@confusedmatthew I'm going to have to side with you on this, because I initially had high hopes for this movie (as it was released on my birth year, in 1997), but when I first saw it, I had the same opinion as you do now (but for different reasons; you see, I was born autistic, and because I was sensitive to the drama in this film, that's why I hated it as much as you do).

Because as we watch a beautiful romance unfold with sensational performances we all know exactly what happens to the ship and the people they love around them, it left such a lump in my throat as the central characters got closer. Gave an insight into the loss people suffered on that ship, so yes it does show the tragic historic facts about the sinking.Fact is on that ship the men stayed behind to die for their lover
They have to Base the Film AROUND someone to fill in the blanks otherwise you would be just waiting around for the Boat to Crash watching a load of people walk around !
I didn't care for the movie the history of the real Titanic was sadder and more tragic. At least this could of been a historical fiction without being overly fictitious, still I really never liked this movie.
James Cameron is big bucks for crappy plot movies. Stop paying attention to visuals or romance mumbo jumbo and focus on plot and character development then you will understand.
i absolutley love this film, but i do agree wholeheartedly with what you're saying that this wasn't really about titanic and that the titanic sinking was used as a plot convenience so the lovers could be tragically separated. my only complaint tho is at 3:50, don't you think thats reading a bit too much into it and twisting that to make it sound more far fetched than it is?

U failed 2 mention the biggest blunder in the movie the very luv story itself!! In the real Titanic Rose and Jack would never had even met!! He was from steerage and she was from 1st class. The rigid class system of the times would have prohibited steerage passengers mingling with 1st class passengers. They should have had Jack winning some lottery and gettin a 2nd class ticket @ the very least!! haha

Sometimes I really like what you say. With Titanic you hit it out the ball park. But you left out commenting on the bad dialog and modern slang in the film. And don't forget the hero telling his girl to first practice with the ax AS HE's DROWNING!
Matthew, your notion that the title has nothing to do with the real Titanic is totally preposterous. The REAL Titanic is an even in which a ship on its maiden voyage hits an iceberg and sinks killing over a thousand people. That premise is exactly the same as what happened in James Cameron's Titanic. Cameron did in fact ADD a fictional story, but he never actually changed the sinking event itself.
At least Titanic is NOT on the Imdb top 250, which although full of overrated schlock and comicbook movies nobody will take seriously in a decade or so, still provides an insight into the popular vote of the common and simple people out there.
I was also glad it made the top list of most overrated movies in a well respected British magazine some years back.

Molly Brown wanted to be known as having a humorous heart even in tragedy so thats why she was depicted that way. You do see that the third class was locked in the lower decks because the first class always came first. The love story was real. You do see that the crew wasnt allowed to leave. Titanic is about all thing that happend that night. The love story just helped people relate. Don't hate something because you dont understand all of the directors points.
So obviously you don't know that "Jack and Rose" was a really story of two lovers on board. That the musicians on the deck that play Nearer My God To Thee doesn't show the crew just doing their job...Wow you are so over looking the whole love story thing I think look past that next time you watch.

The effects were great, the acting and story blew, though I thought the villain was kind of funny. It was overlong in an attempt to be epic.
They used a love interest because James Cameron is smart and he knows what kind of films make bank. It has nothing to do with the quality of the film, a blockbuster like this has to make good business sense.

To be fair, Titanic never got any nominations for writing, rightfully so. I really liked it because of the unbelievably high production values, meaning visual effects, art style, and set design. Even the acting is respectable.

@TheRoflknif Avatar is very pretty, probably the best effects i have ever seen in a movie. But both the titanic and avatar have stories that have been told a thousand times over, just prettier. The stories are not that bad per se, they've just lost the charm when you see them for the 30th time. And the romance isn't really deep, it's extremely cheesy. It didn't make me cry because the romance was so wooden and poorly acted, take away the music and you get 2 people smiling like retards.

Arguably the best movie ever made- highest grossing only now has been topped by another James Cameron film, if it were any different or more like Zodiac or Apollo 13 would it have had the same results? i agree that the real life characters like Molly Brown shoud've had more time to shine, but over all the love story was GOOD. The heroic acts of the real historical figures were mentioned. Molly Brown did tell the life boat she was on to turn around and get more passengers. Because of this, many lives were saved. It is in the film. Thomas Andrew's heroic acts were also brought to attention. He went around handing out life jackets and telling people to get to boats. They showed the Captain going down with the ship.

Titanic is an AMAZING movie. You have no idea what you are talking about. First and foremost, you said that the title had nothing to do with the movie. But, clearly it does? The film is based around the sinking of Titanic. That is the setting. It would not be the same if you placed it elsewhere because A) the boat wouldn't sink because there wouldn't be a boat, B) Jack wouldn't have been able to drown (no water) and C) there would be no first class and third class struggle between...
the movie was amazing, a masterpiece in film history, yeah it went off the real story and focused on the love between jack and rose but either way, they showed both. The love between jack and rose is something that couldn't just be ignored, its an amazing, touching love story of two on a very tragic time in their lives, its beautiful, I love the movie and wouldnt change it ONE BIT. You cant please everybody, but you can please most people, thats what titanic did.

Actually, you wouldn't be able to transplant the plot to any time period. A whole aspect of their relationship is they can't be together because of their different social class status. Also, it wouldn't be a tragedy in the 90's - they would have had enough life boats. And please tell me where they kept a car to have sex in on the Hindenburg. You missed the point of the film completely. You watched it blankly - with cynical asshole intent.
@johnnypink312 having sex in a car is a trivial plot point. it doesn't have to be in a car, and they don't even have to have sex. the general plot theme is a nice girl who is getting married to an asshole, but she wants to be with a nice guy instead. and that could certainly be transplanted into any other tragedy. the minor details would be different, but it would still be the same general story.
@33LB You could do that with any movie. You can always take any movie's plot and transplant it into a different situation. The point of creating such an emotional connection between character's was so in the end the audience could connect and feel the tragedy of the Titanic wreck. Point is - it wouldn't have been the epic success it was if it wasn't the movie it was. It was all planned out nicely - sure the script was a bit weak, but all films have flaws.

And no, every person I have ever spoken to, yes has cried over Jack (which was used as a way for people to feel emotionally connected to the wreck, as a way for the audience to feel as if they had lost someone personally on the ship) but they start crying even before that, with the thousands of dead bodies, including the Irish mother and her children who perished and the dead baby in the sea, etc.

It's basically all that matters for two hours of the film. You obviously don't get the emotional connection. And it's not ever going to be given another title, because it's about the Titanic, it's called Titanic and will always be, with 11 Oscars awarded to that name. Whatever I'm done, have fun watching Avatar instead. Which actually sucked.

They were good at setting the film at the times, and the sinking scene was done well.
The romance was utter shit though.

U failed 2 mention the biggest blunder in the movie the very luv story itself!! In the real Titanic Rose and Jack would never had even met!! He was from steerage and she was from 1st class. The rigid class system of the times would have prohibited steerage passengers mingling with 1st class passengers. They should have had Jack winning some lottery and gettin a 2nd class ticket @ the very least!! haha

Matthew, your notion that the title has nothing to do with the real Titanic is totally preposterous. The REAL Titanic is an even in which a ship on its maiden voyage hits an iceberg and sinks killing over a thousand people. That premise is exactly the same as what happened in James Cameron's Titanic. Cameron did in fact ADD a fictional story, but he never actually changed the sinking event itself.

At least Titanic is NOT on the Imdb top 250, which although full of overrated schlock and comicbook movies nobody will take seriously in a decade or so, still provides an insight into the popular vote of the common and simple people out there.
I was also glad it made the top list of most overrated movies in a well respected British magazine some years back.

Molly Brown wanted to be known as having a humorous heart even in tragedy so thats why she was depicted that way. You do see that the third class was locked in the lower decks because the first class always came first. The love story was real. You do see that the crew wasnt allowed to leave. Titanic is about all thing that happend that night. The love story just helped people relate. Don't hate something because you dont understand all of the directors points.

The effects were great, the acting and story blew, though I thought the villain was kind of funny. It was overlong in an attempt to be epic.
They used a love interest because James Cameron is smart and he knows what kind of films make bank. It has nothing to do with the quality of the film, a blockbuster like this has to make good business sense.

The stories are not that bad per se, they've just lost the charm when you see them for the 30th time. And the romance isn't really deep, it's extremely cheesy. It didn't make me cry because the romance was so wooden and poorly acted, take away the music and you get 2 people smiling like retards.

Arguably the best movie ever made- highest grossing only now has been topped by another James Cameron film, if it were any different or more like Zodiac or Apollo 13 would it have had the same results? i agree that the real life characters like Molly Brown shoud've had more time to shine, but over all the love story was GOOD. Also it's not like the history of Titanic was ignored, it shows many facts about how the titanic sunk and such in the modern anachronistic view.

The heroic acts of the real historical figures were mentioned. Molly Brown did tell the life boat she was on to turn around and get more passengers. Because of this, many lives were saved. It is in the film. Thomas Andrew's heroic acts were also brought to attention. He went around handing out life jackets and telling people to get to boats. They showed the Captain going down with the ship.
In my opinion, Titanic is the greatest movie of all time!

The film is based around the sinking of Titanic. That is the setting. It would not be the same if you placed it elsewhere because A) the boat wouldn't sink because there wouldn't be a boat, B) Jack wouldn't have been able to drown (no water) and C) there would be no first class and third class struggle between...

The love between jack and rose is something that couldn't just be ignored, its an amazing, touching love story of two on a very tragic time in their lives, its beautiful, I love the movie and wouldnt change it ONE BIT. You cant please everybody, but you can please most people, thats what titanic did.

The point of creating such an emotional connection between character's was so in the end the audience could connect and feel the tragedy of the Titanic wreck. Point is - it wouldn't have been the epic success it was if it wasn't the movie it was. It was all planned out nicely - sure the script was a bit weak, but all films have flaws.

And no, every person I have ever spoken to, yes has cried over Jack (which was used as a way for people to feel emotionally connected to the wreck, as a way for the audience to feel as if they had lost someone personally on the ship) but they start crying even before that, with the thousands of dead bodies, including the Irish mother and her children who perished and the dead baby in the sea, etc.

@johnnypink312 good one. there was what, one reference to belfast in the entire film, and little mention of the heroes who kept electricity etc. functioning as the boat was sinking. i didnt say it should be given another title, but rather, should not have been named titanic in the first place.

ok u r a terrible reviewer. u jsut bitch for a min about the title of the movie, out of the 6 and a half mins of ur review. That means thats about 20% of ur review that talked abotu the title, which gives me the impression thats one of ur biggest complaint, not the acting, not the setting, cinematography, style, or music score, no its was on the title and how accurate it was to the reall event. WOW Math. Its a fifctional story based off an event, so wat if it doesnt depict exactly wat happens.

How can anybody dislike this film it was amazing and ground breaking when it came out i suppose this matt guy can never be pleased with anything i cant imgiane him enjoying any good film and the film is not suppose to be based on every single detail for gods sake like he could make a better film yeah lets see that.

They fall in love, fuck, (All in a matter of a couple days) one of them dies 'cose there's only one convenient floating chunk of wood (apparently, a giant ship only leaves behind one) and the bitch drops something a guy really wants for no reason. They should have just called this movie, "Love, Fuck, Die, in one week".

@YoseMiteEmery The story of Jack and Rose was amazing? It was Romeo and Juliet set in the early 20th century. Thats about it. The characters are completely one-dimensional and the love story is cliché beyond belief. How people got suckered into thinking this movie is great is baffling

@zzyzx0788 I don't need to, thats all people complain about, how the story is like Romeo and Juliet, get over it... the story between them are very different... I watch a lot of romantic movies and none have stuck with me more... and I can bet, millions agree with me, Cameron is brilliant

This movie's love story was mediocre and cliche as hell, get over it. It felt more important because the ship was going down, thats the only reason you cared. This movie is beyond overrated.

and what movie isn't cliche? honestly... everything is taken from other ideas.. there are no original ideas in movies anymore. its the writers or directors own take on that idea which make it good.

He just said he believes the ship will sink, nothing much. Everyone will say that on the ship. How is that an "evil plot"?
