  • im gonna name my duaghter bernadette

  • I almost cried when I first heard this song...its so true...I love her

  • fucking legend

  • she is my idol, she inspired me to want to pursue theatre :)

  • @Msbroadway4eva SAME!

  • I posted the video above because of the impact on infants of a mother's interventions. It is all about listening and understanding the impact of mother's on their daughters and then on their children.

  • Meh.

  • I'm the witch at my schools production of Into the Woods and Bernadette is my idolll she is absolutely spectacular :)

  • Bernadette is a goddess!

  • im in love with her......

  • She's the reason I chose to be the Witch in our school's production of "Into The Woods." I hope one day, I'll find my way to Broadway like Bernadette and Barbra and Vivica did. <3

  • i want her as a bday gift. where do i click?

  • I love Sondheim. I love Into the Woods. I love Bernadette. I love everything about this video.

  • God i love her as the witch in into the woods !

  • I love this song! Thanks for the post :)

    ~Dennise

  • Beans! beans? The Special Beanss!

  • I swear if they do this on glee and anybody but bernadette performs it........I AM GOING RED REDING HOOD!

  • @lesyllphide I think Glee would do an alright job with this song, so long as they were careful. They could have Idina sing it. She would do a great job.

  • @lesyllphide Don't worry...Glee doesn't have enough taste to do sondheim

  • That's little shimmer oh vibrato on listen is amazing!!!

  • Performance rights for INTO THE WOODS are available from Music Theatre International.

  • Time to watch Into the Woods.. I bought it at Barnes and Noble on DVD ftw

  • @Iww9rock My dear she WAS the original witch.

  • I Love You, Bernadette Peters...You are and always will be the Queen Bee of Musical Theatre...

  • shes is beautiful and has the most beautiful voice :)

  • Im singing this as my Audition song for Honk! im trying out for Ida :P

  • I just played this video at least 12 times in a row.

  • @melissamarie9597 SAMEEE!!!!!!! :D

  • @socrateskennedy i don't even know how to respond to your comment. it's just so ridiculous! she clearly can sing...extremely well. this is why she is one of the biggest stars of musical theatre ever. not only can she sing amazingly but she can act the hell out of a song.

  • @musicjameshill Nah, don't worry about it. This guy has commented on *multiple* videos of Bernadette proclaiming how little talent she has--especially compared to him. It's obvious someone suffers from a lack of tact, so don't sweat it...after all, Bernadette Peters is the one who's spent over 40 years on Broadway, winning Tony's, Grammy's and Drama Dest Awards, and is about to take NYC by storm once again with "Follies". Comments like that won't deter her phenomenal talents.

  • perfection.

  • brilliantly written and expertly performed. perfection

  • ... She IS the original Witch (and, in my opinion, by far the best). Beautifully talented, this woman.

  • LUV HER BETTER THAN ORIGINAL WITCH

  • @lww9rock Sondheim actually wrote the role of the witch FOR Bernadette Peters.

  • @lww9rock Are you sure you actually watched Into The Woods? This IS the original witch.

  • I love her and this song likelikelike!

  • :)

  • im listening...

  • Watching her in concert was one of the highlights of my life.

  • Bernadette Peters is the Queen of Broadway singing! This song always makes me cry when I sing it. She is a Sondheim specialist and a superb singer. There is nothing she can't do!! She's a wonderful dancer, actress and performer!

  • did she sing this in 'Into the Woods' ? [: i've never seen it.

  • @011FunnyBunny Yes. She was the original singer.

  • Comment removed

  • Hah, ever heard of the term "opera singer?" the would, I don't know, imply that opera is singing? Just a little bit obvious?

  • I Wish MY Mom Would Litsen To This So She Would Understand How I Feel

  • The song is so true

  • I'm crying.

  • Beautiful song from "Into the Woods"

  • She reduces me to tears every time. She has such a beautiful voice.

  • and she also played sophie in anastasia by don bluth :)

  • My very favourite number from this show, my godd we had to sit through an outdoor theatre version of it.

I live Bernadette's singing so much, and CANNOT BELIEVE she 's 60 in this performance - wot?

  • @pianomags Ahh ok, she's 49 here, but 62 now.

My favourite number from this lonnnnng show gnnh

Love Bernadette Peters, her performances are perfection. :)

  • @pianomags shes 49 there? wow

  • @pianomags she looks the same=]

  • I need to find a version of bernadette peters singing "stay with me" from into the woods, but i can't. i've searched for like weeks! can someone help me out here?

  • @blueeyedblonde123... Did you find the track you were seeking? I may be able to help you with that one. Find me in here, I have an account. I also have the full soundtrack.

  • FLAWLESS.

  • Amazing! I luuuuurrrvvveeeeeee this!

  • Into the woods is not a comedy it is a drama that has some comedy parts, so @sweeney60 it's not suppose to be funny

  • Into the woods is not a comedy it is a drama that has some comedy parts, so @sweeney60 it's not suppose to funny

  • @stevesg92 they're different. they both have their own styles. you can't put them against each other that's not fair to either of them. they both sound beautiful. why do you have to compare? just enjoy them both for what they are.

  • @stevesg92, Barbara Streisand? Seriously?

  • @Kari166 ?

  • @stevesg92, your comment a few pages back...? XDD

  • @Kari166 it's Barbra

  • sounds too operatic... don't like it

  • @stevesg92 well she was the original singer of this song, and this isnt pop... this is musical theater. its not operatic at all....

  • @francolongobardi95 What I'm trying to say is that I, like most people, want to hear a voice like Barbra's..... she has one, if not the most, beautiful and powerful voices in the world and Bernadette sounds operatic and not like a singer... got it?

  • Comment removed

  • @stevesg92 Well then don't click on a video entitled Children Will Listen by Bernadette Peters because the name of the singer isn't your barbra is Bernadette so don't complain when you chose to listen to HER and not barbra so shut up and don't be rude!!!!!!

  • 2 people didn't listen

  • I love her,,,,,this woman can sing!!!!!

  • @TheLenbear

i dont think there is anyone who compares.

there are great singers out there, but none with her tone and her spirit.

  • @sweeney60 hmmm... maybe Barbra Streisand who sings this much better... she has a much more beautiful and powerful voice.

  • @stevesg92

perhaps, but it was written for a soprano, and barbra is an alto.

in her own version, perhaps barbra does sing it quite well, but as

far as singing the original version goes, no one can top Bernadette.

  • omg i am doing this show in a month as the which and i am nothing compared to her i love it!!!!!!!

  • I can't believe it! I wanted to know who voice rita in animaniacs I never thought I'll be so moved by her.

  • I wish every parent could hear this song! It has sooooo much truth in it

  • The first time I heard this song, I cried.

  • By far my favorite Broadway Diva ever...

  • This song, this show is so wise. And beautiful.

  • love her vibrato. Her voice is so angelic.

  • This song makes me cry every time at the end of the DVD. I'm having tears in my eyes just watching this. Because this is one of the strongest of Stephen Sondheim's lyrics: "Careful before you say, listen to me: Children Listen". Because they will.

  • ahhh, i love her head voice....*sigh*

  • @berryshorttcake will try that line if I meet a sexy singer :)

  • OH! I LOVE THIS SONG! AND HER!!! :) I was the Witch in Into The Woods and sang this :). ♥ LOVE IT!

  • love this song!

  • she's boss, and she's a fucking beast when she sings this song(:

    she owns.

  • I'm so excited. I get to play the Witch and Bernadette is amazing. I deeply love her!

  • My favorite song! ♥♥♥

  • I have listened to this video about 100 times in the past 3 days. xD

  • this song reminds me of the movie Prayers for Bobby anyone else?

  • @xander391391 Not until you said that....now I'm crying lol

  • @xander391391 Like organist08 said, I didn't until you mentioned it. *sniffle*

  • I just saw Prayers for Bobby and her speech remembered me this song right away!

    oh well, what to say?

  • she is absolutely amazing! i look up to her so much

  • Amazing(: love the musical into the woods (:

  • Amazing(: love the musical into the woods(:

  • OMFG, I love Bernadette Peters like there is no tomorrow. There is nobody like her!

  • i LOVE this song!! im trying to learn it for auditions!

  • Fabulous varrangement, really catches the sensitivity of the Into The Woods, she really understands Stephen Sondheims world ! xxx

  • oh my word. she's so amazing.

  • Not quite. She's really singing to the baker about his son. Warning him. Helping him.

  • Where exactly in the musical does this song play, i know it's part of the finale and part of a few other songs, but is there a part where she just sings this song? i wanted to see it in context

  • it's right after cinderella, the baker, jack, and little red kill the giant.

everyone who's died - all the main characters xD - come on stage and say what they've learned through the whole experience in the woods.

then the witch comes on and sings this song because her daughter, rapunzel, ran away from her when the witch tried to control her and ended up getting killed by the giant.

then the rest of the cast joins in for the finale.

i was in it with my school and it's a phenominal show.

  • i was interested in the song. grrrr..........

  • If you don't like her why come to her video?

  • then why would you watch her video?

  • Aw, why?

  • wonderful but it annoys me that she doesnt hold her phrases long enough at the start. well as long as i would like the to be.

  • She is only adding interpretation to the song, the lenght of her phrases is purely decorational, i don't knwo if you are familiar with the Musical Theatre style, but you need to convey the meaning of the lyric and make certain choices, about these technical issues in order to make the performance honest and make sense~! she is truly a master at this, and one of Stephen Sondheims good friends! its hard to listen to different versions than your faves but accept it for what it is, and enjoy !

  • You're right but you're such a know it all, annoying...

  • Im not a know it all im just a singing teacher, i work in the west end, my teacher is mary hammond, im sorry if you think im annoying .... i dont mean to be

  • She has such a fantastic voice. A song I would like to hear her sing would be 'Melodies of Life' from FFIX.

  • I never could stand her. I think I just changed my mind.

  • I just jumped on your wagon

  • Beautiful!!

  • I love her voice! She is so perfect, especially for the role of the witch! If they ever make an 'Into the Woods' film, she had better be cast as the witch! I know she's older now, but she can certainly still sing just as beautifully as before!

  • there already is one

    the witch is her :D

    she's really good

  • Oh, I know about the filmed Broadway show, but I meant an actual, Hollywood movie. I really love this show! I'm trying to convince my director at school to do this. But it would be hard to think of anyone else playing the witch besides Bernadette Peters!

  • She is the witch. Also, Chip Zien is one of the few really decent bakers I've ever seen

  • I don't know, I didn't really like Chip Zien's portrayl of the backer. He didn't seem to get into the character all that much, especially in the first act. In act II, after the death of his wife, he showed some better acting ability, but before that I didn't think much of his acting talent.

  • I can understand that, although I sorta think that's how the baker is supposed to, very flaky and surface level, until the wife dies. and he's one of the few who I've seen who doesn't go too far at the end. No More isn't intended to be melodrama and most people make it that.

  • I guess I understand that. He didn't seem to have that much of a personality in the show. He starts to gain one as the show goes on, and that helps him to grow as a character and as a man.

  • @sirusbones

i think chip was great, there wasnt much emotion to be shown of any of the characters in the first act, the real drama hits act two

  • @sweeney60 I suppose that's true. Act II is definitely far more dramatic, as opposed to the comedy-filled first act. I think that's why I like Act II a lot more. Btw, I love your user name. :D

  • @sirusbones

as do i, sweeney todd was already taken. And yes Act 2 is far superior and by far my favorite.

  • @sweeney60 Sweeney Todd. Another one of my favorite musicals. In fact, I would go as far as saying it IS my favorite. Into the Woods is my second. And yes, I would definitely agree that, although Act II isn't quite as funny, the drama and the character development is wonderful. Beautifully written, and enough to bring tears to my eyes every time I see it.

  • Even though it's not necessarily a sad song, this always makes me cry. "Careful before you say 'listen to me'", these lyrics are perfection and Bernadette, as always, was made to sing Sondheim.

  • there is definitely a sad element to this song...some advice...even a warning. It's sad when you realize what too many adults do to their kids by what they say.

  • When I was in this sohw in the 7th grade we did the junior version which is just the 1st act but it was still so much fun and at the curtian call the cast sang this song and every time we sang this we had people crying and each time we got a standing ovation.

  • I was part of a crew for the junior version as well, and we sang this song. Ahhh...the memories!

  • bernadette is the greatest (after mrs andrews, obvi).

she guest starred in greys season 2 (i think it was that season), and i was so jacked! none of my other friends knew who she was :(

  • Right? I watched her in Will and Grace starring as Karen's sister, none of my friends know her.

  • I swear she has the prettiest voice I've ever heard...She was the best choice they could have made to play the Witch

  • Bernadette is unreal. Her voice is so powerful and captivating. A true goddess

  • This song makes me cry especially this performance. She has such a great voice and such a presence and talent. What she does with a song is simply amazing.

  • I love her so much. She is amazing.

By far the best witch EVER in Into the Woods...Others don't compare.

    Beautiful...

  • @MushroomLake She was the First witch ever so everyone had to live up to her which is not physically possible

  • @MushroomLake Well, the role was literally made for her, no? She was Sondheim's muse for a while, anyway... --Ember--

  • @EmberLeo Not exactly. Although, I LOVED her in this role and had a hard time seeing other witches--Sondheim originally wrote the role of the witch for Betty Buckley, who was fired due to her unprofessional lateness. They just got fed up and canned her... fortunately for musical theater, the illustrious and talented Bernadette was cast!

  • @MushroomLake its not fair to everyone else. she brings a certain character that no one can mimic or compare to.

  • This song is amazing. She is incredible.

  • i totally agree, into the woods is one of my favorite musicals, me and my sister are like obsessed :)

  • lmao ive watched the dvd of into the woods like 10 times this week.. its amazing..lol

  • this makes me cry. it's so gorgeous. :]

  • she is so so so so good.

  • I love her sososo much

  • i love, love, love her and i love this song, i'm gonna sing this for my class :)
