@ApoC552 No.....he uses FM8 for his Growl basses and uses EQ8 in Ableton to make the vowels change. He also uses Massive but it isn't for his Growl basses at all. Search up Skrillex - FM8 ....that's what the song was called before it was called "Scary Monsters & Spirtes" it was "FM8"
Look up interview everywhere on google with Skrillex. He says he uses FM8/ Massive/ Gladiator/ Sylenth1/ Izotope Ozone/ Ohmnicide
@Xreeds I don't know why you wrote "lol this actually managed to sound worse than the original" either, how could you hope for me to make the track sound better than the original. Derp.
@PsycopathMasks Sorry I don't quite follow, if you want to have a look at the synths open up the project files which you can download in the description.
@MrLeeski1 Thats wierd, because this set was created in Live 8.0.5 so it should work, make sure you are using a legit copy of ableton (i.e not pirated) because they often have faults in them.
@MrLeeski1 You open ableton then reason, drag an instance of 'external instrument' into arrangment view and select the input from reason, and the appropriate channel input (1/2 is mine) but yours could be 3/4 or 5/6 etc. Hope this helps
@AtotheKish Hello, what exactly do you need a tutorial for? If you want to analyse the synths, download the project files linked in the description, and have a look at the synths yourself :) I know that Malleus Dub has made a great tutorial for the growl synth in Reason if you have a look at it, and you can translate that into any Vst you want i.e Massive.
@AceTheIntrovertMusic Most DAW's have built in Rewire engine, just open your master DAW (mine was ableton), make a channel with an external instrument, and then select the input channel from reason.
@ZOOKAROOS My computer isn't good enough to make a high-quality screen/audio recording, if you want to hear it at its best quality download the project files in the description :)
@HirachieOfSociety no, i used reason 4.0 if you look in the latter half of the video you can see i use subtractor and scream amps to create the growl sound.
hay man for reason i only get the 2nd Growl part and not the top first can u post another reason project file with it fixed please REALLY APPRECIATE IT :D
dude how the hell did you get so good on music software? i've just started trying to use it all and i have no clue at all on how to do any of it. any tips lol?
@knowwhatimean92 : Thanks dude, I just kept at it, covering songs by artists is a fantastic way to learn, reading up on synthesis, and finding a vst synth plugin you are very comfortable with are all good things to take up. There are thousands of tutorials all over the web on how to use a DAW but you'll find the best way is to just jump straight in a start making a beat straight away, don't be overly ambitious right from the start and you'll start to progress straight away.
Hey man. great work! sounds just like the original!
is there any way you could upload a screech tutorial? for some reason i cant download your patches from mediafire, and learning how to create this sound would be awesome.
This is really amazing. So far I've been able to recreate everything but the growl (lol, who ever could?) and the screech. I don't own Sylenth but am pretty familiar with it's workings, could you send me a screenshot of your patch so I could work it out in Reason?
Seriously great job man! I'm trying to make dubstep me too and I got Fl studio and no one ever got even close to where you got so I think that with the file you share in the description, I will change to Ableton :)
@poirepoire22 Good to hear you like my remake, but sincerely, don't make your decision on what daw to choose based on this remake. Fl is a great flexible program that is very powerful, imo the UI is a bit cluttered and ableton has a nicer workflow and is awesome for live performance, but anyway just try both before you fully make your mind up.
the growl synth is a little off but no one ive seen or heard has replicated it perfectly... but the syren synth was fuckin DEAD on hahah (high-pitch synth after growl)
@MrMetalman555666 Basically you get around 4 oscs, 3 with saw waves and one with white noise. Detune all three differently, change phases, whatever just to make it sound as brittle, spacious and gnarly. Then add some distortion, bitcrush on a return effect and affect the cutoff envelope using the effects envelope at the bottom left, with short decay for punch and high sustain. Finally pitch bend last with LFO or manually. Use a saw wave for your lfo and make it high speed.
hey man could u possibly make a text tutorial on how to get that screech noise? my sylenth is goin crazy and its unusable. thx if you can dude itd be a big help :) sick patch dude
Wow very good job with this. This is the best skrillex remake I have seen by far. Amazing you even did the dubstep part. Most people don't even attempt that.

@frostedhead Almost anybody who says something along this lines I ask to tell me the ins and out of a single oscillator with a simple ASDR and a mini effects unit built in the soft synth... None of them can tell me without going to google to look it up.. By then they realize that a LOT of the shiny buttons, knobs, and sliders on the soft synth are a lot more complicated and harder to understand than learning to play an instrument. Im a music major.. I would know..
hey could you PLEASE send me that screech synth you're the only one who actually has it. my email is jack@netbug.us or maybe you could just put it on mediafire
That's not your growl patch, sir. Malleusdub did that, and released his patches as a thank you for the subscribers. Not only did you copy his patch, but you copied his method of releasing the patches. Shame.
@Xreeds Furthermore I have used Reason4.0 and I am very comfortable with its synthesis, if you listened a bit more you'd see that malleus did a better job than i did because when applying scream distortion i somehow cancelled out the lower end of the bass. I sir am offended
this probably close to one of the best recreations of the songs bass and the synth that bends up during the chorus is spot on, is it possible to recreate the dub growl with massive and lots of processing?
@zaboyification Yes, whilst skrillex uses resampling, you can get this effect with Massive's formant filter 'scream' and formant wave, I think its called 'modern talking' plus use a scream filter, and alot of amp emulation/distortion, do not use bitcrushing as others suggest but a dedicated distortion unit; (I used Reason's 'Scream'). You also have to automate the wt position of the vocal synth while you pitch bend to get the growl.
It sounds like the real song, but put a speaker thats playing the original in a cardboard box, build a wooden box around that box, then pour cement all over the wooden box, and throw that cement box into the ocean. and youll have this, lol the basses sound spot on actually, but just like that ^
@CVholik Yes, the screen recorder is awfull and only exported audio to 160kbps and a fps of 15 i think. Ableton is perhaps the best DAW i've worked with.
@CVholik No, we rarely make dubstep, althought we might start just because of its current popular appeal. You can look at our stuff on @soundcloud(dot)com/cosmoandpaat
Wow nice job!

this probably close to one of the best recreations of the songs bass and the synth that bends up during the chorus is spot on, is it possible to recreate the dub growl with massive and lots of processing?
zaboyification 8 months ago
@zaboyification Yes, whilst skrillex uses resampling, you can get this effect with Massive's formant filter 'scream' and formant wave, I think its called 'modern talking' plus use a scream filter, and alot of amp emulation/distortion, do not use bitcrushing as others suggest but a dedicated distortion unit; (I used Reason's 'Scream'). You also have to automate the wt position of the vocal synth while you pitch bend to get the growl.

@CosmoandPaat thanks man, also i read somewhere that skrillex specifically used fm8 to get the growl sound

It sounds like the real song, but put a speaker thats playing the original in a cardboard box, build a wooden box around that box, then pour cement all over the wooden box, and throw that cement box into the ocean. and youll have this, lol the basses sound spot on actually, but just like that ^

@CosmoandPaat are you talking about screen recorder? Cause ableton is a great DAW
CVholik 8 months ago
@CVholik Yes, the screen recorder is awfull and only exported audio to 160kbps and a fps of 15 i think. Ableton is perhaps the best DAW i've worked with.

@CosmoandPaat oh i see, are you on dubstep forum? do you make much dubstep?
CVholik 8 months ago
@CVholik No, we rarely make dubstep, althought we might start just because of its current popular appeal. You can look at our stuff on @soundcloud(dot)com/cosmoandpaat

@StonedBlackOps how so id say its synths are pretty similar and the melody, bass has been copied perfectly....??????
Xreeds 8 months ago
@Xreeds I'd say the melody synth is pretty darn close! Overall the sound needs work, but that synth is impressive :O
