That "hu" is pronounced by opening your mouth just the slightest bit and pushing air quickly through your lips. It's how the Japanese basically pronounce "F".

They don't strictly have an "F". The closest they have is "H". To mimic "F", they will use the "Hu" Katakana character, and follow it with a small version of either "A", "E", "I", or "O" for "Fa", Fe", "Fi", or "Fo". Naturally, "Fu" is just "Hu", and whether it's "Fu" or "Hu" depends on context.

I know what you mean, man. If there's one thing I've learned taking Chinese and Japanese, it's that context-on-the-fly is a sizable part of it. Hahaha. And adding a "U" would be a good idea, I agree, but then, depending on the size of it (which is relative), it would be unclear if it was indicating a long "U" sound, which they do, as I'm sure you know.

It's been a long while since I last looked at the symbol charts (or any Japanese for that matter), but I think another of doing it sometimes involves little "shi" or little "tsu". Personally, I think it'd all be easier if the added 5 new symbols for fa fi fu fe fo or switched entirely to an english like character set for greater flexibility. Not that that that'd ever happen, would probably cause more problems then it'd solve :P
