People like Reni bear a lot of responsibility for the nazi atrocities. 'Useful idiots' like her helped the nazis capture public imagination and carry out their atrocities. Her hands are covered with as much blood as any Waffen SS murderer.
Triumph of the Will starring a cast of thousands of German corpses. See how excited they are to march to their deaths. Hitler and his Nazi party is the worst thing to ever happen to Germany.
No one knew what was going on in those camps. The truth was found out later. Or the victors truth at least. You think Hitler was like oh by the way Leni my dear I mass murder Jews. No of corse not. Google Hitlers anti Jew speaches, you won't find any. But Stalins Stalinization of eastern Europe where 12 million of my countrymen and women died in Ukraine alone. Which is known and recorded. Fuck who cares about that. Stupid morons, you think you see through propaganda, but you are a victim of it.
She was beyond the shadow of a doubt, one of the greatest film directors of all times. But she was also fated to live in some of the darkest times in world history. Too bad. I wish some one with her talent were alive in our times. Movies would become very interesting again!!!
I expect that your German is fluent. Idiot. You come to watch this historical documentary and all you do is comment on her English? You are thick. Eff off.
Poor gifted woman! She was a great artist but got herself linked to the dictatorship in her country and with its defeat she became somewhat stained by it and her problem is highly connected with the problem of film making itself: Breker could make his sculptures, Schmitt still write his essays but she would never been able to make a film, because no one would give her the financial means to do it. If this would not have happened to her she would be hailed like Kurosawa or Kubrick (at least).
Stalin killed his own people, Hitler killed about 20 million slavs: civilian, children, old men, women, etc, in the camps, along with those slaughtered and burned in their homes. The Germans lost about 10 million as a result of combat, where the Russians lost about 15 million due to combat. Note: the Russian combat deaths are not included with the slaughter of the slavs in the camps and at homeland.
This Anticipatory repudiation 07:46 / 10:00 "the law of contracts that describes a declaration by one party (the promising party) to a contract, that she does not intend to live up to her obligations under the contract." i thought that the crimes against humanity thing was more to do with the whole using concentration camp prisoners as actors rather than making good films was it not? Her films are amazing, but also amazingly German culturally, the place was pretty nationalist at that time, and so that is generally how her subjects are interpreted. But they are also Romantic with the mountains etc. thats a northern European thing.
Good interview! I did not realize that she could speak English; in the film about her made in 1993 she spoke only German, and that was translated in subtitles.
Actually, I notice they played down the welcome of the crowd - in the original film there is a thuderous applause with th music.. I guess they wouldn't allow the Nazis to look too good!
The new Post WWII Guilt driven PC Gestapo in Germany never tolerated her for never appologizing for her actions during the war. So like so many that were haunted for their roles in the Nazi regime she paid the prize until her death for her past. A true shame, it makes the new Germany no better than Hitler's Germany or Communist Germany later.
I would not say that the current Germany is no better than Hitler's Germany or East Germany. It is MUCH better! Still, I agree with you that she did NOT deserve the difficulties that she experienced due to the fact that the side she made movies for lost the war. In later conversations she brought up the fact that the Soviet directors of that same era did not experience the same difficulties as they were on the winner side; albeit with their own tyrant (Marshall Stalin).
Obviously the Nazi regime was a twisted and horrific thing. But Hitler used people and deceived them about his real intent. Especially in the early days.
Leni was an amazing filmmaker. Really incredible. I believe her when she says she was simply trying to make the best films she could. The full scope of Hitler's twisted vision was years off remember.
I appreciate her candidness and honesty.
She admits she would not have made the films had she known.
I'm Studying Riefenstahl at school and she is a very interesting character. You can love and hate her at the same time. She is controversial as a Nazi sympathiser - fascist aesthetic vs. Feminist pioneer. Personally i marvel her artistic abilities and her film techniques still used today.

Mother of modern film my ass, this bitch was a nazi bitch its amazing how the white american media shows her as someone amazing lady is just disturbing.
She lived in Germany during the reign of der Third Reich. In America you have Democratic Party and the Republican Party etc.. In Germany at that time you had two parties. The Nazi Party and the farewell party. Get it?
I can't understand a word she says ugh
