  • One of the most underrated movies ever. I'd rate it equal to Chinatown.

  • This movie is a big 10.

  • Altman tops MASH with this , i can understand why people get hacked off because it differs from the novel , ive read it and this remains my favorite movie

  • In this film Marlowe is like the father of the Dude Lebowski: a cocky cool asshole.

  • best marolwe movie ever

  • Reading Marlow novels and imagining him as Elliot Gould all the time!

  • Anyone notice the similarities between this movie and the Coen Brothers' "Big Lebowski" - so many similarities!

  • Two people are complete morons...

  • Cowboy Bebop was probably inspired by this film

  • Really, really don't see Marlowe with curly hair.

  • Dogcrap. Awful. The worst in its genre. A weak, weak imitation of 40's detective movies. The oh-so-uncool-yet-thinks-he's-cool detective mumbles a lot, we waste many minutes of the film viewing his pointless and meaningless existence for no reason like 5-10 minutes wasting time on his stupid cat, but there's almost no crime detecting going on. The case itself doesn't really get going until halfway in, and then it barely stumbles along.

The last minute is aboutthe only interesting thing

  • Doesn't get much better.

  • @Rexicano you nailed it, I totally agree with everything you said. What a horrible film! The worst detective movie ever made.

Ace Ventura Pet Detective was more exciting.

  • @RuflessRecords

    Thanks.

    What was also weird about this film;

Arnold Schwarzenegger in a short part as the muscle.

Looking at him no one cudda guessed that he would go on to be one of the biggest movie stars.

Altman is one of the most over rated Directors but he's no Kurasawa.

  • @strazzy3 bet you didn't see David Carradine (Kill Bill/Kung Fu) as the rambling cellmate? kinda sad they're both uncredited in this film

  • If interested, listen to our podcast on the Long Goodbye:

the link is on my page - see the WEBSITE link on the left hand side of my page.

    Cheers.

  • Mitchum is the best Marlowe

  • why?

  • One the best films I have ever seen.

    Paul

  • Arnold Swarzenegger is in this film, bet none of you'll knew that !!!

  • Not only did Elliot nail Marlowe but even brought out some sides of him I had not gathered from my own reading.

  • Best Chandler Adaptation.

  • Elliot Gould as Marlowe - what were they thinking??

  • @famachris yep, he's awful

  • That's Jim Bouton at 1:05

  • That slap that Hayden takes doesn't look faked.

  • It's time for some new Marlowe films, with someone like Clive Owen in the lead role.

  • I wonder if Owen has the great personality to make this role shine beyond the usual film noir. Owen is great at melting behind a role. And if you look at this version for instance, the great thing about it is Elliot Gould's unique personality.

  • Good point. The key would be to find either a non-leading man type that can still fill the role or a leading man that can be understated.

  • Did he ever feed his cat?

  • At least once.

  • He did buy some cat food but the cat refused to eat it because it wasn't "Curry Brand Cat Food" ..haha

  • I guess I meant if he ever brought "Curry Brand Cat Food" home to the cat. I read elsewhere that the cat ran away.

  • OriginalRocketJock, I must be broken. I read every Marlowe book Chandler wrote, and this twisted rewrite was my favorite film adaptation ever. My first runner up was Mitchum's Farewell, My Lovely, which was the most respectful movie Marlowe. Altman's love for the character as written by Chandler shines through the audacious rethinking of his code. Terry Lennox called Marlowe a loser, and the bullet told Terry he was no longer right.

  • If you like Altman, you'll love this movie.

If you like the Marlowe novels by Chandler, you'll hate this movie.

    Therefore, this movie sucks immensely.

  • Interesting, I've just started reading the book and while this clearly isn't what I was expecting from the film adaptation, it still looks promising and look forward to watching after the book

  • This movie was wild and weird, but ultimately, really well done! It has a good ending and Gould created a great and quirky interpretation of Marlowe.

  • I loved the movie and I loved the book, but don't watch the movie expecting much of anything from the book.

  • the singer is jack sheldon of schoolhouse rock fame (conjunction function and i'm only a bill)

  • The man is smoking a cigarette the entire movie.

  • One of the best film I have ever watched.

  • since when was elliott gould so fucking gorgeous??

    x

  • ain't he, though?

  • Altman and Gould at their finest.

  • Classic "Film Noir" ....only Altman could do it like this ....Elliot Gould does such a great Job as Marlowe bringing his own style to the character....a great film !!!

  • @smizzman "Classic film noir"?! Preposterous.

  • @tabernavudu ..well yeah it's a classic, just because it's not in black and white and not as popular as "Chinatown" or "The Maltese Falcon" doesn't mean it's not a classic, to each his own I guess !!!

  • @smizzman I didn't make myself clear: there is a period considered to be the "classic period" of Noir. For example, such films as "The Long Goodbye", "Farewell My Lovely" and "Chinatown" are considered neo-noirs. "Out of the Past", "The Maltese Falcon" and "Double Indemnity" are classic noirs.

  • @tabernavudu ...Well said ..I recently watched" Out of The Past" again ..WOW is all I gotta say, Bob Mitchum could do no wrong :)

  • Not a fan of Altman but this film (and McCabe...) are the exceptions - great: absurd, entertaining, disturbed and stylish

  • it ain't no chinatown.

  • no, it`s more brilliant and has that black, desperate atmosphere like the classics "Phantom Lady" or "The Big Combo" or ....

  • It is runs a very very very very very very very very very close second. I obviously hold the two motion pictures in very high regard. My children are third.

  • (1)CHINATOWN has been compared to OEDIPUS; the concept of incest ruining a town. (2.) i have LONG GOODBYE movie---a gangster breaks a coke bottle on his girlfriend's nose!!! impossible to break a thick glass bottle on a nose (3.) same gangster takes off his clothes to impress marlow! again, not very real, especially since he thinks marlow owes him almost half-million dollars (4.)has a scene of two dogs in mexican town having sex; who wants to watch that.

  • Great great film and superb music and a fitting memory to Dan Blocker (Hoss of Bonanza)

  • Brilliant! My favorite Altman movie.

  • What a WONDERFUL film!!!

  • The theme of this movie, "The long goodbye", is by John Williams! I love it. The entire film is a masterpiece

  • Yes this is a fantastic film. He's a 50s guy confused by the 1970s. Google 'long goodbye ebert' for a nice review

  • One of my FAVORITE movies!!

  • "Marlboro" ahahahaha.

I have to check this flick out.

  • You should, its a great movie!

  • Gah! I really want to watch this movie, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm going crazy here!

  • Netflix

  • "It's okay with me."

  • The best! Too bad the soundtrack is out of print.

  • a wonderfull movie

    marlowe's world brilliantly revisited

    elliott gould at his best

    sterling hayden's so powerful presence

    magic of nina von pallandt

not to forget an interesting appearance of arnold schwartzenegger as a bodyguard...

  • Well, I don't know about "magic" -- Nina was certainly very pretty, but I wouldn't exactly call her an actress.

Does anyone remember how she became a 15-minute celebrity? Hint: It had something to do with author Clifford Irving and Howard Hughes.

  • yes she was with him in acapulco at the time he said he was with howard hughes

  • "Yeah, I even lost my cat."

  • Quick quiz now -- anybody remember Nina van Pallandt (the beautiful blonde in the Mercedes convertible) and how she got famous?

  • Thank YOU! I just saw this movie and I fell in love with Elliot Gould! It's like updated film noir

  • Great film. Fantastic title music.

  • Robert Altman passed away... this film is his greatest

  • Elliott gould is so awesome

  • Elliott Gould rocks

  • That wig they made Jim Bouton wear was horrendous. Great movie though.

  • Thanks for that. My favourite film of all time.

  • thanks mate!

  • Great Movie. That trailer was choppy and showed too much though. Especially the coke bottle scene.

  • Well at least now we know trailers from the 70s weren't much different from today's trailers...

  • One of Altman's and Gould's best.

  • great!
