I chuckled so hard when he started playing, a little unsure at first and then by the next bar he launched full speed into the sequence & started improv as well. I love how his eyes never leave the script and yet he hits the right notes, this is insane'
@ron15001 No it doesn't. Ragtime wasn't around in the 1880s. Even if you extend "old west" into the early 1900s when ragtime was around, you wouldn't have heard it in what we think of as a "western" saloon. That would be like hearing Tupac in a modern-day western saloon full of cowboy types.
@Davixo75 The sheet music can be downloaded from the description. If you don't read music, the chords used throughout the main two strains are just Am, E7, A7, Dm, and B7. I'm sure you can figure out which are used when. Of course the melody in the first few bars of the main theme uses a chromatic descending figure starting on A, so most of those notes are non-chord tones.
@emlynsinatra Those other sheets are other tunes. Music sheets were just placed on top of each other as the sight-reading session went on. I believe those sheets are Max Keenlyside's "Airplane to Chicago" which Tom sight-read moments earlier (and I have posted video of that).
Tom obviously improvd more thts on th sheet, amazingly suiting the mood of the piece , I geuss thats th times u do ur impressed laughing especially in Mario world Ending Theme
@emlynsinatra Every sight-read video of Tom, he's adding a lot more than what's on the page. In a recent one, I gave him only a lead sheet (just the melody written out, with the chord names written on top) of Korobeiniki (better known for its use in Tetris), and he improvised those same 16 measures for six minutes, changing from 2/4 to 3/4 to 5/4 and all sorts of things.
What I love is that you have this excellent friend who obviously enjoys playing whatever offbeat music you put in front of him, and everyone just gathers around to hear him make magic out of it.
@candiduscorvus You should have seen everybody leaning over the back of an upright piano as he played during the West Coast Ragtime Festival afterglow party Sunday night! I do have some video from that party which will be posted in time.
@EternalSickness once you've been playing for so long, it's all muscle memory, you know exactly how far to reach the keys you want. it's pretty amazing.
BTW, I watch this Gentleman play this song daily. Thank you for posting! Such an amazing piece performed by an amazing person!! It really is an honor to hear music, and to have people accomplished enough to play it with such pizazz!

@Pianomantodd1 At the end (from about 1 minute 40 seconds onward), he's just making up an ending off the top of his head (the sheet music has no ending, you'll notice), so of course he isn't looking at the page anymore. The sheet music is only one page (it's sitting on top of a bunch of other things that were played earlier). This is basically 24 bars repeated over and over, but played differently every time, concluding with a patented Brier extended ending.
You are correct that "ALMOST no one is that good." Almost no one. Tom is extraordinary. PLEASE
