hey frnd can u plzzz tel me in step by step..i hav windows 7 stater.with 2gb ram 250hdd(only 2 drives c & d)..so should i need to creat a partition?how?
2nd-do i need anythg more than the ubuntu os disk?i mean any extra software to install ubutu??plz reply
@Softheart15 For the absolute easiest install just download and run this. Just follow the steps and you should be just fine. ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer
first dont download daemon tools, download either power iso or virtual clone drive, second my computer is asking me for a disk when i try to run wubi, does anyone have any ideas on how to stop this?
@honky12341 There's nothing wrong with daemon tools and poweriso is not a free option. Actually you don't need to download any of them, ever. Just extract all the files from the iso with winrar and then run wubi. In fact that's what I would advise doing for your problem. If that doesn't work and it still asks for a disk then just download the standalone wubi program and let it download the OS for you. If you ask me though a true dual boot is a way better solution and it's not that hard to do.
@dantpatenaude sorry clicked reply at the wrong spot see reply to honky12341, i forgot to add that i even inserted a blank disc into the drive to burn wubi onto, but its not giviing me the option of burning wubi onto a disc, i cant even burn the program onto the disc, but i havnt tried downloading any software to do this, should i i have windows 7
@honky12341 well ive already tried downloading wubi as a standalone, but it still asks for disc when i try to open it, and about daemon tools, its spyware, not the bad kind mind you, but spyware non-the-less
man, there are thousands of viruses for linux too (including ubuntu). Viruses for linux are from the oldest days. We even study linux viruses at computer science university.
@TeamGozarStar There are viruses for everything. However, since the majority of people use Windows that means the majority of the viruses will be targeting Windows machines. It's a lot easier to infect people that way. This is the reason why we say there aren't any viruses for Linux. It's not in a literal sense, it's because your chances of being targeted are slim.
If you have an extra partition you can install ubuntu to it. If you have windows 7 and no extra partition then you can make one with partitioning software.
Yep, just create a new partition then install ubuntu to that partition. It doesn't need to be all that big either. Maybe around 5-10 gigs. What I do is keep all of my videos and music in my windows install, then just mount that partition in Ubuntu so I can access my files without having them saved twice.
Yes wubi is slightly slower and does lack hibernation. You can do a real dual boot install but it takes a bit more effort. If you don't already have a second partition you need to set one up. You can do this by using partitioning tools. I used to use g-parted.
this is my problem as a vista x64 user. My partition in computer says i can only parittion 1GB (when i have over 75gb). I saw guides online that said to defragment and use disk clean up etc. Ok i did that, deleted a bunch of programs and uninstalled alot of crap etc etc and guess what... now it says i have 0mb to parition. WTF!!!! Vista is the king of WTF moments.
Don't get me started on HP support, Windows DVD Maker not working, and so much other stuff. This looks like a fix for me.
my HP disk recovery maker thing wont even burn past the second DVD it just auto quits. i've tried countless times it wasted a perfectly good DVD. I'm not even guna bother calling HP for recov disks they've always had the crappiest and rudest cust suport(wich have never helped me at all). HP shud just tell u to use GOOGLE for help cuz thats all that ever helped me google(dot)com and utube :/
I'm guna try this as im 2 scared to use the Linux Mint partitioning software for obvious reasons!
For partitioning I use G-parted. As for buning disks you may want to use a different program. You can also insall using Wubi, that way you won't need to partition or burn a disk. wubi-installer(dot)org
I downloaded ubuntu and it wants me to install usuing the cd so i put it on the cd with roxio do i just leave the cd in and restart and go from their or do i have to partition or something. I dont want to damge windows id like to use it once in a while.
Just insert the cd when your in Windows and install that way. If you want to do a true dual boot you would need to partition if you don't already have an extra partition.
when I installed it using wubi , it installed just fine but when I restart and choose ubuntu my laptop went blank for long time...then I tried to installed it again with vmware 6.5 it work and even updated but when I restart the vmware the screen went blank again
With a full install your disk speeds are slightly faster. Plus some people like having dedicated partitions (sections of the hard drive) dedicated to each OS.
I already said no it won't hurt windows. I was just explaining that you can completely remove it so there is no possible way it could hurt your install. And I have no idea what you mean by memory. If you're talking about ram then no, no extra ram is used because only on OS runs at a time. If you're talking about hard drive space, of course it will take up space. Around 10Gb. But it will definately not damage your computer or Windows in any way.
No, that is not true. All you have to do to completely remove Ubuntu is go to add and remove programs and uninstall it. After that there will be nothing left of Ubuntu.
Well if that's the case you already have it installed. If your install doesn't work simply go to control panel and uninstall the program, restart, then try using wubi.
installation in windows completed and waited for 15 min. nothing happen only black screen. Is right to choose first vista then restart again then choose ubuntu?
Not sure what could be causing this. How long did you give your laptop before you shut it off. Sometimes it can take a while for the installation to finish.
The only thing I could suggest is using a CRT monitor (the big kind) if you have one around. Or just install from Windows and see if that works. If it doesn't (but it should) then just uninstall Ubuntu.
Are you using an lcd monitor (the flat ones) because sometimes that happens to me on certain live cd's. Other than that I'm not sure what could be causing it.
Glad to hear it worked for you. As for your phone. If you have your data cable you should be able to plug it in, if you have bluetooth you can use that. I'm not really sure. I don't have a Nokia.
Oh!! Thanks a lot... That was very informative... Ans I Installed Ubuntu in Windows.. :-)
if u dont mind, i have one more doubt!!!
this is bit complicated.. I think u can understand this..
The RESOLUTION in Vista is 1280*800 and it looks fine..But in Ubuntu, its only 1024*768. I have installed NVIDIA drivers in Ubuntu(9.04) also but still its saying that is not compatible and so on..
Is there anyway to adjust Resolution using Command or somethin? it wil be of great help if u reply.. :-) Thanx..
If you already installed your graphics card drivers then you should be able to go to System>Preferences>Screen Resolution and change it from there. Not sure if you have tried this though. If you do have problems installing the graphics drivers I have another video that explains the poper way to install them. It's called How to enable Ubuntu's Special Effects. mine never works whenever i do this, it downloads, lets me chose the OS at startup, but it never completely finishes the installation on Ubuntu, even today, i left it to load all day while i was at schoo, it just froze at copying files 31%
only thing was to unplug my computer and then i went 2 xp, which crashed and gave me the BSOD
I then have to boot into safemode and remove the ubuntu before xp can work properly. This has happened more than 3 times.
Weird. Have you tried reinstalling XP and then installing Ubuntu inside windows? If you are unable to install using Wubi you could always make a seperate partition and install Ubuntu on that if you wanted.
