  • 2 fell down at the end ? your shit.

  • Sephiroth sword...

  • Ain't that a Zanbato?

  • katana with handle from No Dachi?

  • You are supposed to do the 'kiai' just before or during the movement...

    After it is totally useless.

  • @carldrosa i was speaking generally

  • anyone that practices can do that with a Nodachi/Odachi katana

  • @Made1nGreece Oh the ego.

  • ficken O.O das ist ein Grosse Klingen O.O

  • @tech9boarder Freuen uns, dass sie es sehr genossen

  • @tech9boarder Du Abschaum, dreckiger Amerikaner.

  • i feel calling it a daito is sort of underestimating it's length... i believe you're running with the old "daikatana" misinterpretation, just in a new way. reading the kanji right doesn't mean it was the same type of sword as in the game. this is a nodachi which can mean field/plains-fat-sword(at least that's how i read it). a daito means just long-sword usually what you call a normal katana.

  • Thats it?

  • nodachi rulz!!

  • Try it with a katana and without using all of your body weight. i'd cheer for that.

  • @EpicEffinTom ^ This.

  • thats a big ass knife!

  • LoLzz. April 25th is my birthday.. 0_o

  • LoLz.... April 25th is my birthday

  • Looked like he coulda cut way more than that...lols that record musta been broken soon after if not by someone else, then by himself.

  • man i can cut a mountain in half with my sword of omens, thunder cats HOOOO

  • That doesnt look lie a record to me. Other videos on you tube show similiar cuts

  • Whats really ironic is that the Japan Festival is held in America and not Japan XD

  • @KELLERMANisBACK If that is the case, it must really puzzle you why the Japanese host American festivals, play baseball and eat at McDonalds. You must be baffled that Japanese anime is here in America. Cultures share and celebrate each other. That is so foreign to you?

  • @carldrosa Not really that foreign XD being a chinese person in america dreaming of living in Japan XD

  • @KELLERMANisBACK Then I don't understand why you think it is ironic.

  • @KELLERMANisBACK

If it were in Japan, than they would call it only FESTIVAL.

  • @Attilahollo9 No, they wouldn't. I'm in Japan right now and there are four festivals occurring. None are merely called 'Matsuri.'

  • @Attilahollo9 neppon

  • @KELLERMANisBACK All KELLERMANisBACK was proposing was an observation that is quite ironic. The population of Japanese in Japan is over 95%, whereas the population of Japanese in the USA is 0.3% (according to the census bureau), so it would make sense why an international festival would be considered ironic if held in the USA. Likewise it would be ironic if an Indian National Dance competition was held in in Madagascar. Common sense. Not sure why the uploader is really sensitive...

  • @mangomoshi thank you

  • @KELLERMANisBACK even more ironic is its in texas

  • @pipboy1995 that was in the first comment down like 15 comments? >>>

  • @KELLERMANisBACK oh? nevermind lol

  • Man I can do that. Here, hold my budwiser........

  • Looks like I got a record to break next year

  • there's a ton of leverage

  • Comment removed

  • Daito? Looks more like a nagamaki.

  • @donbasuradenuevo thats exactly what I was thinknig.. thats no daito

  • Tatami don't cut back.

  • can someone tell me if this is hard...... my friend let me cut a 3 rolled tatami with bamboo core and it gone in one swing... i need a professional to tell me why this is impressive

  • thanks for the information. I still stick with the katana for tamashegiri. but you prove your point.

  • good show. but that's not a katana. tamasheguiris are subject to the table. it is not the traditional test... is my poor opinion of course

  • @ditonguis The title nor the description ever claim it to be a katana. A daito is a cavalry killing sword, or in simple terms, a very big katana. They were used on the battlefield to bring down multiple opponents at the same time or horses. Tameshigiri is not limited to katanas, the word tameshigiri literally means "test cut".

  • gay

  • @CTHULHUCALL If gay is the new word for awesome, you're absolutely correct.

  • hmm....he is very....VERY....Strong to do such achivement.

  • i can do more with my lightsaber

  • yeah well my max on fruit ninja is like 350 no big deal or anything

  • um okay.. give me the same sword and add 1 extra bamboo shoot. ill do the same thing LOL

  • Comment removed

  • @arvbur09 Regrettably, the word 'Cheeting' doesn't exist.

  • lol, cool, but the cheering at the end sounded like nothing as much as a herd of cows. Must have been longhorns, being Texas.

  • The Japan-America Society Of Houston, because nothing is scarier than a Texan with a katana.

  • @USSRman45 Nothing is scarier than a Texan with a humungous katana--SCREAMING THE REBEL YELL!!!

... other than a Satsuma Samurai with a humungous katana--ALSO SCREAMING THEIR REBEL YELL!!!

Ever notice that both Texas and Satsuma are the southernmost of their respective countries?

  • Une telle lame, c'est pour couper en deux un cheval ?

  • Why would this have so many dislikes?

  • the cheering in slow motion was my favorite part

  • the katana is a nodachi no katana

  • serious question - who made that sword?

    thanks,

    Kevin

  • @colwellk2

i believe angelsword made that one

  • where is zanshin?

  • machii isao could beat him :)

  • the sword is priced at $15,000.00 at the texas rennassance fair. the craftman of the sword sells it there.

  • world record....... word record my ass

  • @amessenger4god78 you must have a very talented ass :)

  • An additional take from the front would've been awesome, but apart from that: WOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW!!!!!! That was incredible.

  • psh, stupid Americans. My fellow iado students and I can do that in our sleep.

  • @softndsmooth ok awesome, u didn't have to dis a whole country tho

  • Zombie Cows 0:44

  • i dont see any japanese master here O.O

  • this is stupid.

  • omggg what a hackerrrrrr xD jks

  • what kind of katana is that?

  • this is fkin impossible he cheated

  • Easier with Nodachi, if you have a basic grasp on physics, you'd know in a contained environment, bigger is better. Also the force applied behind, and lots of other factors.

  • I can do 5 singles with a katana but the last one isn't clean at all T.T

  • I will say very impressive especially using a nodachi. they are very hard to wield and cutting 25 tatami just amazing. now using a katana....i have yet to see someone cut more than 8 singles

  • Daito is a anti horse sword isnt it? or is the one am talking about heavier and impossible to carry by yourself?

  • The longer handle gives him more power/torque, I don't think this should count if all the other people were using katanas. It's ok if this is just the daito world record.

  • OMG I was there it was awesome xD

  • Wow cool stuff. I made a knife and theres a video on my channel. Where I hack a 2x4 in half, and then shave myself with it to show it holds a razors edge. Look at "FINALVIDEO" on my channel.

Sorry to seem like a troll. COol video./

  • I am no expert just an humble nobody on the path, but that was awesome. The training and time he has put into his art is obvious and most impressive. Thank you for posting this video, I am inspired anew.

  • Slow motion sound like a bunch of wolfs howling :P

  • check a "real samurai" from Japan who really got a talent in cutting things.

he's name is "Isao Machii "

  • I can cut a rug... on the dancefloor, baby! Oooo, yeah!

  • I reckon he could have made it a through a few more mats. Secondly that sword does NOT weigh 35lbs, not to say that I've held it but through some simple maths you can determine that 35lbs is almost an order of magnitude out. Assume that the blade (tang included) was 170cm long, 0.5cm thick and 3.5cm wide. Now multiply it all together to give you 297.5. Now multiply that by the density of iron (7.874g/cm cubed) and you get 2342.5 grams. Convert that to pounds and you get about 5.16lbs.

  • @potheadpenguin Then to take into account fthe rest of the sword and the weight might go up to about 6lbs.

  • carldrosa i have a question which can only be answered by pros of tameshigiri. have you heard of the new L6 Bainaite steel katana? Apparantly they are now the strongest type of katana in the world, my question isnt about strength though, its about cutting power. Do you know or have you heard of anyone using one of these babies in a tameshigiri demonstration? and if so, would they be ideal if you could afford them?

  • @SuperSimba6 L6 Bainite is nothing more than a tool steel, popularly used in bandsaws. Its very tough (when treated properly, has excellent ductility (one of the flaws of most high speed tool steels) and decent hardness, but is apparently difficult to heat treat properly, explaining its lack of popularity amongst bladesmiths. The steel itself is not incredibly expensive, the high price tag on L6 katanas has a lot to due with the difficulty of the forging, heat treating, and grinding processes.

  • @SuperSimba6 While I am no tameshigiri expert, I do a lot of cutting competitions, and have dabbled in bladesmithing. When it comes to cutting competition, a good performance steel depends on the cutting medium. With low density cutting mediums like tatami mats, a steel with a fine grain structure (yielding a finer edge), and uniform martensite composition is most desirable, even when toughness and ductility are sacrificed; since L6 is non powdered tool steel, the edge can only be so fine.

  • @RebelWrestler45 thanks so its not imperative to get a l6 sword for 11k when i can get a decent powedered steel blade for around 1k.

  • @SuperSimba6 Exactly, Paul Chen has a few powdered steel katanas (also sells L6 for around $1,000), just stay away from anything that says 'tamahagane', as said steel is non uniform in composition, brittle, and does not have a fine grain structure. While I do think his katanas are overpriced for what you get, they are apparently authentic in appearance; if you just want a good sword to cut with, you don't need anything more than a properly heat treated 1055 or 1060 carbon; look to Cold Steel.

  • 1) Thats not a Daitō but an Ōdachi, or even a Zanbatō. Probably highly stylized.

    2) Its not 35lbs in weight, nowhere near. A "sword" like that weights about 4-6lbs.

    3) This is so utterly pointless (the "record"), so typical for Americans.

  • @Buuub08 So typical for Americans...because making fun of Americans is the cool thing to do, right?

  • Why do people think 35lb is so heavy? Seriously? Its not.

  • thats a sword? ...thats something id almost call a polarm. or a nodachi or a nagamaki.

SOO much more leverage than a normal daito (bydaito i mean a standard nihontou)

that handdle seems longer than most normal daito blades.

of course im not saying this isnt impressive, i doubt id just be able to pick it up and make that cut, no way in hell. that attained level of skill i recognise and respect.

  • XXwes997xx if you read my whole post you will see that i compare it to a similar AS piece that is just under 4 pounds. I will check out that real buster sword for the novelty.

  • great cut! those mats are hard to cut when bunched up like that. ive only cut 6 myself. 25 is amazing its way harder than the video would imply

  • I personally held this blade the week before the cut, I will attest to the fact that it is no where near 35lbs, I'm not sure of its exact weight but it defiantly under 10 lbs. A similar sized Avatar No Dachi is listed on the AS website at 3lbs 15oz.

  • @clouku87 when your talking 35 pounds for a sword. see a video called real buster sword. this guy forges a 35 pound sword. its about 10 inches wide and almost 6 feet long. so that daito is nowhere near 35 pounds...i agree it could be heavy, but i have a simmilar blade with a shorter handle and it is just over 4 pounds.

  • @clouku87 Agreed. I did tameshigiri for years and had the privilege of handling Daniel Watson's steel on a number of occasions. He would laugh himself hoarse if he found out there was some blowhard jackass on YouTube insisting that an AS Warlord nod weighs 35 lbs.

The biggest, heaviest sword I've ever handled in my entire life was an antique ceremonial Zweihander that weighed almost 13 lbs. It was utterly unwieldy in every sense of the word, far too heavy for combat and never intended for it.

  • this guy is very strong indeed, but i really think he would not be able to perform a 1 roll tameshigiri with appropriate grace and beauty. what i mean? nothing but the difference between the application of strenght and the real martial art...if you want a great awsome tameshigiri then watch Machii Isao's ones, who can cut fruits, plants, flowers, gun's bullets, michroscopic mushrooms with absolute precision, speed and balance

  • WAY cool man!

    THAT is one DIFFICULT cut!

Anyone who thinks this is easy should just attempt it and post the video. If it's just that easy, show us YOU really know what are talking about! You can do it! Right?

I have done some test cutting on hard targets. There is a video of me cutting down a tree with my katana on my youtube profile. That took VERY little skill compared to this.

    How swift your sword!

    D

  • lol the festival is showing it off like its the place to be, go to a sushi bar and watch someone cut my food fk off

  • halfassedfart, you are a crude and pointless person. I won't stoop to your level. You are blocked. congrats

  • shut up fag, who gives a shit about technical form and who recognizes what. the guy still did it and it's pretty damn cool. stop being butthurt that some white guy from texas did something no japanese guy has ever done with one of their own weapons. you're a whiny bitch.

  • The reason why they repeat that it's a world record over and over is because the Japanese don't recognise it. I can tell you with absolute certainty that Bruce is not trained with that variety of nodaichi because it's school's are scarce even in Japan. He lacked the form appropriate to proper combat. It doesn't matter how hard he swings, it's a futile cut.

This whole record is a load, there are no rules and anything seems to be allowed so long as a person swings the blade.

  • The news worlds record is a completed cut of 25 tatami mats. The Japanese most certainly recognize world records. We invite you to visit the festival this year and inform the Consul General of Japan (who attends each year and supervised the cut) that you have a stronger understanding than him. The entire process was videotaped, authenticated and recorded. We invite your expertise and will make arrangements for you to meet with dignitaries. I will find it interesting.

  • @carldrosa Can I meet them? I dont want to ask any questions. I just want to sit at the VIP table with all the old guys.

    ;)

  • shut up fag, who gives a shit about technical form and who recognizes what. the guy still did it and it's pretty damn cool. stop being butthurt that some white guy from texas did something no japanese guy has ever done with one of their own weapons. you're a whiny bitch.

  • There's not much point to this, is there? A slow, telegraphed windup like that is of no use in combat unless you're trying to finish off an unconscious foe.

  • Are you kidding me? What's the point of someone sky diving? What's the point of having a fast car? What's the point of skateboarding? It shows he has talent but most of all it's just good fun. You really think most of the people practicing swordsmanship actually use their knowledge in a battle? Hell no.

  • Miss the point much? Studying martial arts is about preserving and understanding the techniques and philosophies as they were applied. This is just prickwaving.

  • @halfassedfart

Miss the point much? Budo means different things to different people. To me, Budo is all about self improvement and martial skill. One thing is sure. You, sir are no Budoka. My guess is you've never stepped foot in a dojo. You are a 'sword enthusiast' with a wallhanger fetish.

Real Martial Artists DO Martial Arts. They don't post pseudo-philosophical tripe designed to poop on the REAL accomplishments of others.

It's time to crawl back to your mother's basement!

    That is all.

  • You're right. In fact, it's exceedingly easy. Hold a 35 lbs daito and keeping the sword absolutely level whle you cut through 25 roled tatami mats is one of the easiest things you can do in your life. In fact, he successfully completed this cut once out of 5 attempts for the festival. You're right. It is as easy as walking through a door.

  • @carldrosa I don't think that sword weighs 35 lbs.

  • @ButtPoopWiggle. OK. Well, thanks for your uneducated opinion.

  • @carldrosa No need for the attitude. I own an Angel Sword, and have held many of Daniel's pieces. I haven't seen or held anything like this however, which would explain my ignorance of it's weight. I was always impressed with the balance, and astonished at the lightness of many of his blades, so 35lbs just sounded like an awful lot to me.

You could've just said "Trust me, it does."

  • @ButtPoopWiggle - Read the continual comments from people who repeatedly whine about the lack of authenticity or apparent ease of this cut. Everyone's an expert and yet no one has done it. Very rarely does 'Trust me' work on these boards. The comment stands. If my commment is offensive, I do apologize....but it's unbelievably rare for someone to compliment the feat. There is always skepticism without anything to back it up with.

  • @carldrosa Well, I absolutely agree with you there. An awful lot of people seem to think this no big deal, or that his form is incorrect, or whatever. I on the other hand think it's amazing. I never said the cut wasn't impressive, it is. I don't know enough about technique to comment on his form at all, and it seems irrelevant to do so when watching footage like this. He made the cut, and those who criticize him can't come close to doing something like this so they should shut it, end of story.

  • @ButtPoopWiggle You should have stuck with yopur earlier opinion. a 35 lbs sword? 35 lbs is awfully heavy, fucking sledge hammers don't werigh that much, not the average size ones any way. 35 lbs???? hope it's not a combat sword.

  • @keem31 Dude I know, right? I would still like to hold the blade in person for sure, but the guy who uploaded the video assures me it's 35lbs...

  • @ButtPoopWiggle lightness doesnt mean good. With a blade of ANY kind, heavy means quality.

  • @ButtPoopWiggle have you handled an actual sword? Not some piece of junk you buy for show, but an actual battle ready sword? Obviously not.

  • @SUP3RZ0MB1E Actually, I own a Bright Knight rapier by Angelsword. Also, a heavy blade does not, as you say, always mean the blade is of high quality. I have a junk katana as well, and it's much, much heavier than my rapier. Of course, it's a different style of sword, but you see my point. The junk katana is just as heavy as a 'real' one, but it's a piece of shit.

  • @carldrosa it would be alot more impressive if he was cutting with your standard katana rather than some behemoth

  • @EpicEffinTom Makes sense. More than fine with me. Everyone who hasn't completed such a cut is a critic. that's what the YouTube comments are actually for. Next time, before the cutting is attempted, I will contact everyone on Youtube and demand that all of the cutting meets the criteria of every critic. That way, everyone will be happy.

  • @carldrosa that should do the trick, tho some people like bigger swords =/ no win situation

  • The sword in the video is a daito sword, it was used against horses during battle. All of the Tatami mats were rolled tight, soaked in water so that they would be a uniform tightness. As far as Angel Sword only being "for art pieces", they are not. I own several and have cut through woods with them, carved up a parts car, many things. I am sure that other Sword makers will be able to make a blade that someone can cut with. If they have the skill to do so. See you @ JFEST in April. Will be there.

  • The Sword was made to fit Bruce, not to perform heavy cutting competitons with. He stands at 6'6" and is very long in the arms and legs. He designed the handle of that blade to be right at his bench press width. He wanted the blade to "Tear stuff up with" He did.

  • that sword is ment to be used on horses not on human heads

  • my best personal record is 0

  • @TheGooberment damn it! That's more than me!

  • @TheGooberment wow your tied with mine

  • Would that be equivalent or comparable to decapitating 25 human heads?

  • @TempestDust Actually I think it's more like 25 legs cut off at the thigh, but you know...

So the answer to your question is essentially 'yes!' Isn't that crazy to think about?

  • Good form. I'm not trying to take anything away from your accomplishment, but wouldn't it be better to standardize tatami cuts with a specified length and weight sword and a fully rolled target? If not, what's to stop, bigger and bigger swords and further spaced tatamis from being used to break each record set? I, personally, have gotten through a rolled tatami mat, with just a standard practical katana from hanwei. I don't have a daito, but i suspect my cut could have been much bigger.

  • Thanks so much for your comment. If you would like to demonstrate your skills on our stage in 2010, we can make arrangements for you. 20,000 people attend our event, so we welcome the experts to clarify their position. Thanks again for the comment.

  • I see why you replied as you have, my post was incomplete. My personal record is 21 tatami mats, rolled. I'd be happy to demonstrate in 2010. Please post the location and time of events. Thank you.

  • He was probably just remarking upon your comment.

I mean... calling Angel swords he best swords in the world was just a bit fanboyish, no offense.

It's just that, calling a sword good because it can cut through all of those mats is kinda silly, because Bugei, MAS, Hanwei would all make swords that could accomplish the same thing, possibly even easier, Angel sword is more for art pieces, really.

  • Well, they are all welcome to do so! I'm sure any of them would be more than welcome to come down and demonstrate just what their weapons can do.

  • And they HAVE... So stop trying to overhype this crap. Whenever I speak to someone who is so dedicated to Angel sword they are just so pretentious and unwilling to give an actual reason as to why they are such fanboys.

I don't want to continue a conversation with someone that WILL NEVER compromise, nor even see the validity in ones argument, so I'll thank you if we can stop the bickering.

    Thank you,

    Sal

  • If you wish to chat with someone that has Angel Sword pieces and still can see that there are other Sword Smiths that are very capable of performing, I would be one. If you wish to ask any questions I will try to do my best to answer them for you as best as I am able. Jessie B.

  • That sword ain't sharp. It's SHARRRRRRRRP!

  • MASSIVE cut !!!

  • Awesome. Bruce my hat is off to you sir!

  • YEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

    Bruce is my hero!

I wish i could cut tatami half as good as him.

Angel sword, greatest swords in the world.
