I am discovering this piece for the first time this summer. It is quickly surpassing Rite of Spring in terms of its importance for me. So much future in Ives. It will take yet another century to digest and develop his ideas. I feel so close to this piece, and lose myself within it.
I can't help but wonder about the orchestration, which seems very 'dated' from the time of its reconstruction - I like the palette, but wonder if Ives would have used all the malletphones, etc. we hear in this version. Too a number of degrees, it sounds very influenced by the minimalist 'default registration.'
Still, lovely to hear. The music, played in the open as planned, with all added sounds of nature and variables of breeze or wind taking the sound - tantalizing.
@MuseDuCafe Have you looked into Reinhard's project of bringing this work together? Very interesting. Lots of decisions to make, and Reinhard has been very candid. Ives was very specific in terms of instrumentation as well as tuning and many other details.
This is hard to believe that, at least, a partial performance of it has been recorded. Of course, it would be so wonderfull to have a verions with 4 orchestras distributed on the wooded slopes of a valley with a singing river and a vivid forest to mix up their sonic volume and rythm and a system of echoes, but to have yet a concert version is already a great event. Excellent text of presentation which is required since this almost conceptual music is very much demanding for the new listener.

Aah, the universe symphony.
A fond memory. This was something I heard when I was still a modern music newbie. Quite a remarkable experience
