Great movie. Too bad they made Gus Grissom look like he screwed up. More recent investigations make it clear he didn't hit the emergency door release. It was most likely caused by a parachute line catching the external emergency release lever. He died on Apollo 1, so didn't live to see his name get cleared.
@sephalon1 actually a commitee decided that it wasn't his fault before the apollo missions, which is why there were no explosive bolts on apollo one, which is one of the reasons he died. Ironic...
I absolutely love this song and this movie. I find it amazing how us humans went somewhere we knew almost nothing about. Oh and "No bucks, no buck Rogers" I love that quote :P
Actually this is Holsts planets. I believe it's Jupiter or Saturn but no it is not tchaicosky or however u spell it.
I love this movie. Not one I'm gonna watch all over time and time again, but once every 2 years or so really puts some back bone into ur life. It's a pretty inspirational movie !!!!
No, sorry, I know both the Tchaikovsky violin concerto and Holst's planets by heart (played them both in orchestra), and this was definitely stolen from the Tchaikovsky concerto. I guess that's why I love this so much!
When I was a child, the Mercury astronauts were my heroes. As I got older, and I learned that they were imperfect men making huge efforts to do things no one had done before, they became heroes to me all over again. They showed me that you don't have to be a saint to do great things. All of us, if we choose, are capable of great feats. God bless them all.
@Chicagoan444 You are so right with your comments. I remember so well watching from my classroom on a small black and white tv, the launches of the Mercury astronauts. It was because of this push into science that I became a science teacher. I think back to a speech I gave a while back, to how it was like living in the 60's, when a new career was added to the list of policeman, fireman, lawyer, teacher, then, astronaut.
Whether the Apollo lot actually went to the moon or not, all the Gemini astronauts were true pioneers who went further, faster than man had ever gone before, and deserve true respect.
@Alabamon You can't resolve Apollo artifacts with ANY telescope on earth or in orbit like Hubble! Of course they landed on the moon, but you can NOT see the equipment left behind. You can see the LOCATION of the landing site, but you can't resolve the pieces of equipment. This is a big misconception.
@Alabamon Yes, but you can't see Apollo artifacts with any telescope ON earth or in orbit (around the earth) LIKE Hubble is what I said. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is in orbit around the moon and much, much closer so able to resolve some of the largest Apollo artifacts. I can see how it may have seemed confusing since I didn't include "around the earth" in my comment - I just used the HST as an example. Thanks for the link.
That's not what BradBrassman said, what he said was that all the Gemini astronauts were true pioneers who went further, faster than man had ever gone before, and deserve true respect
does anyone find it ironic that this is from Tchaikosky's Violin Concerto and these are Americans. Tchaikovsky is a dead gay Russian....i find that very funny
@owen3949 This is not Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. It's an original soundtrack piece from the movie and was written by Bill Conti, the same gentleman who wrote the score to Rocky.
@PsychoCheese1337 - Loan me some will ya? Ill pay ya back later. I love that reference with a passion because it refers to a superstition that you could not crash and burn; Because you would have to come home and pay back your buddy that stick of gum.
Nostalgia x2... Wish I could of been a pilot in the Air Force!!!

@BradBrassman LAL! Strange praise. They sure zoomed about the movie set.
This music sounds like fragments of several concert marches by other composers. Sounds like keyboard synth.
