is this running the flat-plane, "2 V8s" cranks, or is it the proper "flat-8" ones with the 16-cylinder firing order? It's great to finally have a proper video of this engine, depsite the quality!
Best of luck to your father for getting the 43 ready. Don't forget the videos ;)
@identiticrisis this car is running 2 V8 cranks, hense the lower grunt noise when they crank it up a bit a notch in the last few seconds of the video. We are looking at firing the Lotus 43 with the H16 properly as a 16 cylinder , won't half make some noise, possibly will be similar to the V16 , i guess theres only one way to find out, and hopefully that will be this year ! :) Also we have the 1966 BRM stewart P51 ( i think its a P51 ) w/o the H16 , using a Ford V8 which was used in period
@Missouriman37 Jackie once had to say that those brmh16 would have been more suitable as yacht anchors, guess because of their heavy weight. Jim Clark on his Lotus43 (1966 Watkins Glen) scored the only win ever for this unit. Cheers
Everyone scrambled for a three liter engine for the '66 season. Maserati & Ferrari adapted sports car engines, Lotus was waiting on Mr. Duckworth's project (and used the above engine in the interim), Brabham went with the very effective Repco unit derived from an Oldsmobile engine, Climax pulled out all together, and BRM took two of their very successful V-8s, opened them up to 180 degrees, and slapped them together. It was powerful but very peaky and extremely heavy. Good gearbox spacer though.
@FosterZygote thats correct, my dad is rebuilding the 1966 Lotus 43, chassis 1 which ran with a H16 , hopefully the engine will be completed for goodwood revival this year and will be displayed there !
Actually Climax did design a 2,8 litre straight 4, which some teams used in different races. John Love actually came close to wining the South African GP in 1967 with his Cooper Climax (with the 2,8 litre 4 cylinder).
Also, both Climax and BRM used 2litre engines in many races in 1966, and Jim Clark nearly won the Dutch GP at Zandvoort against Jack Brabham in the 3 litre Brabham Repco. Clark was also on pole position for the German GP in Nurburgring with the 2 litre Climx engine
@0289XYZ its not just noise.. you can run a H16 two ways, as two V8's or in a 16 cylinder format.. still sounded brill considering they didnt even rev it over 4000..

@chrismido @chrismido Thanks for the info. :)
I'd be surprised if the exhaust sounded anything other than a 4cyl-derived scream, but all those intake "trumpets" should sound interesting!
Again, good luck!
