is there a way to get a volunteer job in this field? right now i'm a college student and an intern at a zoo. any info on volunteer work would be nice
Anyone who has seen the sun bears at Edinburgh Zoo, this is what they were rescued from initially. Sadly rescue centres across the sun bears areas are full to capacity with cases like this and zoos in the west are helping to reduce the presssure through a mix of taking on these animals and housing them in far better enclosures. We have to restore their habitats and make people aware of what is happening. We must also eradicate the demand for bear bile as well!
@thesimonmcg , Well said Simon. I hope there are more people like you who cares for the little known sun bears. Please continue help spread the words about the plights of the sun bears to the rest of the world so that people know, care and help. There are many things that we need to do to help end a lot of suffering to those life who do not speak human language. Together we MUST end the suffering!
The two sun bears at Edinburgh Zoo sadly started out like this. They were rescued from being pets by Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre in Cambodia before then moving to Edinburgh Zoo. Somnang used to be really bad with pacing like some of these bears in the small cages but he is really improving and getting into lots of playfights with his brother Rotana. They really don't make good pets. Size of a rottweiller, intelligence of a great ape, ferocity of any bear! They belong in the wild!
I think I have been into two very extreme experiences. I am one of very few people in the world who are very lucky to observe and to study sun bears in the wild, I see the best part of their life; On the other hand, I am very unfortunate to see many captive sun bears live their life in hell in small cages. Now you know the reasons why I am and have been doing for the past many years.

This is such a powerful video, Wong. I think this will really move people to want to help the sun bears.
