in buying a kiseru or well something else.. looking for a nice sake set adn some masks to :)

  • can you use any sort of tobacco in it?

  • @pacers10490

Of course you can smoke any tobacco in it, although the amount is restricted due to the size of the bowl~

  • how long of a smoke is that?

  • @RSof08

I smoked it in real time in the video, didn't I? :D

  • Can you supply the tobacco as well as the Pipes on Ebay? I imagine there might be restrictions on that :-((

  • @raindog951

sorry, I have only one box of that tobacco left and it's already opened. I do sell kiseru on ebay, check it out.

  • @Akibatai00 That's a nice pipe on Ebay! Keep putting them on there, when I've got the cash I'll check out your page and bid on one :-)

  • Have you ever tried a midwakh, I use glass myself and not for tobacco.

  • @EroYojimbo

    sorry, tobacco only for me

  • are u boy or girl?

  • What is the length of this pipe?

  • @itachi1303

wow, you asked the question three times!! LOL

The pipe I used in the video is 5.5 inches.

  • @Akibatai00

Oh, sorry, when I had posted the first and second time, it didnt show.

  • @itachi1303

No need to apologize, I just found it funny~ :D

  • i like your music... nice music you otoko, onna ? i'm from peru NYA !!!

  • you should inhale it..

  • no, I don't think so.

  • @sotapieru

That would be unwise my friend.

  • Even in "western" pipes you don't inhale, like with cigars you "taste" the smoke with your mouth

  • Very interesting stuff , wild looking . Thanks for the video . :-) God bless , michael

  • I forgot you sell them!!! Dang!

  • just curious, each ball gives around how many puffs?

or rather, how long can i smoke on it till it burns out? XD

  • That's pretty cool!

  • do you know where i can find some koiki?

  • I heard that you shouldn't hit the ashtray with the kiseru, because it's "yakuza" style. Is this true?

  • I have heard the same too. However, from all the vintage kiseru that I have seen, most of them do have markings below the bowl that suggest they were frequently hit on the ashtray. So I guess people just did whatever that was convenient for them~ XD

  • Oh, so that explains it. Still, if I manage to get the chance of smoking one, I'm definitely not going to hit the ashtray, just out of fear :)

  • Your cute :)

  • Is the pipe that you sell extendable?

  • Sadly, no.

  • Nice choice of music

  • Hi my friend! I also got a KISERU, check out my vids, you'll find it ;) Your lucky to have some JT tobacco. I need some xD

    Peace.

  • Intresting !

  • cool!

  • How would pipe tobacco burn in a kiseru?

  • same way I heard, just roll in a ball.

  • yup, like itachi1303 said, just roll it into a ball (gently) and insert it into the bowl~

  • Sorry I missed your comment...

It's the same with how you'd smoke it in a briar pipe, but in much less smaller amount.

  • とても良いです!

  • oh my, not only do you know Chinese, but Japanese as well! Amazing~

  • quite interesting,,,ive seen many japanies and chines documentary where they do smoke this type of pipe and i always wondered how long it last for a relatively small bowl well question is answered thanks for u,,again thnx for posting

    cheers

    ahmad

  • glad I helped~~
