Sometimes, if not every time, the music makes the game.. I mean, the graphics and story can be great, but when I think back on games i've played, it's usually the music I remember :)
This was *THE* computer game when i was a kid. I remember the first thing I did when my dad upgraded and gave me his 286 was play DUNE. even on a 286 with no sound card and only 1024kb of extended ram it was an awesome game!
Does anyone know how the graphics for this kind of games were made? Was it painted pixel by pixel or was some kind of 3D-modeling program used? Did Photoshop existed at the time?
I had a HELP demo of this :) only worked a few times tho, preferred Harkonnens myself. Worms pissed me off oh happy memories tho sound on pc at the time non existent 4 me :P
This and Warcraft 2 were the first RTS games I played. I played Dune 2 in '96 though, but little did I know was that I played the first ever modern RTS game. =)
Hey everybody - I just released my solo album "Mirror Image" that contains electronic upbeat and ambient songs inspired by the music of Frank Klepacki and the Dune video game series. If you're interested you can check out the songs on my youtube page, and links to my myspace page and places to download the full album are on my youtube channel as well :) .
It's amazing that when she says "Your battle for Dune begins...now....", you used to be, "OMG Yes. WOW"... but 20 years later you're kinda like ,"Meh.. yeah. whatever"
the true pioneer of the RTS genre. this is practically the blueprint for EVERY single RTS game ever created since. Starcraft, Warcraft, WoW, Command and Conquer would not EVEN EXIST if it weren't for this game (well, maybe C&C being westwood). consider yourself educated kiddies.
What was this music played on? It's certainly not the horrible FM synthesis from the Adlibs and Soundblasters of the day, and it's definitely not the MT-32 I was fortunate enough to play on.... Did Dune II have a General MIDI option?
What was this music played on? It's certainly not the horrible FM synthesis from the Adlibs and Soundblasters of the day, and it's definitely not the MT-32 I was fortunate enough to play on.... Did Dune II have a General MIDI option?
Well, that is what I call Dune 2 music, it sounded exactly the same on my computer when I was young... I found many videos with music for Dune 2 that sounds slightly different and were not exactly what I was looking for. I also miss the PC speaker version there, but never mind :-)
What is really fascinating about the games of old, that they were really HARD to beat.... (I doubt that today's average gamer kid would last to level 6 of this)
Oh my God this game was so great and might still be if I ever got a computer that's mine again. It was great even when I last had my laptop and running WoW, I'd log off WoW just to play Dune 2.
The PC Speaker music to this game was by far superior to the 16bit songs. I cant find them ANYWHERE online. If someone knows how to get them, at least the game intro with PC speaker mode, let me know! thx
umm to the people who claim this to be the first RTS game: there are actually a number of much older games that meet all the criteria for being labeled a RTS. One I can really recommend to people is called The Ancient Art of War. Thing is, those games just looked much more primitive. But theyre pretty advanced game mechanics wise, compared to games that came much later, including Dune II.
Dune 2 made for Amiga, Warcraft: Orcs and Humans made for PC...as i know for amiga there never made any Multiplayer game...only cooperative games on one machine.
I played it on my Amiga 500 back then, only it had different music, with a special climax and no percussion at all, anyone know what I'm talking about? GREAT game BTW!
Check out Techno softs Herzog(Msx i think) and Herzog Swei(genesis) Those were before but they dont work exactly the same as what this game set the standerd for.
As ZT mentioned, some might argue that some games like Herzog Zwei attempted the concept prior to Dune II, but this game undoubtedly set the template upon which almost every RTS game afterward would be based on.
I still remember playing this for the first time on my 486 DX4 100 and being completely, utterly blown away. Played the game for like 18 hours straight.
"Dune, the building of a dynasty..." is a speech clip that is filled with great memories for a lot of old-schoolers.
@garudoh i also had 486 DX4 100Mhz and dune was my first game that i really loved, remember that first 2 months of playing i didn't know that i could build some structures and such a game style was very difficult :-) and when i by a coincidence built tile i was very excited.
@garudoh man i am from greece and i am 25 years old
so 16 yearrs before i was going to a friend of mine that had a 4 86 computer
and we were playing dune 2 and also other amazing games..my 2 86 wasnt capable enough to play dune 2 so i was going to my friend's..from then i played all dune games i saw dune movie and ive read all the books of course and i am a huge fan of sci fiction and also I HAVE DUNE TATOO... i have to admit that music from frank klepacki did all this to me :P at begining
Technically speaking, I would say Herzog Zwei was the first modern RTS, but it was not very influential (no one knew about it); Dune 2 was far more influential.

If Dune 2 would have been multiplayer like Warcraft 2 it would have really killed blizzard as a company.
War2 was a great RTS but the critical thing about it was that it was the FIRST multiplayer RTS ever.

@Pszichopark
1. Playing on one machine doesn'nt really mean that a game has to be cooperative only. oO
2. There actually were some games capable of network play for the Amiga such as Populous 2.
Btw: The Amiga version of Dune 2 was just a port. Originally Dune 2 was a PC game.
