Jimi Wins, Eruption is pretty free flowing.. Bold as Love is like jazz in the way that you gotta keep up with the chords and improvise based on chord tones.. and the changes go pretty quick. If you try to stay with it.. I can improvise something similar to eruption but i play so much jimi and i can't improvise on bold as love.. or at least not for long and actually sound good...
EVH gets short changed. People only judge him by Eruption. He has a long list of great songs that have lasted over time and he is a great rhythm player. Hendrix is great too but he has the advantage that he died in his prime and fans never saw his skills fade and get surpassed as has happened to EVH. Having owned most VH and JH albums I would take EVH, but I won't say anything bad about JH. He's also a great player and songwriter who has stood the test of time.
Eruption is heavily inspired by Hendrix's Woodstock Improvisation. Almost to the point of being a ripoff.
Now, I seen countless YouTube teenage tapper shredders do Eruption to the tee. But I've yet to see anyone get inside of a song like "Little Wing" the way Jimi does. Therein lies the difference.
id agree with that i saw some old footage from the filmore and hendrix was doing an early form of guitar tapping but ritchie blackmore was also doing that in 69 ive seen footage from deep purple rithcie invented sweep picking anyway without hendrix and blackmore van halen wouldnt have been as good as he was
@EPI6fingers ? They are both very very different guitarists. Ask Jimi to play metal ( it wasn't around during hendrix's era) and a solo in x scale Eddie would do it better, ask Eddie to play blues and surreal rock, Hendrix would do it better. It depends
Guitar player international some years back named Edward van halen and jimi Hendrix the two most important and influential guitarist of all time! How very true this is.
they both very skilled guitarists . hendrix is undoubtebly has more soul in his guitar playing than any other guitarists . eddie van halen is solo dedicated guitarists. at that time i believe he would have deserved to be fastest guitarists . he invented tapping . hes the king of it . any1 that can tap faster than him . good for them . but he invented it without it they couldnt have become faster than him
@ichirakudreamer Eddie didn't invent tapping its a very old technique that goes way back before van halen, country guitarists were doing it before him.He just made it mainstream.
Jimi opened up a whole world for the guitar. Eddie explored it. Jimi makes his guitar moan, Eddie gives his guitar an orgasm. I personally favor EVH but without Jimi there would be no EVH
But he doesn't have an ounce of the soul that Jimi had. Just listen to how groovy and fucking dream-like Hendrix was. He was almost biblical in his playing. A prophet of a musician.
@mattwins15 noooo way is jimi hendrix even close as a guitarist to eddie van halen 34 years ago eddie van halen sent hendrix to the back seat! theres no one like eddie van halen and there will never be any one like eddie van halen EVER!!!
Depends on what you're into. Pure Technique or Deep Soul. No matter what you dig Jimi put the balls in rock guitar. Everybody who came after will always be under that shadow. Eddie's playing is very clean & technical while Jimi's playing is lyrical & poetic. The were both a product of there times.Something for everybody.
If I'm a young Robert Plant and i have these two auditioning in front of me, my pick would be Eddie Van Halen easily. Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Robin Trower and Jimi Hendrix all have that same sound whereas Eddie Van Halen's sound is so, well I can't describe it .
@rodd7 I can shit. Eddie van halen tone is horrendus asnd his solos are wankey and unmelodic there just noise with no feeling. Some one like page or hendrix is better because they have emotion and songwriting skills compare jump to stairway to heaven and although the solo in eruption is amazing the actual song is shite
@rodd7 There's a reason Clapton and SRV sounded like Hendrix...and EVH would never have picked up a guitar with his skinny white arms if it weren't for Hendrix's massive, black... influence.
HOLY SHIT!!! Did anyone else hear what I'm hearing?! Jimi's solo is RIDICULOUS! The way he makes his guitar CRY, the SOUL and FEELING is overwhelming! Eddie's solo is just some neo-classical bullshit, so he fucking plays his guitar like a keyboard, so fucking what? Only stupid pre-teen kids think that shit is impressive. Jimi's solo is MUSIC, not bullshit wanking noise that means nothing. You hear Jimi's solo and it SAYS SOMETHING. The emotions in it are UNDENIABLE. Man this isn't even a contest
Jimi wins by a fucking mile. Van Halen is a joke. Jimi has so much soul and brilliance in his work. beautifully crafted genius. Van Halen is a pathetic shredder who isn't a musician at all. He doesn't create music, he creates noise to show off how many notes he can play in 15 seconds
Let's keep in my mind that this is a "Solo Vs. Solo" and Eddie fucking brought sound to space with no oxygen. But Jimi has an amazing understanding of rhythm and other qualities of Sound and Music. Both truly did though, bring a new meaning to Rock. Though i give Eddie my applause.
What does it matter? Jimi didn't care just let van halen have the win Jimi is much bigger than any competition. Eddie makes you smile because of the skill and speed Jimi makes you smile because he touches your soul, just listen with more than your ears and you'll feel it.
Both fundamentally changed the guitar forever. Jimi Hendrix is unequivocally the best guitarist, but "Eruption" is the best solo ever. If we're going on solos, it's Van Halen. If we're going on guitarist skill, it's Hendrix. There is no answer.
Jimi playing this Bold as Love instrumental is absolutely sublime there is so much of him in that recording. I forgot that there is ALOT of Hendrix material out there that people really should check out.
i honestly dont think music should be compared. guitarists aren't battleing one another, they are playing what they feel. theres no reason anyone should be arguing about who is better, just listen.
Tough to call as IMO there are different measures of a good solo. Technical difficulty & speed are one measure but also originality and whether the solo makes sense - ie. does it fit if it is part of a song (e.g. many Beatles solos can be played by a novice, but are really well thought out) or If its a solo piece, is it dynamic and does it take the listener on a ride? Anyhow, my preference is for Eddie's solo because it was so original for the time and hangs together well as one piece.
Ok,if you compare the techniques,Eddie is far much better...he invented the tapping! That's one of the greatest things ever in guitar...all my respect for jimi, but i think eddie is better.
van halen won...eruption just beats bold as love...it just does

still, i think jimi hendrix is better!
