Does anybody know why Karajan never recorded Sibelius 3? With the BPO and the VPO he recorded many Sibelius symphonies, from 1 to 7 but never the Third. Why was that?
@malgray2 I agree...I wish cycle had been recorded for CD and DVD. I think it's time the orchestra did it's own label for CD and maybe DVD. EMI does not seem to have an interest in really documenting the orchestra (or so it appears), and if that's the case, then time to leave and do what the Concertgebouw has done. Time for a BPO label.
@BrucknerMotet absolutely sublime! but i still like this recording a bit better and in my opinion sibelius isn't as perfect for bernstein as others... i see his area more in beethoven, brahms and bruckner!
To whomever as the power to get to the recording company or Maestro Rattle, PLEASE ask him to record this cycle of Sibelius syms. This cycle in my opinion is right up there with the Mahler cycle with Abbado and the BPO.
@cykill1000 EMI is dropping the ball. BPO needs it's own label and actually should have started it years ago. So many good projects did not get recorded which is a big same. Peter Grimes for example!!
The Berlin Philharmonic often calls on students of the Orchestra Academy and guest artists to join sections, most often the horn section. Obviously, Stefan Dohr, Sarah Willis, Fergus McWilliam and others aren't in this performance.
Some of the second chair wind players look new and pretty young. Were they letting students play with the orchestra? I played with the Houston Symphony several times when I was at university.
@sutherndudetx They do let students from their academy orchestra play with them. I bet some of them are students. An example that comes to mind is Alpine Symphony with Bychkov. The flute player must have been a student...Blau and Pahud took those concerts off.

Rattle, won't you please release the complete Sibelius symphonies with your new orchestra? This is simply amazing!
Take a close look at Emmanuel Pahud, the stunning principal flute.

This is really a beautifully dynamic and vigorous performance. I wish it was available as a recording.

Now here is real gem of symphony! Its to bad that the the sibelius 3 isn't programmed more often but its very short for a symphony.
sfrenchhorn07 1 year ago 4
@sfrenchhorn07 It's thirty minutes, which isn't too short by any means.... but I agree, it should be performed more often.
