  • I chuckled so hard when he started playing, a little unsure at first and then by the next bar he launched full speed into the sequence & started improv as well. I love how his eyes never leave the script and yet he hits the right notes, this is insane'

  • haha nice work, feels like this could have been played in a 1880's old west saloon as well.

  • @ron15001 No it doesn't. Ragtime wasn't around in the 1880s. Even if you extend "old west" into the early 1900s when ragtime was around, you wouldn't have heard it in what we think of as a "western" saloon. That would be like hearing Tupac in a modern-day western saloon full of cowboy types.

  • this is healing all my wounds....

  • This made my day. Thank you, master Tom!

  • Any chance you could get him to play on a midi keyboard or something similar to produce a midi version of his ragtime music?

  • I FEEL THE ENERGY OF THE DAMN MUSIC!!

  • i guess time has come to make a CD "best videogames music by Tom Brier". i'd like to buy that for my music collection

  • nice

  • Это просто великолепно. Самый шикарный момент на 0:55.

  • could give me the chords please? friend

  • @Davixo75 The sheet music can be downloaded from the description. If you don't read music, the chords used throughout the main two strains are just Am, E7, A7, Dm, and B7. I'm sure you can figure out which are used when. Of course the melody in the first few bars of the main theme uses a chromatic descending figure starting on A, so most of those notes are non-chord tones.

  • I am a fan of the game and I am now a fan of Tom playing the song from the game!!!!!

  • man I want this to play when Im running from the police :D

  • @spiderman952 LOL!!!

  • Printed this out to show my grandad, he had fun trying to play it xD By the way, this guy is amazing :D

  • LIKE A BAWWWWWWS

  • Incredible stuff :)

  • THIS GUYS GOT IT IN HIS SOUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OH MY GOD THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Haha love it :)

  • wow, it's great !!!what piano player !!!!!

  • This guy amazes me every time.

  • 好懷念的遊戲

  • This is incredible

    I love Tom

  • 2 people dont know what a piano is

  • Please make a studio recording of this, im listening to this every day.

  • This song almost looks as difficult to play as the game

  • sweet mother of neck beard

  • I notice the sheet in the film has 4 pages and the one u tag has only 1 page, wheres the other 3?

  • @emlynsinatra Those other sheets are other tunes. Music sheets were just placed on top of each other as the sight-reading session went on. I believe those sheets are Max Keenlyside's "Airplane to Chicago" which Tom sight-read moments earlier (and I have posted video of that).

  • Tom obviously improvd more thts on th sheet, amazingly suiting the mood of the piece , I geuss thats th times u do ur impressed laughing especially in Mario world Ending Theme

  • @emlynsinatra Every sight-read video of Tom, he's adding a lot more than what's on the page. In a recent one, I gave him only a lead sheet (just the melody written out, with the chord names written on top) of Korobeiniki (better known for its use in Tetris), and he improvised those same 16 measures for six minutes, changing from 2/4 to 3/4 to 5/4 and all sorts of things.

  • I'm looking at the notes provided but I feel like Tom is adding notes and his own stuff in with the notes he is reading

is the sheet provided EVERYTHING that tom is doing?

  • @nickteezy408 The sheet provided is what he's reading. What he actually plays while he reads it is a whole lot more.

  • ok, I'm subscribing!

  • This is just as impressive as actually finishing Ghosts n Goblins. Well done!

  • If there is ever a spaghetti western reboot of Ghosts N Goblins, get this guy on the phone.

  • I absolutely love his ending on this one!

  • What I love is that you have this excellent friend who obviously enjoys playing whatever offbeat music you put in front of him, and everyone just gathers around to hear him make magic out of it.

  • @candiduscorvus You should have seen everybody leaning over the back of an upright piano as he played during the West Coast Ragtime Festival afterglow party Sunday night! I do have some video from that party which will be posted in time.

  • @candiduscorvus That is not somebody's mere friend. That is Tom Brier.

  • Satan disliked this

  • @momkiller1 I'd say the red arremer instead.

  • Amazing how he can hit such far keys without even looking...

  • @EternalSickness once you've been playing for so long, it's all muscle memory, you know exactly how far to reach the keys you want. it's pretty amazing.

  • Hours spent playing this game......i could of spent them playing an instrument......

  • god i can't stop staring at his hands

  • Request: monkey island stuff =]

  • BTW, I watch this Gentleman play this song daily. Thank you for posting! Such an amazing piece performed by an amazing person!! It really is an honor to hear music, and to have people accomplished enough to play it with such pizazz!

  • Incredible... especially this song...

  • TIL there are ragtime parties.

Also, Tom has beastly piano prowess.

  • I CAME HERE CUZ OF REDDIT

  • My friend played this to me in the middle of our student lounge. I started crying due to all the memories of me dying.

  • i just spontaniously combusted....

  • Wow, this takes almost as much skill as finishing Ghost'n Goblins!

  • holy fucking shit... :3

  • This man is the embodiment of pure human potential.

  • I just realized i'm much too high for this.

  • Piano is such an incredible instrument when it's used properly...

  • Tom is the man

  • OH you know what else would be great for him (besides Chrono Trigger and Donkey Kong Country)?? Mario RPG tunes. There's some swinging stuff in there

  • @kylezo

The regular battle theme, Beware the Forest's Mushrooms, and the first Smithy fight would be fantastic.

  • freaking awesome

  • Please make professional recording of all these and upload it on itunes! Amazing

  • This literally made my brain go numb from happiness. One of those rare special times when your brain just starts to melt from satisfaction from a piece of music.

  • @mindhackz Same reaction! Great piece of music!

  • Do you have two brains?

  • Amazing. Also, that neckbeard is dangerously close to becoming a chest beard.

  • 1 person couldn't beat GnG.

  • "hmmm...interesting" .... PROCEEDS TO DO AMAZING SIGHT READING

  • No no, really, look at this guy banging out a past representation to the Saloons back in Cali; Circa 1898 to be exact, Thursday night, poker awaits, but that last whiskey shot aint quite kicked in yet. Better get another.

    BARTENDER!!!

  • @stargroove4 Heh... "circa ... to be exact" ... hmmm!

  • Of course Steven King can play this flawlessly!

  • Thank you raocow for showing me this amazingness! :D

  • -''ASSHOLE!!! I PLAY THIS GAME BUT This GUY'S WAS IN MY BACK DOING BETTER!!! MAD RESPECT!!!''-

  • oooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmggggggggggggg jizzzzzzzzzzzzz im my paaaaaaaaaaaaannntsssssssssssssss

  • Piano wizard!

  • who is a "female japanese composer"?

  • @BlueVangaCovers The composer of this tune, Ayako Mori.

  • @Keeper1st

    thank you :)

  • @Keeper1st If only someone would show her this

  • @Keeper1st haha that reminds me on detectiv conan. you know, kogoro mori. In the Episode i watched yesterday, there was a woman who is called Ayako :D

  • if only he didnt have a neckbeard.

  • @pmj117 Then he wouldn't have his talent.

  • @abola2121 It's too bad I don't have any video of Tom from before he grew it. People would be like, "Who the heck is that? He plays like Tom Brier!"

  • @Pianomantodd1 At the end (from about 1 minute 40 seconds onward), he's just making up an ending off the top of his head (the sheet music has no ending, you'll notice), so of course he isn't looking at the page anymore. The sheet music is only one page (it's sitting on top of a bunch of other things that were played earlier). This is basically 24 bars repeated over and over, but played differently every time, concluding with a patented Brier extended ending.

  • You are correct that "ALMOST no one is that good." Almost no one. Tom is extraordinary. I and others have plenty of videos of him sight-reading things where you can hear his reaction upon seeing or hearing the music, and maybe a few flubs the first time through. If you're not convinced, write something of your own (preferably in the ragtime/blues/novelty vein which is his specialty), come see him play and hand it to him. He will play it, undoubtedly embellishing upon it the first time through.

  • @Pianomantodd1 You've obviously never had any sort of mastery over an instrument, or any knowledge into sight reading/music theory. it's fairly easy to make up a random addition to something if you know the chord progressions and such. The last part wasn't a part of the original song, so if anything, you've just punctuated how awesome this dude is.

  • If the theme had been ragtime like this, I might've been slightly less incredibly insane from dying every other second.

  • 1 person is deaf

  • Damn that's some tight playing, amazing.

  • Where can I get a Tom Brier? Because I really want one.

  • Improvising while sight reading is a sport to him, isn't it?

    *R.E.S.P.E.C.T*

...and keep us entertained with more awesome stuff ^_^

  • *turns into frog

  • Oh bloody hell, I don't wanna be the guy. >.<

  • 1 person never survived long enough in the game to hear the whole tune... :/

  • Saloon song :3

  • when you listen to people like this good man playing piano, you start to doubt about how should you call him....piano Master...or piano MONSTER.....and i say this with all the humor in the world.

that was fantastic,i'm starting to love his interpretations.

  • my brain is all over the fucking ceiling. awesome

  • AH IM BEGINING PLAYING PIANO, IT LOOKS HARD

  • @slashvid321

Well, you shouldn't start here if you're looking for an example of a piece.

This is the exploit of a true legend at work.

  • awsooooome

  • I really appreciate you attaching the sheets for this! But as for the mistakes it is obvious where they are but not so obvious how to fix them (at least for beginners). Can you please tell us how to correct them?

  • @TheAlphaBetaParticle You're kidding, right? There's one F that should be a G# obviously.

  • @Keeper1st

Oh. I thought there were a few more mistakes. Guess not. Thanks.

  • @Keeper1st amazing sight reading! and btw, is the download supposed to be only one page?

  • @LunarD3mon6 Yes. It's just that one theme repeated over and over. There's no ending on the score; just make up your own. The other pages you see on the video are different tunes that had been played earlier.

  • I fucking came.

  • I laugh everytime the guy on the back does.

  • I can't help but imagine how cool this would be on an organ...

  • @kozinc Ooh, yeah. I can imagine that.

  • @kozinc well organs tend to lose the punch of the individual notes so you run the danger of something this complicated getting the notes all muddled together

  • Coooool

  • Amazing.

  • and I thought it was ghosts and ghouls?

  • @epsguy23 Ghouls & Ghosts was the sequel to Ghosts & Goblins.

  • great job!!!

  • I bet I could learn to play this before I could learn how to beat G&G without cheating.

  • arthur starts his quest to rescue lady prin-prin from the evil industrialist lord satan, who has tied her to railroad tracks

  • i.....LOVE THAT REMIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tom just shows what they call "god play". now while playing G&G i always imagine this performance

  • Genial.

  • When he plays it like that, it makes me think of an old time silent movie, and I start picturing Ghosts N' Goblins in black and white...

  • holy shit! it's Beeker with a beard!

  • 0:43 i love how accurate his left hand is..

  • @starpower1245 That left hand has a mind of its own!

  • Now all we need is some Castlevania. <3

  • very nice

  • Stunning!

  • *adjusts brim on tattered chimneypot hat and gazes around poker table shiftily*

  • This is amazing!!!

  • OH MY GOD..... i'm in year 8 and just starting to learn piano All I know is a fith of beethove and some other stuff.... BUT THIS IS AWESOME it looks so good it almost ooks like its sped up... (Time to print off the sheet music and show it my music teacher ;) )

  • @Mr0r4n9ey If you want to see something that looks sped up, check an old video I posted called "More of the Amazing Hands of Tom Brier" where I slow the video down to half speed, then play it again at regular speed. The half speed looks normal, while the correct speed looks like fast-forward!

  • 52702 visits?Am I the only who see this video?

  • なんて陽気な魔界村だ・・・・・

  • His hands - God's hand's

  • Actually this is a rag transcription of the original piece (not a rag). Anyway impressing job by the pianist, well done

  • Looks like we're in a saloon.

Gimme some cards and let's play poker.

  • @Ars3nLup1n Actually, we're in the entry room of a Victorian house.

  • @Keeper1st Oh sorry, misunderstanding I think. I was talking about the music, not the place ^^

Just saying that Ghost'n Goblins theme would fit perfectly in a western saloon.

  • @Ars3nLup1n Well, not really, as this is ragtime. You wouldn't have heard ragtime in a western saloon. Midwest saloon in an African-American neighborhood, sure, but not out West with cowboys ...

  • @Keeper1st This could pretty much fit into a Chaplin's movie, beeing such fast paced, where the music counts a lot more.

This or a bar fight seen from afar.

  • @epsguy23 I'm not the pianist; I'm operating the camera. But my suggestion would be to learn intervals and how chords are formed. Don't stress so much on note names; that way you'll be able to play in any key simply by knowing "if this is the tonic note of the key, then my dominant chord is here and relative minor is here..." and so on. Tom has an advantage in that he learned music from age 5 so it's practically second nature for him.

  • @Keeper1st dang im 14 and im still off and on the piano :S still Ive always wanted to play it.

  • @Ars3nLup1n Yeah! I know exactly what you mean! It totally sounds like a saloon song!! xD.. If you want, go check Tuengxx's version of this song.. it's amazing as well as this one of course ;) but no "saloon style" hahaha

  • @Ars3nLup1n

*bartender slides you a glass of beer*

  • 1 people turned into a skeleton

  • Adam was here..

  • There are some very questionable chord choices and wierd notes here and there, though if thats his first time seeing the sheets for it then all that improv(im assuming since it wasn't part of the original song that it wasn't on the sheets either) was damn good.

  • SOMEONE! PLEASE get this dude an EXPENSIVE digital piano, one of those with the real piano action inside, but instead of striking string, the pads strike a sensor, so we can record these performances digitally.

    PLEASE

  • I must have watched this video one hundred times over the past few weeks and everytime I still cant believe its real.

  • You are a brilliant pianist, thank you for raising these videoes xDD
