Just to present the other side of things, everyone talks about how horrible China is with human rights which they are but Tibet was no better.
It was a country that was completely run by a very small number of landed gentry that virtually held the population in a form of serfdom inherently familiar with the Age of Feudalism in Europe.
Buddhism there is used as a form of control in the same way as most other religions have been used.
These meetings are purely political.

I was present at a teaching of HH 14th Dali Lama in Memphis, TN last Fall. It was a small personal audience. Any country, or person who is afraid of HH is not doing the right thing. China has always kept it's people oppressed. China is uses slave labor. America has kept China in contracts for labor intensive goods, but they acts very much like the old Communist China. If America would have kept the jobs here, and some sent the rest South we would not have a boarder issue we have now.
