Thanks - the birthday seems a long way back now as you don't know for certain if you will be going up until a few hours before takeoff, so had to wait several months. The original booking was aborted because of snow!
Happy 60th. Nice footage. Would have liked to see the landing, perhaps 61st. I always wanted to try ballooning. I fly for a living and was near a cell at 15,000 over NewYork and a empty garbage bag flew by. I thought if a cell can pickup an garbage bag and spit it out at 15,000 feet what would happen to a balloon. So if I do going ballooning with will be on a clr day ;)
Interesting comment. It was not possible to video the landing from inside the craft, as we had to assume the takeoff and landing position in the basket, and were asked to put cameras and camcorders away (read blog - link in info section). Maybe next time, 'phone cam' will catch the landing!
oh, cell is a reference to a thunderstorm. On weather radar it looks like a blob/cell. - I didn't not know about 'bracing' during landing in a balloon, it makes sense, plus probably cuts down on legal issues (not having a camera rolling) when the guy messes up and drags you across the ground for a couple 100 yards ;)
The balloon falls naturally when the hot air cools, when the pilot was sure of the landing, he opened a vent at the last minute so that the hot air escaped quickly to stop us leapfrogging on landing.
Wow! How exciting! The scenery was beautiful. And the animals were so cute when they looked so small. That must have been one of the best birthday gifts ever! I loved it!
Glad you enjoyed that one Meg, the animals seemed to get spooked when we were at low altitude, but I noticed that when we were dirctly overhead, they seemed to calm down as they could no longer see us!
Fascinating!! I have to admit feeling just a little dizzy watching some of the scenes. How many people were in the gondola on your flight? Is it true that the ride can be so smooth that at times you feel no motion whatsoever? Thanks to your bravery, Frank, maybe I'll look into trying this in the Napa Valley in California.
Hi Brent, yes it's true, there is no sense of movement (except up and down), because there are no apparent forces working against you - no acceleration, no braking, no cornering. It's just like floating, that's why it feels so safe.
There were 16 passengers and 1 pilot. Obviously he could not steer the craft, but he could turn it round so that he was always looking in the direction the balloon was going.
There is an eiry quitness up there, even when we were over the busy town of Corby, but at low altitude, we found ourselves in a (shouted) conversation with some people on the ground.
Thanks Steve, there was so much more to the journey than waht I could include in a ten minute video, that's why there is a link to the accompanying blog in the 'info' section.
They used to launch hot air balloons from the schoolyard around the corner, but I think they must have stopped, as I haven't seen any in ages.. :) Glad you enjoyed your flight.. :)
We were all encouraged to take an active part in getting the balloon airborne, then packing it all away afterwards. By the time we got down, and back to our cars, it was well and truly dark and I didn't get to bed until midnight! Yes, you could say I enjoyed it!
Yeah that's a challenge if you like!! I have heard of Britain's Canals and their beauty and ingenuity, I can't go myself since I'm in the States but maybe you and your wife can!!
I was in a balloon's basket for a tethered flight for cancer survivors many years ago. I only got to go as far up as the top floor of the hospital. This makes me want to take a non-tethered flight. It looks like so much fun!
It really was an incredible ride! We were beginning to think that we might not get down though, as it took three attempts at landing after the first two proved unsuitable.
lovely video ! even make my legs wobble ! but balloons and planes not for me ! bit of a ground man !

** THIS VIDEO LOOKS GREAT VIEWED WITH THE HIGH QUALITY OPTION **
I'm so glad that you enjoyed it.
I would be far too scared to go up that high in a nylon tent and wicker basket! It did seem really peaceful - what an experience.

Experiences like that are rare Sue, and it sounds like you enjoyed watching almost as much as I did flying!
Did you mean that it was a surprise that you bothered to check back, or that you weren't expecting to see much?
gumleyboy 3 years ago
It was a surprise because we thought you weren't making any more videos!

What a wonderfull experience that must have been. I hope you had a great birthday and all the things that go with it :)
