She's the reason I chose to be the Witch in our school's production of "Into The Woods." I hope one day, I'll find my way to Broadway like Bernadette and Barbra and Vivica did. <3
@lesyllphide I think Glee would do an alright job with this song, so long as they were careful. They could have Idina sing it. She would do a great job.
@socrateskennedy i don't even know how to respond to your comment. it's just so ridiculous! she clearly can sing...extremely well. this is why she is one of the biggest stars of musical theatre ever. not only can she sing amazingly but she can act the hell out of a song.
@musicjameshill Nah, don't worry about it. This guy has commented on *multiple* videos of Bernadette proclaiming how little talent she has--especially compared to him. It's obvious someone suffers from a lack of tact, so don't sweat it...after all, Bernadette Peters is the one who's spent over 40 years on Broadway, winning Tony's, Grammy's and Drama Dest Awards, and is about to take NYC by storm once again with "Follies". Comments like that won't deter her phenomenal talents.
Bernadette Peters is the Queen of Broadway singing! This song always makes me cry when I sing it. She is a Sondheim specialist and a superb singer. There is nothing she can't do!! She's a wonderful dancer, actress and performer!
I need to find a version of bernadette peters singing "stay with me" from into the woods, but i can't. i've searched for like weeks! can someone help me out here?
@blueeyedblonde123... Did you find the track you were seeking? I may be able to help you with that one. Find me in here, I have an account. I also have the full soundtrack.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
and she can't make those low notes good.... and when she has to hit higher notes she switches to the only thing she has.... a voice for opera..... Barbra Streisand 100x better.
@stevesg92 they're different. they both have their own styles. you can't put them against each other that's not fair to either of them. they both sound beautiful. why do you have to compare? just enjoy them both for what they are.
@francolongobardi95 What I'm trying to say is that I, like most people, want to hear a voice like Barbra's..... she has one, if not the most, beautiful and powerful voices in the world and Bernadette sounds operatic and not like a singer... got it?
@stevesg92 Well then don't click on a video entitled Children Will Listen by Bernadette Peters because the name of the singer isn't your barbra is Bernadette so don't complain when you chose to listen to HER and not barbra so shut up and don't be rude!!!!!!
This song makes me cry every time at the end of the DVD. I'm having tears in my eyes just watching this. Because this is one of the strongest of Stephen Sondheim's lyrics: "Careful before you say, listen to me: Children Listen". Because they will.
Where exactly in the musical does this song play, i know it's part of the finale and part of a few other songs, but is there a part where she just sings this song? i wanted to see it in context
it's right after cinderella, the baker, jack, and little red kill the giant.
everyone who's died - all the main characters xD - come on stage and say what they've learned through the whole experience in the woods.
then the witch comes on and sings this song because her daughter, rapunzel, ran away from her when the witch tried to control her and ended up getting killed by the giant.
then the rest of the cast joins in for the finale.
i was in it with my school and it's a phenominal show.
She is only adding interpretation to the song, the lenght of her phrases is purely decorational, i don't knwo if you are familiar with the Musical Theatre style, but you need to convey the meaning of the lyric and make certain choices, about these technical issues in order to make the performance honest and make sense~! she is truly a master at this, and one of Stephen Sondheims good friends! its hard to listen to different versions than your faves but accept it for what it is, and enjoy !
Im not a know it all im just a singing teacher, i work in the west end, my teacher is mary hammond, im sorry if you think im annoying .... i dont mean to be
I love her voice! She is so perfect, especially for the role of the witch! If they ever make an 'Into the Woods' film, she had better be cast as the witch! I know she's older now, but she can certainly still sing just as beautifully as before!
Oh, I know about the filmed Broadway show, but I meant an actual, Hollywood movie. I really love this show! I'm trying to convince my director at school to do this. But it would be hard to think of anyone else playing the witch besides Bernadette Peters!
I don't know, I didn't really like Chip Zien's portrayl of the backer. He didn't seem to get into the character all that much, especially in the first act. In act II, after the death of his wife, he showed some better acting ability, but before that I didn't think much of his acting talent.
I can understand that, although I sorta think that's how the baker is supposed to, very flaky and surface level, until the wife dies. and he's one of the few who I've seen who doesn't go too far at the end. No More isn't intended to be melodrama and most people make it that.
I guess I understand that. He didn't seem to have that much of a personality in the show. He starts to gain one as the show goes on, and that helps him to grow as a character and as a man.
@sweeney60 I suppose that's true. Act II is definitely far more dramatic, as opposed to the comedy-filled first act. I think that's why I like Act II a lot more. Btw, I love your user name. :D
@sweeney60 Sweeney Todd. Another one of my favorite musicals. In fact, I would go as far as saying it IS my favorite. Into the Woods is my second. And yes, I would definitely agree that, although Act II isn't quite as funny, the drama and the character development is wonderful. Beautifully written, and enough to bring tears to my eyes every time I see it.
Even though it's not necessarily a sad song, this always makes me cry. "Careful before you say 'listen to me'", these lyrics are perfection and Bernadette, as always, was made to sing Sondheim.
there is definitely a sad element to this song...some advice...even a warning. It's sad when you realize what too many adults do to their kids by what they say.
