Yes, these days Van Diemen’s Land is called Tasmania. It was ‘discovered’ by a Dutchman, which is how it came by the first name – Van Diemen’s Land. The name was changed to try and shake the reputation the place had as a convict colony.
I think Abel Tasman is the one who discovered the place, and gave this island its name.
Thomas Mahr was to Van Diemen's Land by the British, he later escaped to the United states where he became popular in Fenian politics and commanded the Irish Brigade in the US Civil War.
Francis Thomas Mahr was to Van Diemen's Land by the British, he later escaped to the United states where he became popular in Fenian politics and commanded the Irish Brigade in the US Civil War.
@AmericanCWOVI I believe you're correct. I couldn't recall exactly where he lost his life. Sad to have survived the hard times in Australia, The Civil War and lose his lfe in a river. He was a patriot's patriot.
Hahah< thanks for the best place in the world to live... it's peaceful, unpopulated , with the freshest, most abundant seafood stocks in the world... with all the technology the world has to offer...the crims should've stayed! Hehehe oh well we'll just have to live it up. Cheers to the demons!
You can get a ferry from the mainland to Tassie (aussie slang 4 Tasmania..der).Just imagine comin in a convict ship..so bad. When they got there they had 2 pull the ploughs as they were short of horses. They could earn thier freedom and some families followed their loved ones over. Many lovely bridges and buildings r preserved that the convict craftsmen built, they r not forgoten.
When Australia was britains prison,Tasmania was the equivelent of solitary confinement where the worst of the worst criminals were sent. Murderers ,rapists ,rebels and famously anyone convicted of homsexuality were sent there. Thats why tasmanians have a rep of being a breed onto themselves.
The worst of the worst criminals were the ones that brought them there in the first place, when all u had to do was steal a loaf of bread in London, and having red hair was a stigma enough to be dragged away to down under.. Sory if that sounds a bit blunt. "But the robes and wiggs, they stole our kidds, for any reason at all, a chain and ball, just to build the fackers empire..
And the best about it is..you can't get into Austrailia now even if YOU fought against the english for Irish freedom and against the english that deported them there...they the Austrailian's now say that freedom fighters are now criminals...HYPOCRITES.
I have two convicts in my heritage. Both deserved to be sent down, a thief and vagrant sent for seven years to Tasmania in 1832. The other was an incorriagible rapist, sent to Western Australia for life. Have a look at a convict transport and look at the crimes committed. Not many were sent for stealing a loaf of bread - that is a major misnomber.
Unfortuantely for the Irish, sedition was seen as high treason, and ergo life sentences were passed.
I can assure that, although us mainlanders may not like to admit it, Tasmania is definitely a State of Australia. It is an island, but is a state of its own.
Just a question Good People,
So, Van Diemen's land is a place in Tasmania, Australia? There is also a a place called Diemen in Holland, close to Amsterdam.
Did Abel Tasman gave this name? Have a nice day, enjoy the beautiful music, jekke1980
