This is practically making me cry, because this whole story makes so much sense! I mean, everyone does wreckless things when they're underestimated or misunderstood. I can relate, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
P.S. I love this video and think there should be one for "Defying Gravity"
I can't call Elphaba WWOTW any more. She wasn't evil in Wicked, and it's just so sad. Plus, she loses her little sister, and her best friend encourages a stupid little girl to steal her sister's shoes and kill Elphaba herself. And her boyfriend accompanies the stupid little girl on her journey, although I'm not denying Fiyero did love Elphaba, and they were together in the end. I'm not denying Glinda was a good friend, but she did encourage Dorothy to wear Nessa's shoes.
@jazzykid1: Fiyero is only reincarnated as the Scarecrow in the musical. In the book, he dies and stays dead. Proof comes from when Elphaba sets the Scarecrow alite and he doesn't become the spirit of her dead lover. In the novel, Elphie does become wickedly crazy near the end of her life, just like the rest of her broken family. It is in her madness that she tries to wrench the shoes from Dorothy, even frightening her at parts. Yet, her death was an accident on Dorothy's part.
After reading Wicked it just seemed strange calling Elphaba "The Wicked Witch of the West" but she was always my favorite character, and I always found Dorothy a little annoying, even naive.
One thing I've always wondered... you know who the gaurds had green skin too? There was never any explanation for that, not in the book "Wicked" or even the broadway play.
Also, the guards are joyful when she dies, suggesting that the witch never was 'misunderstood' because of her green skin, because there were other green people in Oz.
But meh, "Wicked" and "Wizard of Oz" are 2 different things, so it really doesn't matter, does it?
XD Heck in Wicked there weren't even guards, XD just Nanny and Liir! But I haven't read the Wizard of Oz, so perhaps they weren't colored in the book, and that's just something they did in the movie, having no way of knowing that someone would ever write the story of the Wicked Witch. ;)
In the book Wizard of Oz, there weren't any guards either, but there were Winkies (kind've like Munchkins, only they lived in the west) who were forced to serve under the witch, who wore a dress of black & yellow & had an eyepatch b/c she had only 1 good eye. Plus her skin was normal, too, & she died from the water b/c her bodily fluids had already dried up, rendering her vulnerable to outside fluids. But yeah, they didn't predict Wicked, who would have? :)
Actually I read about that in an annotated version of Wizard of Oz, it explained how when the molecules in your body lose their natural fluids, when outside water makes contact with them, they melt. Or at least, I'm *recalling* what it said, that was sort of the gist of it, its been awhile since I read it. :)
okay... when they wrote wicked, they totally should've remembered the references that were neccesary to go along with the wizard of oz. for example, in TWoO, elphie has enslaved all of winkie country, yet in wicked, fiyero is a winkie PRINCE. why would she enslave the country of the man that she loved?? i don't get that one...
Wicked isnt a prequal; it is an interpritation of TWoO, in the same way that the musical is an interpritation of the book. Ergo, it doesn't have to straight go along with TWoO. Besides, if you read wicked, you can see that Elphaba's actions in the vinkus could be seen as her ensalving the country when the wizards own brand of propaganda was applied; she certainly domineered over Fiyero's family while she stayed with them.
@becca3182: Not really. She just kept to herself up on Kiamo Ko & only came down from her infamous tower when she was needed by Fiyero, Glinda, and the Animals of Oz.
@Trumagmur: But in both Wicked (novel) and the original Baum tale, Nick Chopper is the Tin Man, whereas the musical had Boq become him (which contradicts Dorothy's visit in the original tale, since she stayed in Boq's house). Or...perhaps, Boq became the Tin Man AFTER Dorothy *and* Elphie (who visited him also in the Wicked book) had left, in which case, that was a very short transformation! XD
As much as i have to admit that the lady who played the wicked witch of the west in the wizard of oz is absolutly amazing and i think that she made the wicked witch of the west come to life!! But anyway, i love this video, great job!!
Hmm this Wicked Witch of the west isn't pretty at all =S (Probably on purpose) But this is very different to Wicked, this is because Idina is beautiful! That's why I couldn't understand why the Elphaba in Wicked thought herself as ugly? Idina was too pretty for her character to be believed as ugly, it's the same for Kerry Ellis, and most other Elphaba's in Wicked.
She may have been Idina Menzel, and thus beautiful, but she was also green. Most of the insecurity seemed to stem from that little defect.
Frankly, even though Idina Menzel is beautiful even in full body paint...if I was green, I would probably think I was very ugly, or at least very abnormal. Especially because of the reactions the character gets from everyone, perfect strangers and her own family alike.
The 1990 Baum book, 1939 MGM film, 1990 cartoon, & even the 1995 Wicked novel made The Wicked Witch of the West--rechristened Elphaba (just as Nikko [film]/Truckle [cartoon]/Christery [Wicked] are one & the same)--physically ugly, starting with her green skin that endured her lifetime (from the film onward), her infant teeth that were more like fangs (from Wicked only), & her jutting chin (the film, cartoon, and Wicked novel). The musical butchered the tragedy by making her beautiful.
I actually didnt like Wicked the book,Mainly because its too political and I have some err *twitch* Issues *Twitch* with the musical But I could almost like this song. I kind of Hate Fyerio on account of what he did to Nor and what Eli had to endure on his behalf but I could almost like this song
Im putting this in caps So you Dont miss it I dont want you to think Im just all out nitpicking THIS VID IS VERY CREATIVE WELL DONE
@Sate12: Oz was political in its original form, too. Remember, there was reason for the different lands, you know. Vinkus/Winkie, Munchkinlander, Citizen (from the City), Glinkin, Quadling...whatever your affiliation, you can't just waltz in and be some hero like The Wizard & Dorothy, especially if you're already afflicted with some problems (Elphaba's skin & obsession with her sister's magic shoes; Nessarose's crippled form & borderline dictorial views on religion and its part in the world).
@TherealRNO the four realms were devided because no one had ever united them. The wizard Diggs came down and built a magnificent city in the center of the four lands, and united them under one banner. Elphaba would never have been feared or hated or whatever because shes green. Elphaba is disliked because shes a cruel heartless cowardly brainless tyrant. Nessarose was hated for enslaving the munchkins. Also In Baums time it would be taken for granted witches were evil Glinda was the paradox
@Sate12: Depends on perspective. Recall, the Witch--Elphaba--was given a backstory (albeit an inconsistant one) in order to tell things from HER view, NOT from the views of Dorothy, Glinda, The Wizard, or any other supposed "good guys". So in Wicked, what was once bad is good & vice-versa. FYI, in Baum's time, witches were no more evil than the women's sufferage movement. This is ironic, since both Glinda & *Elphaba* trace their origins to Baum's sufferagist mom-in-law, Matilda Gage.
Fact is, Baum only wrote the Witch evil, because his readership demanded he adhere to tried-and-true expectations, regardless of whether or not they were accurate representations or were mere disenheartening stereotypes. That's why he never wished for Matilda to get wind of the fact that she was his inspiration, because she would've came down hard if she had learnt the fact (which I am sure she later did).
About time that the Wicked Witch was given the limelight (no pun intended) ...she is by far the most fascinating character in the movie to my mind. And Wicked the book is fabulous! :)
It's really a sad story. I mean here we have a girl who all her life was shunned by her green skin and then at last when she gets to do what she's wanted all her life she finds out it's all a sham. So she flees. And the powerful hypocrites make HER out to be the bad one. So sad..
@Arthurpenhalfan566: MUSICAL-ONLY. In the book, the Scarecrow is NOT Fiyero and BOTH of them--Fiyero and Elphaba--DIE, because the Witch was initially meant to be evil, not misunderstood. Even in the Wicked novel, she was evil to the extent of how she acted following Dorothy's arrival, whereas her earlier years had her be more of a tragic character, NOT unlike Shakespeare's Juliet, if Juliet were written as ugly and different.
I disagree, i think that Wicked is perfect the way it is. A film version would only make the musical seem stupid. For example, the defying gravity scene is an amazing feet to perform on stage. In a movie form, however, it would seem overdone and not quite as thrilling.
As I said for the other vid...Elphie rocks! I stick to my belief that Wicked IS the Witch's side of the MGM Ozian canon, because the Witch was nameless and lacked a backstory until Wicked came along, anyway. And thankfully, Wicked CAN still be a prequel (and continuation) of the film despite flaws, because Elphie went insane anyway...so some of her stuff may've been made up (Ex: I would like to think that Elphie DID die, but like all GOOD VILLIANS can NOT truly be killed, hence her revival).
i'm sorry! I didn't mean to! i think I have seen you're video and it is good but I had thought of the idea before I had even seen you're video and once again i am sorry. I did not use any footage of Wicked though. I guess though great minds think alike!

who's the witch of the south or the north?
Clwsfan864 1 year ago
@Clwsfan864:
Baum ~ Glinda (South) and Tattypoo [not named outright, but confirmed by Baum's desendants & successors] (North)
Wicked ~ Glinda is BOTH (just like in the MGM film)
